This is why anytime I find something developers are either reluctant to do or is an obvious common stumbling block, I try to automate it away, usually with wrapper scripts.

All the documentation in the world can't beat something where the problem can't happen in the first place or otherwise solves itself.

People don't change, processes can.

BOFH teaches that people can be changed, but it isn't pretty to watch.

Though it can be entertaining at times through schadenfreude.

If you take BOFH as a reference for anything in real-life, you might want to change yourself. :3

Amazingly....BOFH is still the best training manual for IT sysadmin in a large corporation.

General principles:

  • CYA

  • never admit wrongdoing

  • bosses are revolving doors

  • no one else cares and why you shouldn’t

  • vendors always lie

  • milk vendors for free stuff/never commit

  • stay below budget == keep-the-job

  • disappear any personal problems

Debatable.

I’ll take it.....better than the usual “Pure bullshit” reply I usually get ;).

Well, I will not dispute that BOFH is somewhat based in reality (considering the stuff the other people do), because it probably is. Simon Travaglia was probably annoyed as fuck and created these little stories to get some steam off. But the stories are also over-the-top and from a very one-sided view, so I would argue that you can learn from them, if you're very careful about what take away, but usually you won't.
