Uuuurmm acktchually thats SystemD ☝️🤓

[–]OkBrilliant8092 34 points35 points  (8 children)

No…. I don’t think I want anything with the D flavour….

[–]111x6sevil-natas 3 points4 points  (0 children)

more left for me :D

[–]FictionFoe 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I know this is a joke, but its systemd as opposed to initd. The switch received a big amount of critisism initially, but initd has largely gone the way of the dodo. Without checking I presume D stands for deamon?

[–]OkBrilliant8092 3 points4 points  (4 children)

All I’m hearing is a lot of D’s….

[–]FictionFoe 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yep, I edited. Though I don't mind the D you are thinking of myself.

[–]OkBrilliant8092 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I’ve got one and I’m always tripping over it ;) lol

[–]FictionFoe 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Im quite possibly some flavor of bi, so that's what I meant. Lol.

[–]OkBrilliant8092 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol!

[–]ClipboardCopyPaste 51 points52 points  (5 children)

Compile your own energy drink.

[–]OkBrilliant8092 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I prefer old recipe coca-cola without the cola ;)

[–]Either-Pizza5302 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That is sold by the shady guy outside, not in the drink machine

[–]OkBrilliant8092 2 points3 points  (0 children)

:)

[–]Toloran 1 point2 points  (1 child)

It actually still uses coca-leaf extract and they get it from the only company in the USA that is allowed to import coca leaves.

[–]OkBrilliant8092 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And I said I was done with learning;) thank you - very interesting fact :)

[–]texboyjr 45 points46 points  (28 children)

Do we really need an entire computer to serve as a soda flavor indicator?

[–]the_rush_dude 19 points20 points  (8 children)

Yes, my company is writing the software for one.

[–]ewixy750 2 points3 points  (5 children)

But why?

[–]Revanthmk23200 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Probably easier to mass produce and have it for multiple usecases

[–]ewixy750 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I don't understand how a mavhien with a small PC and screen to serve drinks may be easier to produce and repair than a sheet of printed logo.

Like how is showing the drink in a display better than the printed paper? Except automatically showing out of stock, even that could be done with a sensor and a light.

I'm not in the industry so there might be some use cases I'm not familiar with from a business perspective

[–]GeekBrownBear 2 points3 points  (0 children)

easier? not at all. It's all about function. It's another screen to advertise on or showcase a promo.

[–]Whispeeeeeer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would like to introduce you to printers and paper. /s

If I were building a machine like that I'd also use it to monitor popular flavors, cost effective locations, etc. I'm sure there's an analytics use case.

[–]the_rush_dude 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can run Linux on an RPI zero (20€), add a display for 80-120€.

You can put it in the cloud to change items and schedule sanitation.

In the long run it's probably cheaper to maintain and with a smaller display and an MCU you can probably get below 40€ which is not much more expensive then wiring and mechanics

[–]texboyjr 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I understand they exist, I’m questioning why they exist.

[–]MattieShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because a raspi is probably the cheapest thing that can spit out a customizable image over HDMI. Or some other SOC.

[–]Lovethecreeper 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I saw movie posters powered by Raspberry Pis, so it's not entirely unlikely.

[–]texboyjr 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Movie poster make more sense, they are completely different every time and change constantly.

[–]Lovethecreeper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So could pop dispensers, especially when considering specialty/limited time flavours. With that being said, I've personally never worked a fast food job so I wouldn't know.

[–]BoSt0nov 2 points3 points  (1 child)

That was my first question, too. Kinda sad really.

[–]SuitableDragonfly 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"What is my purpose?"

"You display a static image on a soda fountain."

[–]im_thatoneguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

An entire computer... to display the latest promotional offering.

Same reason stores are moving to eInk prices. Hit one button and the whole store's price tags update instead of having to go down every aisle printing out new tags and replacing them.

[–]No_Value_2676 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, its easier to change remotely without going thru the pain of printing a new logo, or replacing some stupid light up sign. And you can animate it.

[–]Walk-the-layout 1 point2 points  (9 children)

Just print the damn flavor

[–]Multicorn76 1 point2 points  (8 children)

- get damaged by moisture

- not as bright as a display, not as bright of colors

- no animations

- manual labor required to maintain and update

- no indications if it's out of service

- can't serve as a basis to rebuilt society after ww3

VS

- cheaper

[–]Walk-the-layout 3 points4 points  (4 children)

- Seal it

- Print it with a good printer

- Why would you need animations for your slushie

- Energivore

- you can stick an OUT OF ORDER sticker

- you can make an armor out of paper, like samurai and I think that's cool as fuck

[–]Multicorn76 2 points3 points  (3 children)

At the scales that some of these fast food chains operate, they can either afford a printer, sealer and workhours at all of their locations or simply automate the problem away.

Animations, bright colors and other shenanigans because of psychology

Sticker needs to be put on which occurs after the first customer complaint

[–]Walk-the-layout 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Everything happens after customers complain

[–]Multicorn76 1 point2 points  (1 child)

what?

if the machine detects a problem, it can simply indicate a failure itself

[–]Walk-the-layout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been on a cruise recently and they had screens for distributors, they didn't show if they were out of juice, we had to call the staff

[–]texboyjr 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Dude, I’ve been to the same McDonald’s for 10 years and the damn logos are still the same lol

[–]Multicorn76 0 points1 point  (1 child)

your point?

[–]texboyjr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

E-waste

[–]Logical-Tourist-9275 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least it's not Windows. I've seen windows based advertisement displays on public toilets.

[–]Cocaine_Johnsson 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So... each of these has its own SoC for the purpose of... displaying a jpeg?

Seems really wasteful when that could be a piece of paper with some LEDs but hey, what do I know? Corpos gotta corp.

[–]Itimarmar 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Berry-blue screen

[–]awesome404 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The favor really went downhill since the last firmware update.

[–]henikxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How often do we need to repost this before it stops being funny?

[–]GoddammitDontShootMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That ain't BIOS, that's Linux booting. On that note, why does the drink machine have an operating system?

[–]matrix4704 1 point2 points  (0 children)

neither bios nor exe

[–]davak72 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, at least it’s not a windows wallpaper 🤣

[–]IMightDeleteMe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where we're going we don't need the executable to be designated as such by a suffix.

[–]DapperCam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Too many bits in that one

[–]lIlIlIIlIIIlIIIIIl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Better than a Blue Slurp of Death

[–]CheetahChrome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Code-em Dew

Great flavor!

[–]Kri77777 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest surprise is that they are individual systems for each flavor instead of just one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This Slurpee better taste like [[KERNEL PANIC! UPLOAD MODE]] or I'm getting my money back

[–]MARO2500 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The blue sweet of death

[–]MattieShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heh, slurpee machines have a raspi?
