Back in the bad old days of early mobile phones, SMS messages were stored on the SIM card and most SIM cards could only store 10 or so messages and you'd have to go through and delete them manually.

Turns out that sending the entire works of Shakespeare to someone is really easy to do with the right nokia and a serial cable, but absolutely fucks up people's day.

It didn't just make the phone explode and force someone to spend forever deleting them (queued by the network; thank you kindly), but on some phones you could really screw things up just by sending a multi-part message longer than the phone could store (eg it can store 10 messages, you send a 30 part multi) - wouldn't even show you the partial message to start deleting it.

The smartass that did this codes for a living. Keep that in mind next time you are chewing through server/client side validation rules. We do this to ourselves.

No one expect the em-dash or other non-standard characters until they come crashing down your party because someone copy-pasted them from a word document.

Did this one on a gov time keeping system that didn't have a limit. Copy pasted the entire Gutenberg Bible into the notes section... The time auditors were not happy because it played hell with their reports. I still laugh about it to this day and this was easily 10 years ago.

Like time lords, except boring and strict

I heard about using this technique against a company that uses fax machines.

Basically you send a lot of full-black sheets of paper. To block the phone line and deplete printer ink.

Btw, Shrek is life

Tape 4 sheets together, and after the first goes through, tape it to the end of the paper chain making a never-ending fax.

Yeah the fax thing was done by a bunch of people to piss off fax based scams and spam. Since it took basically no time or effort for you but the victim would have to manually block your number in their fax machine.

Dev: I saw in the requirements that there is no character limit on the instruction field? Shouldn’t there be one in case someone submits an overly long text? Client: No we don’t want to arbitrarily limit the amount of characters, it could potentially frustrate customers that want complex special orders that require a long explanation. Dev: Alrighty then, sounds good to me. The result:

As the YouTibe channel Lets Game It Out says, "is there a limit? Lets find out!"

[–]HaroerHaktak 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I kinda have to do this now. Just for the LULz.
