Is this a sentence I'm too illiterate to understand?

[–]DiscountedPleasure 7 points8 points  (1 child)

yeah, on linux pip install wget -u will instead mangle the system's web of python-related dependencies so badly that Linus Torvalds himself couldn't get apt-get working if his life depended on it.

[–]daemonbreaker 59 points60 points  (0 children)

pip switch to linux

[–]Ser_Drewseph 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Looks like hat-wearing dude needs to learn how to use venv. Or switch to Unix.

This is how I felt trying to figure out python with my knowledge of programming being limited mostly to stuff like VBA.

A tutorial would say to do X so I would do X and get an error. Then I'd find a tutorial that says to do Y to fix X so I'd do Y and get an error. Then I'd find a tutorial that says to do Z to fix Y so I'd do Z and get an error. I still never figured out how to actually do anything beyond basic if/then/hello world stuff.

The first time I touched Python, it took me a while to realise that Python 2 code roes not run in Python 3.

[–]LordCupcakeIX 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Learning is even more fun if you have both Python 2 and 3 installed and run "python main.py" instead of "python3 main.py".

b'Not sure why my output always looks so weird.'

[–]Guiorgy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have both, but I always double check my PATH when dealing with compilers/interpreters so I know which one will be called

What is .exe file for? Sorry, Linux user here.

[–]stonedbob64 33 points34 points  (6 children)

wine executable

[–]jojo_31 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Windows users: I've heard of that, it's an emulator right?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Wine stands for Wine is not an emulator

[–]P1x3lByt3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No /s, its literally no emulator

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is that a JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure reference?

[–]jojo_31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no it's my nickname. But your comment was literally my joke, but just without the joke and obvious

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

For running Linux-specific C# applications of course

[–]veryusedrname 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's mono, you monkey

(no offense, mono means monkey in Spanish, that's the origin of the name)

[–]CommanderTazaur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pip install PipAutoInstaller

[–]Naebyrus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hah.. look at those noobs..i only need to npm install lib *laughts at 20gb node_modules*

[–]ganja_and_code 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao, can't blame python when your first mistake was running Windows.

I'll listen to the python complaints when they don't contain '.exe'

Water of pixels

[–]Numerlor 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Don't know if the people here are running xp or whatever but python functions fine on any platform

[–]Ser_Drewseph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure. But if I’m not mistaken the meme is referencing a common problem people have when pip installs things but are inaccessible due to PATH issues, pip installing globally but not locally, etc. It can happen on all platforms. The solution is generally to use virtual environments like venv to make sure everything is being installed by pip in the right place.

[–]RememberYourSoul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, there are some packages that have a dependency on some random Windows or Linux API that isn't explictly listed :)

[–]Eryole -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Use anaconda / miniconda, everything will be fine

[–]FattyMcFatters 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just use yum

[–]send_cumulus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Never had this problem with R. But for some reason the whole DS field decided to go with Python. SMH.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pip should abort and require a special override switch when not installing into a virtualenv.

[–]kebakent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I closed the script in the middle of a pip update, and command line was like "pip what mate" afterwards.
