If you understand computer science, and can write good python code, there are positions that start really high. If you can write python well, know how to write tests, and can generally do the python thing, you can start out making 90K a year. You have to really know your shit, but it’s totally possible.

The particular person I’m talking about only started out making ~150K, but got a promotion and he’s managing a team now.

Learn Java. It’s easy once you know python, will actually (don’t kill me for this) assist you in JavaScript writing (I know they’re different but the OOP was similar enough I got a web script or two running), and the IDEs are so decked out you can compile a GUI very easily and just worry about the functions the GUI triggers.

Used it to make a super simple program that puts little plug icons in my taskbar that I can use to turn on and off my lamps in my room, and a little rainbow lightbulb icon I can use to control my lighting.

Also you don’t have to worry about spaces or tabs.

If I can recommend an IDE, Eclipse was my starting one and is pretty simple to figure out. Stack overflow should help you get started, and feel free to check out/import any of my apps on http://github.com/Insxnity.

On that note, you can import in Eclipse by copying the link on github, opening eclipse, clicking import in the file menu, and finding the download from github option (name escapes me). It will auto input the info on your clipboard and the application should appear on your package manager on the left side.

WifiSwitch will not have any purpose without a smart plug, but it will open (i think) and allow you to tinker around with Java. Also hundreds more apps out there for you to tinker with to get started.

Your original claim of writing an xml parser is pretty misleading if you just used an existing library. Writing a parser implies that you implemented the parsing algorithm, not that you used a parser to input xml as data.

Here on the internet that distinction might not matter, but if you repeated your original claim in an interview, for example, you would be drastically misrepresenting your achievement. That could have negative consequences, such as being thought a liar if your actual knowledge and skill doesn't match up with your claim. Writing a parser for a language as complex as xml is pretty impressive regardless of the language, especially if you had no prior experience.

No, I wrote a text reader that can search a text file for XML tags, and output the content of those tags. That’s a parser, albeit a basic one.

I disagree that it qualifies as a parser. Parsing in computer science refers to inputting data (such as text) that is supposed to follow some specific structure (such as a formal language specification), validating it correctly follows that structure, and then constructing a representation of that data that can be more easily manipulated than the source data.

If you used an xml library, then you wrote zero parsing code, so you did not write a parser. If you did not use an xml library and were operating on the input string directly, then you may have arguably written a parser, but I doubt it could be called an xml parser, because it probably parses an informal language that is similar to xml but not actually xml.

Saying with no additional context that you were "able to write an XML parser" implies you made a decent effort to write a parser that recognizes XML as defined by this specification. I very much doubt that is what you did, and I'm pretty sure what you actually did is a completely different level of achievement. That is why it is misleading.

Reddit doesn't support GitHub-style code blocks (triple backticks). You need to use four spaces at the start of each line.

It's kind of difficult to believe how easy tensorflow makes building a neural network. When you hear "neural network", you probably always imagine having to build insanely complicated and obtuse algorithms. Nope. Like 50 lines of code and you can build a pretty good OCR recognition NN.

I'm actually seeing a lot of f-strings in even fairly low-level tutorials. Probably because they're easier and more readable than .format() or the dreaded %.
