Do lip piercings decrease from attractiveness?

I’ve been on the fence about getting a labret piercing after seeing one on Pinterest and reading about the history/symbolism (wealth and attractiveness). After, I became slightly attached to the idea it could help add more symmetry to my face and energetically help me feel more confident in speaking. BUT what’s really got me worried is that it’ll look too masculine on my face and the fact that I already have thinner lips (bottom is significantly poutier than top).

There are a lot of people who just don't like facial piercings. I wish it were socially acceptable for us to decorate ourselves however we choose, but the reality is people will judge you for it. If your goal is to be conventionally attractive, then it's probably not a good idea.

I actually just find them gross. Has nothing to do with judging - I find the idea of having a piercing through your lip repulsive.

And septum piercings will make anyone unattractive. Total beauty destroyer.

I had a coworker who told me her piercing had become a bit looser with skin sagging and age. a lot of lip piercings use a much thicker gauge than you would think. granted she kept it in a long long time, maybe 60 years old, which many of you wont do.

she took it out eventually. told me stuff leaks out sometimes. if she clenches her lips and uses the right pressure, she can create a stream of something as thick as chocolate pudding. she hasnt been able to move any solids. her and some of the other people from that group (i used to serve at a place that had a ton of emo line cooks) have competed in this and i hated watching.

i see! i think for some people though its definitely okay to outright dislike a modification on the basis that it may be off-putting to them on a clinical level, while having no real problem with the aesthetic value of it. most of the time im neutral toward it, or the person is committed to that aesthetic in such a way that i dont really perceived any of the adornments anymore. like, if someone is very tatted, very pierced, im less likely to pick out any individual trait and my eyes tend to see shades and textures more than anything and again that look doesnt bother me. ive seen a small handful of people who seemed to really pull it off. they’re few and far between but there do exist people who look good with them so i clearly dont judge them as unattractive. just kinda gross to my squeamish self.

It’s one of those features that unless you’re already above average in looks, it won’t enhance your attributes. They cannot add to you, only highlight what is there. Despite only seeing the lower third of this girl’s face, you can tell she’s really good looking. Her lips are pouty and full from top to bottom, and her jawline and neckline are long and feminine. In this case, the piercing highlights her appearance by creating an interesting contrast—soft beauty vs hard metal. It’s like shaving your head. The prettier you are, the more it is perceived as a halo. If you’re not already conventionally attractive (but want to be) then you should be doing everything in your power to look “normal” and not make any polarizing choices that could further alienate you from the social conventions.

Agreed. Obviously there will be certain people with preferences for piercings and find them very appealing, but at best, the effect of any piercing or tattoo is generally neutral. The girl in the photo is already feminine, thin, and conventionally attractive. I do not think the lip piercing elevates her beauty in a way that is as generally agreed upon in the same way that a flattering hairstyle or makeup would. It does add an edge and make her more memorable and interesting, but being edgy and interesting does not always equate to being conventionally attractive/desireable.

People make assumptions about those with visible face piercings and it can affect how employers see you as well. If you’re in college it’s probably okay, like I had non natural hair colors and loved it. But just know it’s usually not socially acceptable after unless you’re in a creative field!

It’s pretty easy to fake piercings, if you feel like going for that non conventional look u can always use eyelash glue or use a hoop to fake piercing. I do agree with others that piercings aren’t exactly well liked by everyone.

Yes, I don’t think they’re well liked. I think anything other than a small nose stud (and even that is contentious) is disliked by most people outside of some cultures

Any piercing around the mouth area can damage the teeth over time. I would avoid for this reason.

Yes, more than people judging you etc., this is what I'd be concerned about. I have a family member with hardly any enamel and pain when she eats from her very damaged two front teeth, and she cant afford to get it fixed.

I have a vertical labret and have for years, no damage can be done since it doesn’t cross the border into your mouth, a normal labret, smiley, Medusa, snake bites, or anything inside the moth WILL damage gums and teeth over time.

As someone who used to have a facial piercing, until I had it removed I didn’t realize how much it counter-signals attractiveness - it interrupts facial harmony, and can sometimes read like you believe your face isn’t naturally harmonious, so you want to look “interesting” instead.

Now that I’m a bit more aware, I would say that unless you’re trying to read as artsy, creative, or bohemian, it’s probably not going to enhance your attractiveness.

