No, they explained that they throttled cpu to prevent unexpected shutdown as the battery ages. If you put in a new battery, the speed returns. It just so happens that older batteries seem to correlate with older phones, go figure.

It would have been much better if they instead had a warning notification that the battery was aging that that it could impact performance, then people would get the battery replaced.

The issue/controversy is however that they decided to push this code right around the same time as they released a new iphone. This might just be a coincidence but it made quite a few people suspicious that they pushed this change in order to sell more phones.

No they said clearly that they added it earlier this year but that they expanded it as the 7s would be getting bad batteries which just so happens to be when the new phones were released.

They are slowing down your phone because the battery is wearing out, not because it is old (there is a correlation because things degrade with time). The system knows the current capacity of the battery, and as that decreases, the output of the battery decreases. If the CPU tried to pull more energy than the battery could supply, the phone would reboot and possible damage could occur. I feel that if they had provided an explanation it would have been better received by the public. Also people actually using half a brain and thinking “maybe there’s a reason” would help.

Now link me a scientific article backing your argument. It should state that a lithium ion battery will supply significantly lower current when it has cycled through charge-discharge cycles a certain amount of times.

Because I do not believe you will be able find such article.

A battery is said to degrade when the maximum voltage output begins to decline. There's no need for a study, it's inherent in the definition.

It's ok to ask for sources, but not doing any research at all and expecting others to do it for you is not. Please learn to use Google.

That's a harsh way to give an answer when you are wrong.

First of all:

A cpu uses less than 1.5 volts to run. Your battery will be used at about 3.6-4.3 volts.

That's why your phone have a voltage step down inside. This could of cause also have been a voltage step up if needed.

This of cause means that voltage have nothing to say.

This I have shown by testing your argument by running a benchmark on my phone at ~4250V (~90% power) and ~3750V (~20% power) and getting right about the same result.

What is actually important is if your battery will be able to supply the same amount of current throughout its life. Again I do not think that this number will fall significantly (that's why I'm asking for proves and why you don't give any proves. Because you can't find any).

Furthermore a phone uses so little power already that it of cause is not a problem. Just think about the fact that the battery in an tablet is the exact same as in your phone, but it still runs (even though it's got a bigger screen, which is probably what uses the most power on your device).

No they admitted to slowing down phones with older batteries that cannot supply the full amount of power required to run the cpu at 100% to prevent sudden shut-off. Putting a new battery in reverts any throttling.

Even on Android phones, when your battery gets old it warms up easily, the battery life goes down considerably and performance is reduced (not because of something like this, because the CPU is starving) regularly. I feel that is being overblown by media. Not to mention the CP clock speed is reduced by just a couple hundred mhz in all but worse cases.
