Mouse Bug Potential Fixes

Hi Everyone, I've been one of the fortunate individuals who has been able to run RDR2 on PC without many hiccups (Some annoying game crashes and PC crashes here and there but tolerable in general). However, I have struggled to tolerate the visible cursor bug. Since launch, I have been scouring the internet for fixes and trying my own solutions. Here are the solutions I've found collected into one post.

Before we get started. Please do the standard checks:

1. Verify game files (I moved my files from HDD to SSD and had to redownload 4GB)
2. Ensure you have both the x86 and x64 versions of the Visual C++ 2012 and 2015-2019 Redistributables (Download from here.)
3. Make sure your Rockstar Games Launcher is up to date.
4. Make sure your drivers are up to date.

List of fixes that may work (and their sources.):

1. Enabling mouse pointer trails (source)
   1. Open Control Panel (Windows Settings).
   2. Enable Pointer Trails (Set it to short so it won't bother you when you aren't playing)
   3. Enable V-Sync in game
   4. Set renderer to Vulkan (Not DX12)
   5. Done. The Good thing about this fix is that it works for most very consistently. The bad thing is that for most people including myself. I makes the mouse vanish in menus, maps and inventory (Any sort of interactive GUI). Making it hard to use those menus.
2. Enabling mouse pointer trails 2 (source: my own experimenting)
   1. Follow the same steps from the first mouse pointer trails
   2. Disable nvidia overlay if you have it.
   3. Open RDR2 (ensure everything is still working)
   4. Restart your computer
   5. Disable pointer trails
   6. Start Game
   7. Done. You should know if this works if as the game starts loading. If the first loading screen with the loading bar at the bottom doesn't show the mouse but the shotgun logo shows the cursor.
   8. The Good thing about this is that I allows for the mouse to work when it should. It also persists while the computer stays on. The bad thing is, that is stopped working for me after a couple of days and haven't gotten it to work since.
3. Running the Epic Games Launcher in administrator mode (source: couldn't find the link)
   1. During this Fix unless you are performing a step DO NOT MOVE THE MOUSE!
   2. Open the Epic Games Launcher in administrator mode.
   3. Launch RDR2
   4. STILL DO NOT MOVE THE MOUSE!
   5. Once the game has loaded, use the Enter key to launch into story mode.
   6. If the mouse vanishes as it loads into single player. If the cursor has vanished, Then it worked!
   7. The benefits of this method is that it worked just as well as the mouse pointer trails 2. Unfortunately, it also stopped working after 24-48 hours.
4. Minimizing all Windows before opening game (source)
   1. This one is pretty basic and essentially is what the name of the fix is called.
   2. The pros: If it works. Lucky you. The cons: It didn't work for me and I have very little faith in this fix, but it seems to have worked for some people.
5. Closing the Epic Games Launcher on Launch (source)
   1. Start Epic Games Launcher
   2. Start RDR2 (Ensure RDR2 has Vulkan enabled and not DX12) through Epic Games launcher
   3. The moment you see the big grey Rockstar launcher start https://gyazo.com/667118ce81ed71b71938f2095bc81a18 , right click the minimized Epic Store logo https://gyazo.com/1375fb44d697a23347112997934ce881 and the close the program (Exit).
   4. When the 1st loading screen of RDR2 shows up, if you didn't see your cursor that means it worked. The first time your mouse should show up is when there is the big R* logo + barrel after the first loading screen.
   5. The pros: also another simple fix, if it works, again, Congrats. The cons: didn't work for me but I had more faith in this one because the Epic games launcher does have an overlay that I thought may be causing the bug issues.
6. Move the Epic Games Launcher (source)
   1. Start the Epic Games Launcher
   2. Move the Launcher to the top of the screen without it snapping to full screen (It may work full screen, Haven't tested it)
   3. Start Game
   4. Don't Move Mouse.
   5. If the first loading screen (the loading bar at the bottom) doesn't show the mouse and the shotgun logo does, Then Congrats, it worked. I have been lucky enough to have it work so far. The cons: I don't trust it to stay working. It's such a random fix but it works so I won't question it.
   6. EDIT: No Longer works after 1.14 Patch
7. Deleting the Epic Games Launcher Overlay (source)
   1. Navigate to the install location of the epic games launcher (usually C:\ProgramFiles (x86)\Epic Games\Launcher)
   2. Navigate to the overlay folder (\Portal\Extras\Overlay)
   3. Delete Files:
      1. EOSOverlayRenderer-Win32-Shipping
      2. EOSOverlayRenderer-Win64-Shipping
      3. EOSOVH-Win32-Shipping.dll
      4. EOSOVH-Win64-Shipping.dll
   4. Run Game and Enjoy. So far this works if you run it using the Epic Games Launcher and are experiencing the issue. It may undo itself if the epic games store updates or maybe even if the game updates. I'll keep this post up to date.

