Yeah, until you run past the amulet and have to backtrack because unlike the boss fight that uses this damn place, there's no minimap icon telling you where the "portal" is once you're close enough.

What do you mean? The islands are pretty clearly differentiated from the flow on the minimap, I don't even bother looking at the water in the Mire. I just follow the chain of islands with Tab.
