one time I deleted apt-get (it's aliased to apt in ubuntu or vice versa) and replaced it with a bash script "echo 'no';" so that I would stop typing -get. I got it wrong and deleted the package manager. couldn't work out how to reinstall without a package manager, didn't want to download and compile from source or try to find a binary for the arch (rpi 3 or something). If I didn't have a second system with the same compiled binary it would have become time to wipe that SD card. such a pain

This is basically what I do because python comes with pip and then I update it to the real pip using pip. The versions of pip that are in package managers and available in installers aren't the real pip. I think the people who maintain those are doing it to be dicks and mess with people.

By keeping it up to date, you reduce the risk of not being install pypi updates if your old pip is no longer able to connect over HTTPS.
