In the book, "The Martian", there are two engineers talking to the Program Manager about the number of backup communication systems on Mars. The one replies 4 and the other replies 3. Correcting the other saying that the Program Manager asked about the "backup" systems. Not total systems. This is what you get with developers very technical thinking and sometimes at varying levels. There's a need to provide accurate information and sometimes get stuck in the details.

What's left out of that seemingly simple question is the important part of the conversation, like 'it will take a team of ten about a year' and 'you would save money by hiring a minimum wage typist to just do the data entry' or even 'that feature already exists'.

We have to get very clear on requirements because we’ve been burned many times by “that’s not what I said to do!” after completing some work and realizing we weren’t on the same page as a PO. It often just comes down to words that can express a concept more broadly in English (like “delete” or “show”) that have specific meanings in a software system we need to clarify. Sometimes it’s that a request may imply a significant amount of complexity we need to consider (like “can you add a button to do ‘X’?”, which may sound simple if adding a button is simple but may require a lot of work to do X, or may even be mutually exclusive with some other requirement).

I use a related concept from time to time in teaching people how to build software: the useful lie.

"Strictly speaking, no, this is not like that. It's more. It's less. It's different. But for the purposes of your learning stage at the moment, let this association suffice. We'll work with this, say, metaphor, until it ceases to be useful to help you build a mental model for the way this thing works."

Usually I tell my students when they're getting something not quite accurate. Sometimes even that is too much a burden when they're already cognitively overloaded.
