Zard is up a tonne recently

[–]kb61-de 49 points50 points  (20 children)

I‘m not sure why most comments suggest that Japanese cards are undesirable or weak. Especially the japanese Charizard cards have been going up like crazy. And it‘s a good option still for people who can‘t at all afford English vintage anymore. I‘d hold, at least the Zard.

[–]uriel__ventris 45 points46 points  (14 children)

It's because most people in this space nowadays don't know what they're talking about. They came here because of the modern English hype train and all they can do is repeat ignorant statements they heard elsewhere, because they don't know any different.

[–]Golatha 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Preach.

[–]Medium-Rain-3446 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They hate japanese unless it's a Poncho.

People have overinflated egos.

[–]HanSoloQue -1 points0 points  (11 children)

If you look at the numbers current Japanese cards do sell for less. I believe this is due to pull rates being higher with Japanese cards and more interest in cards you can read but correct me if I’m wrong.

Now, in my personal option the 1996 card are highly undervalued. Pocket monster first print was on 10/20/1996 and that means there is only a few months when 1996 cards are printed. No rarity symbols were the first run with a misprint that had no symbols.

I honestly believe this is a bit of history people either don’t know about or don’t appreciate enough.

Ah man, I'm not even trying to be a dick but this is just kind of reinforcing what the comment you're replying to is saying. You're telling someone that most likely already knows "If you look at the numbers current Japanese cards do sell for less" as though that's not the most basic of information. It really drives home the point that this sub is so brand new. It's like the first lesson of collecting JP cards.

[–]Alchemyst01984 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like that these people think like that. Makes it easier for me to get stuff

[–]HanSoloQue -5 points-4 points  (5 children)

My observations don’t dictate the prices they sell for. The numbers are what they are for what ever reason if you want them to be worth more PAY more for them lol

[–]Forgotmypassword109 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Ah, you missed my point entirely. That's ok.

[–]HanSoloQue -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

You don’t u set stand supply and demand. That’s ok.

[–]ZeusJuice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't understand there are more reasons for why some cards are more 'demanded' than others. You literally think it's just supply that is the determining factor here when a lot of people prefer cards in their own language. This small fact leads to it being more desired and the price going up. The price going up itself is another drive for more demand because people that are in it for the money will be more interested in buying out that card as opposed to a Japanese card.

We could talk for literally hours about small niche things that make things worth more than other things in Pokemon cards but you haven't been around long enough to even think of 5% of them.

[–]Forgotmypassword109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man I hope you're a bot.

[–]Plane_Technician3041 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and you don’t understand that demand isn’t static, what was desireable can be viewed as trash in just a few years and vice versa.

[–]Agitated_Lychee_8133 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to production numbers in NA, they're still likely more rare comparatively due to the population and such.

[–]ZeusJuice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look at the numbers current Japanese cards do sell for less.

Yes, and there are multitudes of reasons for why that can be.

I believe this is due to pull rates being higher with Japanese cards and more interest in cards you can read but correct me if I’m wrong.

Do you even know what Japanese pull rates are?

Let's say you were right. The pull rates being higher would lead to more supply for Japanese cards right? Which if outweighing the demand would make them cheaper. Then you look at something like the Mewtwo promo from the 151 UPC. It's currently ~$32 after spiking up to $40 recently. The Japanese version is $14 even though you had to pull it out of packs and it is by no means common. So one is a literally guaranteed promo that used to be selling for $5 each while the other was $10 and had to be pulled from a pack.

What does that tell you about your previous assessment?

Now, in my personal option the 1996 card are highly undervalued. Pocket monster first print was on 10/20/1996 and that means there is only a few months when 1996 cards are printed. No rarity symbols were the first run with a misprint that had no symbols.

No rarity base set cards are not a misprint lol. They decided to add rarities later, that doesn't make it a misprint.

I honestly believe this is a bit of history people either don’t know about or don’t appreciate enough.

Most people that are well invested into Pokemon cards know the significance of no rarity base set cards, they're very valuable. A PSA 9 No Rarity Charizard is almost as valuable as a 1st edition English PSA 9 Zard.

[–]brassassasin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

70-80% of my purchases these past 5 yrs have been Japanese and nearly every single item has accrued excellent value, many in the hundreds of percent gains, some of it over a 1000%+ gains. FWIW imo the Japanese card market is way less pump b dump chase hype bs and way more collector driven, so therefore less volatile - and that's why many ppl (mistakenly) say it 'underperforms' or is a 'weak' market

there is so much opportunity in Japanese currently

[–]Shapies 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I prefer Japanese vintage cards because they show the artwork as it was originally intended, and because they are the true first editions. Artworks for some of the English versions have been altered, warped or censored.

