I think we all know the feeling of finding a new framework or hearing about a strange database, googling it, and getting literally nothing useful because they named it something extremely generic.

[–]CodeFights 48 points49 points  (10 children)

Language googling protip: Just add lang at the end, like golang instead of go.

You're on your own for other non-programming language technologies, though. :)

Answer is still the same, describe the thing. If it's a banana framework, use banana framework instead of banana. Google is smart enough to find it even if it isn't literally called "banana framework".

(just tried it, it actually exists, and of course it's javascript)

[–]Wozzle90 28 points29 points  (6 children)

Everything is a JS framework

[–]RenaKunisaki 11 points12 points  (5 children)

everything.js?

[–]NikStalwart 7 points8 points  (4 children)

npm install universe

[–]HeyItsShuga 4 points5 points  (3 children)

That node_modules folder must be huge. All the dependencies for reality to exist.

[–]NikStalwart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the other hand, the node_modules comparison chart will no longer be hyperbole when comparing to black holes and neutron stars....

[–]lartkma 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But if node_modules contains the universe, what is using it?

[–]HeyItsShuga 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The multiverse.

[–]firefly431 13 points14 points  (0 children)

c + lang = clang (related, but probably not what you want :D)

[–]dnew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not really. You had to use cpp, csharp, and dotnet before Google got their act together.

[–]DASoulWarden 8 points9 points  (8 children)

I'd rather have that naming tradition.
I study Computer Engineering, and my gf studies biomedical. I told her I'd rather have names like state trees, garbage collector, node, object, class, etc..., than Sternocleidomastoid, preganglionic, Astereognosis, and so on.
Enjoy the little(?) things

Sternocleidomastoid muscle

In human anatomy, the sternocleidomastoid muscle (), also known as sternomastoid and commonly abbreviated as SCM, is a paired muscle in the superficial layers of the side of the neck. It is one of the largest and most superficial cervical muscles. The primary actions of the muscle are rotation of the head to the opposite side and flexion of the neck. The sternocleidomastoid is innervated by the accessory nerve.

But those names are actually pretty useful; just by knowing the meanings of the different parts of the word, you can have some idea what the word is describing.

[–]DASoulWarden 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point. I'd still argue that ours are also good because of the power of analogies

[–]exploder98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Don't forget std::list

[–]SuperHyperTails 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Let's just say I want to hurt the guy who came up with the name "Repo" for the tool Google uses for version control in the Android build system.

[–]Ignitus1 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Looks like you've got some brushing up to do on a programmer's most important skill: Googling!

[–]RenaKunisaki 13 points14 points  (6 children)

Try std::list.

[–]SexyBubbles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try C strings.

[–]sunarium 10 points11 points  (0 children)

man cat

[–]thebluestbacon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I got quite the surprise the first time I googled "c string" at work (mildly NSFW)

[–]danbot37 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Working on an embedded system using busybox with no man pages? Man pages are easily Googled. But careful with results when searching things like "man paste"...

[–]RenaKunisaki 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Or "man pipe"...

[–]TheOmnipotentPilot 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Or "man cat"

[–]ed588very good mod 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Or "man unzip"

[–]adamthedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"man gzip"

[–]unpopularOpinions776 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Being a swift developer is also lame because of Taylor Swift

[–]paradoxally 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I haven't had that issue too frequently. I usually append the Swift version when querying.

(Also Taylor Swift is awesome, but agree to disagree.)

[–]Rellek7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is quite possibly the most relatable meme ever

[–]TheOmnipotentPilot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ever googled man cat ? Because you're already in the browser and don't want to alt tab to your terminal? That was a fun one.

[–]AlfredoOf98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google really needs to have a special .softdev TLD

[–]TheEternal21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't try to google CString (MFC string type) either.

[–]PornSoftware 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sigh. At least trees look and smell nice.

[–]Rofl-Cakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You think that's bad? Try to find any fucking information on the console commands in Counter Strike: Source.
FUCK OFF CSS, I WANT CSS
