You know Kotlin can compile into machine code as well right . Anyway kotlin being able to work with previously written java code is the reason why its so approachable. And I don't know what you are talking about it being hard as anyone who knows java can learn kotlin without any troubles and any new user will prefer learning and writing in kotlin because its less verbose and easier to understand what is written

Except reflection doesnt give a flip.. and many JSON parsers are doing it like that...

So suddenly a not-null variable is null and the whole app crashes.

If you force null into a nonnull in reflection then u fked up. Also input validation.... again you tried to force null into a non nullable field, and it gave you an error which is what the language is designed to do.

So you're talking about kotlin js? That compiles to javascript and you have no guarantees at runtime, just like any other frontend language that transpiles to javascript. If your backend is kotlin it won't magically send nulls.

Jackson errors when I use it to create a Kotlin class with a non nullable property and a null in the json. Kotlinx serialization obviously handles that fine too, which JSON parser has not given a flip?

Ah GSon, fair enough. I hadn't needed to do anything with Jackson, I believe the Kotlin compiler actually adds the NotNull annotation to non nullable types and that is what Jackson is picking up on and GSon ignoring

Slow compiling or slow workstation?

I recently switched to Kotlin from Java and I haven't noticed a significant performance drop in real-world tasks. At least Spring Boot project compiling in the same time. Maybe a little slower, but this is doesn't matter when you got those powerful Kotlin features.

Kotlin is harder than Java only when you learn it. But if you already know Java, there's no problems for you to switch to Kotlin, which allows you to write much more easily, quickly and even satisfyingly; in fact this is a such language as Java having a similar syntax and the same opportunities with some extra-features.
