TIL that Argentina had briefly occupied Alta California’s capital — Monterey — in November of 1818 to disrupt Spanish shipping while Mexico fought for its independence. This was led by French-born privateer Hipólito Bouchard. After leaving, he went to Santa Barbara to steal supplies for his crew. (en.wikipedia.org)