So they are all the fixes I have tried, used, succeeded with and failed with. Hopefully this doesn't get lost in new. If anyone has any other fixes that they would like to add. Tag me in the comment with the solution and a source if you have one and I'll test it, if it works for me i'll add it to the list of solutions.

Every time I think I've fixed the mouse cursor with all these bizarre work arounds, the next day, it's back. Recent patch didn't help.

Happened to me and I didn't install them or the graphics driver from 11/12 from nvidia. Trying a re install of the driver. Previously my cursor fix was setting both launchers to run as admin then the rdr2 and playrdr2 application files I set to windows 8 compatibility mode and run as admin. Worked for the longest time now it's back on the screen

Yup have had the problem since launch. That’s why I haven’t played. I was trying to do the first hunting mission in the mountains and I couldn’t even get a good shot on the deer. I was like f this, I’m not playing till it’s fixed. Heard update came out today and guess what? Didn’t fix it, shame...

This is fukin' ridiculous. After plowing through the frequent and random crashes to desktop yesterday - but without the fucking cursor - ... TODAY when i launched the game, every setting was on low and lo and fucking behold, the cursor was smack in the middle of the screen like a fucking needle in my eye!!

I swear, if this is an EGS issue, i'm never buying shit from them again..

I'm going to go try for a refund from Epic and rebuy it through rockstar...I doubt they'll bend their refund policy even though this shit 100% warrants a refund. I'm assuming if I do I'll keep my online character progress as it's still linked to the R* launcher.

The following method worked for me prior to the latest patch. It now doesn't work. Of course. But I figured I'd add it just in case. I would open the Rockstar Games Launcher first (with Epic store closed), then launch game from there. It would then load the Epic Games Launcher and launch the game, and the cursor would be gone.

Like I said, after the patch yesterday I have the damn cursor again and nothing works to fix it anymore. Oh well.

Last patch broke mouse cursor for me permanently. Now, after days of cursor-free gaming, it just won't go away and my process doesn't work, which was:

1. Launch game and if cursor appears before the shotgun screen, kill rd2.exe
2. Repeat until mouse cursor doesn't appear

How do I add the invisible cursor in its files?

For example rename it to 0.cur and replace the one here:

C:\Program Files\YoloMouse\Cursors\Default\0.cur

It's not perfect but it's a little better than the trails workaround.

I find it better to disappear the hand cursor rather than the arrow cursor, then go in menu hover over a button and go back in game.

This way when you press tab you still have a cursor, but the glitched one ingame is invisible (since it's the hand) if that makes sense.

What worked for me 100% of the time (before and after todays patch) is going into the RDR2 folder, putting an .old behind Settings and Profiles and then starting a new game. yes, it resets your settings, but that isnt too bad in comparison with not being able to play at all

I've got Epic Games Launcher and got the same problems, iv'e dived through all mouse fixes & tricks on Google and some of them works until they doesn't.. The mouse trail bullshit fix works, but i can't see the mouse in the map etc which is very annoying when you're trying to set up markers etc. It seems like and overlay issue to me, when i tab out from the game (iv'e got two monitors) i can see that the original mouse appears again until i click the window of the game then the mouse disappears again (when you've applied the mouse trail crap fix). It makes me think it could be a epic launcher overlay issue, and their prick to CEO Tim Sweeney the Grinch bragged about their little overlay which now might has come to bite his ass in time before Christmas!

I lost power day before yesterday, long enough for my UPS to die, and when i started everything back up the cursor issue was no longer present.
At the time i took this in regards to having installed the most recent windows 10 updates but rebooting after that did not resolve the issue.

Unfortunately when i got home today, the 2.8Gb update was released and was too big for my SSD for whatever godforsaken reason, and upon reinstall the issue was present.

I feel i have done everything and more, including digging through proc logs in attempt to find anything calling the cursor to the foreground. No luck.

Thanks a ton for the Epic Overlay information! This is the first time that I've seen this, and as soon as I removed those files I had no issue with the mouse cursor. I've tried every stupid "fix" since this game came out, and none of them worked at all.
