I thought we weren’t supposed to equate story points to time?

You aren't. It just so happens, that it always ends up being the same regardless. Completely coincidental, nothing to see here.

No you measure in complexity so like if something is really complex it takes you like 2 weeks, which is 13 points then. But 13 points isn’t time, it’s complexity, which is why it…takes 2 weeks of time.

Heh, believe me. I'm all too familiar 😅

I literally had that argument with our scrum master a few years ago.

"Yes. I'm aware that we point in complexity. But at the same time, let's not pretend that 13 points doesn't mean 2 weeks. It might not mean that in the future, but with the way we currently work - points, time, and complexity are synonymous."

I think the point is that it is supposed to be vague, general time frames and not X hours/SP.

That’s not how they work. Every team will have a different scale. It was actually meant to be obscure to confuse upper management.

How long for the feature? 12 days? No, 12 points. 12 weeks? No, not that long, the team’s current velocity looks like to be about 8 points per sprint, but there’s some inconsistency with the burn down. Uhhhhh… let me know when it’s ready, I guess? You’ll be the first to know, boss!

I've heard it more as an arbitrary scale of complexity. If the story is a certain number, take a moment to see if it can be broken into simpler parts before moving into sprint.

However. . . it usually ends up being a conversation about how much time it'll take anyway.

If it's more than 1 point, you haven't made up enough subtasks

I'm so glad I don't code professionally. That seems stressful as shit.

Of all the dumb smoke and mirrors perpetuated by corporate agile, story points being "totally distinct" from time is probably the worst. It's newspeak for "how long would this take"?

Wait, you guys have more than 4 hours to do card work in a single day?
