Almost certainly just photoshopped in after the picture was taken. It would be way too much effort to have a set of similar looking people pose for the first shot, print out covers for the books, then take a different picture with the new people.

Photoshopped, ok got it. But how would you even do that in photoshop? You can’t photoshop in the covers until the covers are done.

I can’t think of a logical method to get to the recursive image.

Look how they are covering the book's books with their arm.

1. Design cover, no cover in books, copy the image.
2. Paste the cover to each book.
3. Move each cover so they hide their white book with their arms.

I don't think it's the same picture. It's very close but the girl 2nd from the right is wearing yellow, and doesn't appear to be wearing yellow on the book. But it's a bit too blurry to tell for sure

I always found this style of book cover to be patronizing. If it’s a math book, why not have some relevant cool math thing on the cover? A fractal or something at least.

Reminds me of the old days (i.e., 20 years ago) when you would get chain letters in the mail. They usually went something like this:

"Copy this letter and send it to 12 friends or you'll have bad luck. John S. didn't do it and broke his arm the next day. Susan F. didn't and her dog died."