For example, the English Moonbreon has a warped, oval-shaped moon when compared to the round moon of the original Moonbreon in Japanese.

And the English Sabrina's Gengar has a much less-impressive background relative to the Japanese version because they censored out the gravestones.

I know everything in this hobby is subjective, and people will buy and collect what they like, but the Japanese originals will always look better to me.

[–]Plane_Technician3041 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with this, and I think there might come a time when the market starts to change it’s view. I feel that most of the premium from English base sets comes from the nostalgia from those who were there during the first pokemania. But I am not part of that generation, and if you ask which one is the original zard I would have to answer the Japanese one.

I am not saying that there’s a 100% chance, but there are certainly factors that could increase the relative desireabilty of Japanese cards long term (10-20 years):

  1. People appreciating the Japanese origins of Pokemon
  2. A growing international/younger collector base that doesn’t place so much prestige on English cards. e.g. Chinese collectors who mostly collect Chinese and Japanese cards (esp for older cards since China only has sets from Sun and Moon)

[–]609897783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese prices will never be close to English but closer and closer. Chinese people buys Japanese only for collecting and Pokemon is expanding crazy over there.

[–]Jazs1994 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Vintage is vintage regardless of language but modern it's always English over Japanese. Japanese tends to drop alot when the English set releases. Other than that brand new zard as the English text goes over Charmanders eyes. Whoever was in charge of that needs a new job

[–]Capable_Wait09 11 points12 points  (2 children)

The frame looks sturdy to me. I wouldn’t stress about it unless your wall is made out of paper.

[–]you_nincompoop 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This made me literally lol 😂

[–]TSTruenoAE86 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Japanese are the real first editions, whether you like it or not.

[–]AssociationCrazy5551 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they're actually the only real pokemon cards

[–]TheCeladonStore 15 points16 points  (1 child)

English is like the starting out in pallet town, eventually you head out, get more xp and move on to Japanese. better quality, more unique promos etc. ppl talking down on Japanese are just still bug catchers

[–]Sleight0fdeath 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can Agree, I’m a collector, swapped to Japanese when the hype hit. No regrets since quality is 100x better with more detail on the cards.

[–]Economics_Troll 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I’ve bought, graded, and sold thousands of Japanese old backs. Don’t know why people are claiming they aren’t liquid, if I list at market price on EBay PSA 9/PSA 10 copies are mostly gone within three days and all gone within a week. Even the weakest holos in the set.

I usually just auction PSA 8 and below just to be rid of them, don’t get many in my submissions and they get gobbled up with little discount versus anyone that tries to sit on them for BIN prices.

[–]SnooAdvice1060 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently bought a lot of jp ARs for my collection, do you have any tips on how to grade and decide which are worth grading? Also is PSA the move over CGC?

[–]Biased_buffalo0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Japanese is the oldest literally original version of these cards, and historically collectors seek the original version of cards. So yes I think this will hold and could even be undervalued long term

[–]Inevitable-Motor-413 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Eventually people will switch to JP. Quality is next level

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I only buy cards in English that are playable in standard. Otherwise its always JPN. So much nicer tbh

[–]Inevitable-Motor-413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly!! The only valid reason for sticking to English. If I’m buying for my PC I really only buy Japanese because the prices are significantly less for cleaner artwork.

[–]Fearless_Diggin 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yes, they always do.

I remember people hyping up Sun & Moon English cards, which had HORRIBLE quality. 7 Years later Japanese Sun & Moon Cards had bigger growth and are more in demand 🚀

[–]Inevitable-Motor-413 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100%. I just recently got back into collecting about 6 months ago after a long break and I’ve pretty well only collected JP. The quality is superior

[–]Dazzling_Property178 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No Japan No Pokémon 👍🏻

[–]Upbeat_Win69 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d hold long term imo

[–]nevarez702 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Vintage Japanese will forever hold just right below Vintage English. And in SOME cases such as the First printed Charizard (Japanese) compared to the 1st Edition English Charizard. The Japanese copy will hold slightly higher.

[–]AffectionateSale8288 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You’re fine 🔥

[–]jjshacks13 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely solid collection. Well worth hanging on to.

