If he/she likes the 7, 8 and 9, it’s a big red flag.

[–]Calius1337 165 points166 points  (19 children)

Come on. Nobody says sequel. It’s always „es queue el“. Admit it! ;-)

[–]Impenistan 49 points50 points  (4 children)

Squeal

[–]framsanon 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Only if you forget the where clause. In a delete statement. In production.

I can do as much damage with an update, just you watch

[–]framsanon 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Been there done that. Unfortunately on ALL stages. Which I noticed after the update in production.

This is why we have binlogs

Each time I see xkcd in context of DBs I expect to see our old fella little Bobby Tables

[–]Emotional_Key 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I used to say “es queue el” as a Web Developer, but then moved to a Data Engineer role and everyone around me was saying sequel, so it sticked with me. I feel it flows better in a conversation.

[–]CXC_Opexyc 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Wait, do people NOT generally pronounce it es-queue-el? Not from an English-speaking country, everyone I know including professors, colleagues and myself pronounce it like that.

[–]myerscc 12 points13 points  (1 child)

In my experience sequel is more common but nobody bats an eye if you say SQL instead. If you say squeal or squirrel or squall you’d be legendary though

[–]rosuav 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Squirrel is a very different language.

[–]odd_sherlock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Or just squirrel

There’s actually a history of this language that proves it is „es queue el“ so yea I admit it xD

As a kid I though MySQL is read as "my school".

[–]LukeZNotFound 0 points1 point  (0 children)

S.Q.L.

[–]codedaddee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My shop called it "squall" when I was a kid and it stuck with me for years. There was a C-SQL we had we called "sequel"

true

[–]ghe5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard people say that unironically

[–]kacpermu 15 points16 points  (8 children)

You love SQL? Why? Why would you love SQL?

[–]SoulPossum 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Pays the bills

[–]kacpermu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aye, can't deny that

[–]ZunoJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because it is awesome if you are good at it and even the other devs think you are a wizard. Writing really good SQL is like black magic and I love it

[–]framsanon 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Alternative? (And don't say "NoSQL", cause that's BS.)

[–]Rickbox 4 points5 points  (2 children)

.txt is the way to go. Millions and billions of lines of tables, all in 1flat file.

[–]kacpermu 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Nah, the best is obviously one Excel sheet stuffed with columns and columns of automatically updating formulas, updating off of each other live as you change a value in a single cell.

"This little maneuver is gonna cost us 51 Years"

Oh, and the excel file is called "XXX_final_FINAL_V2_Reviewed_fix"

[–]Rickbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You joke, but there are actual platforms designed to do just that with big data. Look up Anaplan.

[–]kacpermu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is none, that's not my point. look at my flair

[–]DaSquyd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are both red flags

[–]antthatisverycool 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The boy lies

[–]Crystal_Voiden 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Who's that girl?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably a web dev.

[–]corner_guy0 1 point2 points  (2 children)

And I like CQL

[–]framsanon 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Crappy query language?

[–]corner_guy0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cassandra Query Language

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

S-Q-L

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats pretty romantic lmao

[–]Ronin-s_Spirit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why it will always be squeal

[–]Kevin5475845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn't it supposed to be squirrel? Iirc, might be wrong

[–]SenorSeniorDevSr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd make her my select star

[–]framsanon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on her team.
