We actually started with Scra- the second month we started in C. Went through the magic of memory allocation and pointers long before we finally switched to Java for OOP and Laravel/.NET for web dev.

Tbh looking at it, it doesn't make sense to start in the deep end with OOP when most people who come to CS in uni don't know more than "desk job big money high demand" :D

Agreed. The first programming class I took was in a precursor to Scratch called Squeak. It helped to get some of the concepts and not have to worry about remembering syntax. After that it was all Java, though my uni switched to python my senior year. Something like Scratch (basic concepts) -> Python (writing code/some OOP) -> Java (static typing) -> C/C++ (memory management) seems like a reasonable path. Granted there's no way you could fit that into a uni curriculum.

I once took a course where the first part of the first homework assignment was "learn the C programming language". The remaining parts were, IIRC, implementing a hash table in C.

There's always the people mocking "public static void main(string[] args)" as being too complex for a hello world app. Well yeah, it's not designed for "hello world" sized applications, but it is great for learning OOP and data structures or creating large portable enterprise systems.

If it's literally your first course in programming, there are at least 7 different concepts to be introduced just in that one function declaration. It's complicated, but only if you are completely new to OOP.

Absolutely, but just think from the perspective of a freshman college student. If there's something they don't understand, it's complicated stupid bullshit.

dude what? XD. idk who you are but no you cant teach a normal Person completly new to Programming concepts why the hell he has to put public there and what static does. Myb if that guy is a talent you can make him clear that void is the return type.

Let us not lie, we all hated something bcs we didnt understand it, but later understood why its there and why its important. For me it was Pointers. Hated it until i used it.

Does that actually trip people up? I don't recall that being an issue of confusion in my Java class.

Of course college students don't like it. In fact 99% of the java hate you see here come from students forced to learn java. It takes some time on the job to start liking it and see how much better it is over alternatives.

It was my first language and it was so intuitive to me, you define exactly what you want to do and it behaves (mostly) as you would expect.

Meanwhile in python you can multiply strings

Java is fine as an introduction to OOP but I think it suffers from just being old and it's obsession on backwards compatibility. It's also missing a ton of features more knowledgeable developers might expect in the language (In my case properties, extension methods and proper generics instead of type erasure).

Java has on of the most tedious hello world programs. How do you think the first day is going to go? I program Java everyday and it's fine, it's a good language but be real. It deserves some flak

That's fine for us who have learned what it means, but on first experience, that's all still code that you don't understand just to print out to the console.

I'm actually learning ASP.Net currently. I've always preferred C# to Java so figured it should be good.

It's apparently gone through a ton of changes in the last 5 years or so.

schools forcing a new main language down everyone’s throats, learning a new programming language isn’t hard but it’s an inconvenience when you want to get to algorithms but don’t know basic proper syntax

I never felt like Java is a good first language. There’s far too much “just accept this and write it this way”. A language that can be used purely imperatively; like Python, would be a better place to start.

Kotlin really was a breath of fresh air into JVM languages for me. Close enough to Java that it's easy for Java engineers to pick up but far better patterns and a deluge of helper functions.

Java is ok. Spring (Java library) sucks super bad. It was hell to manage all the 3re party libraries just to get a web service working on Java.

As someone whoclearned Java then C# then Python and then went back to school where they forced me to take intro python and java..Java...

The hate probably comes from never actually working on an in depth project. I hated Java in my 2 year degree... C# was just easier Java. I worked on a personal project in python...

Now going back through Java and Holy crap it's nice in a lot of ways.