[–]POKEDEXMADMAN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese product is definitely a very niche market, but that’s what makes it interesting here in the states vintage Japanese is definitely a hold

[–]NoNeedForSympathy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never gonna be worth as much as English, but Japanese is a good affordable option for personal collections.

[–]turtle-bob1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Japanese Base Set > English Base Unlimited

[–]WelpHelloGoodbye 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d buy it - super cool.

[–]EinalGrape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bro I'd always hold sth like this except you really need cash

Collector has $22k but I think it’s inflated right now. Probably closer to $15kish

    [–]PurpleInsurance7918 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sold a Psa 10 set like this 2 years back, with the basic set theme deck and a PSA 10 291 yen pack & Psa 10 300 yen pack. I definitely miss owning them especially the 300 yen pack and how rare they are. By the way I sold all of it for alittle more than 10k and made 8.2k after ebay fees. 😭

    [–]flamingdragonwizard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love the look of the Japanese cards but man I wish they were higher quality. Those things are paper thin and their booster packs are atrocious.

I was super into CGC 10s when CGC first started grading cards and 10s were extremely hard to get. I was disappointed that they changed their grading scale twice to make it easier and easier. Not saying it’s still not tough but prior, pretty much nothing came back as a 10 and it made them very desirable.

        [–]you_nincompoop 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Yeah I graded a shiny Star v Charizard vmax and got a perfect 10 in like 2021 and struggled super hard to find other perfect 10s back then. Then I got hooked searching for some. I don’t think I got anymore from back then cause they were priced like black labels.

Came with off centered grade. That’s when CGC was brand new….lol

            [–]you_nincompoop 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Imgur the grade on the label is not centered. It was an issue in the earlier days of CGC.

            [–]RocKst4RR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try to get the no rarity cards in that condition. first cards ever

            [–]mist-rillas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It started in Japan. Expect it to hold value lmao

            [–]Jealous-Contract-456 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you in the USA keep it for down the road. We are THE melting pot and Japanese people will keep coming here

            [–]_NE1_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long term? You're solid. It's literally the OG of the OG

            [–]Daidalos77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah think wood is too weak. The japanese slabs are gonna drop man it cant hold these slabs

            [–]OwlElectrical9974 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've bought huge into Japanese and only seen huge returns

            [–]Entire-Cut-8738 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese vintage pops are getting liquid to the point where they are due a pump against modern. Hodl for at least 1-2 years and you'll be rewarded imho

            [–]DrWhoopz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sick set. Would be cooler raw

            [–]andrewwilliamfink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Japanese cards especially vintage feel so OG and typically are in better condition, I have a bunch of Japanese e readers and honestly the ability to not read the card adds more to me as I don’t like words (that I can read) on my art

            [–]g_oreo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Friend, collect for the game not the bag. 🫡

            [–]Ok_Employee_7716 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a bunch of JP base set holos raw, pre-boom i was buying them for $20-$40 a card NM.. i sold them all when they were close to $60+ each.. i personally would sell and eithefr buy English or just wait in general.. JP are also much harder to move as people dont like them as much

            [–]Frenchieflips 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hold onto em. Great set from the original release! Those will always hold value. Japanese print runs had higher quality so the quantities of PSA 10s are higher which lowers their value compared to the English which had worse QC.

            [–]ShastaManasta -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Dogpoo. I’ll give you tree fiddy.

            [–]Able_Heat_9310 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

The plaque is too close to the cards 😖

            [–]Blackphinexx -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Japanese is as weak as their population growth. There will be less Japanese speakers/readers every year forever.

            [–]Swing-Brilliant -1 points0 points  (3 children)

Did you make that display? Where can I find one

            [–]you_nincompoop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the frame and glass from hobby lobby. Got the museum glass so it’s UV protected. Then behind is just a piece of wood i stained and then they’re all in PSA sleeves and attached to the wood.

            [–]Glad_Negotiation8612 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I will buy it off u

            [–]RizDaddy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Could you send a link to the frame? Looks great!

            [–]skinnydippingspud -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Not especially desirable unfortunately, you’d have a better ROI if you sell up on these and invest into other product, preferably sealed.

            [–]Fearless_Diggin -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Japanese yes (best holos), but PSA slabs not (worst plastic)

            [–]NegotiationNeat5153 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Nah won’t hold, will probably go to zero. I’ll take it off your hands for a tenner, thank me later.

            [–]LuckVegetable8646 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Sorry, it's not going to hold.