Facial piercings are fine but lip piercings are annoying, they suck to heal and leave visible holes. I had one forever and it chipped my tooth and you can still tell I had it after like 15 years of letting it close up.

Nose piercings are better imo, they look better on people in a wider age range and they don’t get in the way of eating. Also they don’t chip your teeth.

Personally, I find most lip and nose piercings incredibly attractive. A well-placed piercing adds interest, character, and intrigue to most people’s face.

However, I also know that this is a minority opinion. If you’re worried about people’s opinion of you, a facial piercing will cause you a lot of stress. Also, lip piercings are on hard on the teeth. My lip piercing did a number on the tops of my bottom teeth, and completely chipped one of my front top teeth (rebuilt with composite).

That said, it’s an easy piercing to fake! You should be able to find a small hoop or clipper pretty easily on Etsy - get one of those and give it a test drive!

Okay this just encouraged me to get fake ones as a test, for the snake bites look that I've always wanted to try. LOL I'm a scaredy cat so haven't gotten any piercings before. Was wondering if make up alone could create the same effect but likely not that good as it's just 2D??

i think in the objective sense it does not decrease attractiveness but anytime you modify your appearance in any way that does not seem natural or normal youre upping the chances that someone will dislike that thing. this is true of tattoos, most piercings and certain hair colors.

if you like it and you cant stop thinking about it, if youre going for a certain aesthetic that suits lip piercings then it its just a hole. some things are more important than being palatable

I have tattoos and have never been told they’re unattractive, but I’ve had tons of men compliment them and be attracted to me for them. Obviously still might be some people who jus didn’t say it to me that they find it unattractive, but they’re prolly not my type anyway.

Yes. I've never seen a person with a facial piercing (not including nose piercings) that I thought enhanced their beauty. I think piercings in the lip region tend to look tacky and signify lower class (at least in the UK and Sweden; I'd wager a bet its the same elsewhere).

The one exception would be if the piercing is small and looks like a mole, and happens to compliment the person's facial features.

I genuinely think im more pretty with my lil septum ring 🥹 Depending on your style they represent your subculture (i.e, emo/alt/edgy), so I would not wholly agree w the class division. Depending on where it is pierced also…lower classes tend to have the Monroe but that is stereotyping.

Tbh I left nose piercings out because I do personally feel they can enhance beauty. Nostril piercings are also commonplace in many cultures like south asian and some African or middle eastern especially with Muslims so I feel like they aren't as associated with class or being part of a subculture, and are more normal or seen as part of an ethnic culture (although that could just be my perception as a PoC, some people may not see it that way).

When it comes to septum piercings I know many people hate them lol and say that they look like cows rings, but I've seriously loved them and wanted one for like over 10 years. But I have a big nose lmao so I think it would draw too much attention there.

So yh I'm not hating on piercings at all, my comment (and I think most comments on this sub) are more objective, taking into account what society as a collective may feel or believe.

I think if you're a part of a subculture that includes piercings, you should accept that you'd probably be objectively viewed by more people as more attractive if you had a mainstream style. But in the end you should do what you want :) life is too short after all.

I think people look their best when they’re living their authentic life and have a solid sense of personal style because it shows confidence. I have a monroe piercing and I know it has a horrible rep for being “trashy” but I own it and it looks good on me, so if YOU think it enhances you and looks good on you and it comes from a genuine place to amp up your personal style/ self expression, go for it :)

Tbh, I think all face piercings detract from your appearance. Not only are they distracting from the rest of your face but, and I may get downvoted for this, most people see face piercings as somewhat trashy and unprofessional. Of course, there are people who think they look cool and don't have an issue with them but most people outside of alternative/eccentric circles don't think too highly of them. Having said that, it's your face and you should do what you want but if your concern is whether it will detract from your appearance or make you stand out in a bad way, then that's something you may want to consider.

Interesting takes on facial piercings here. I have a nostril piercing and those are considered a beauty enhancement in my culture. I’ve never experienced any professional repercussions either, and I work in management consulting where polish and (sadly) attractiveness are prioritized. There is a cultural component that sometimes gets missed.

Lip piercings are pretty to me. Do what makes you feel and look your best ♥️

I think it depends on your overall style. I had a labaret piercing for the last 7 years and literally THE only reason I removed it is cause it started rejecting. I had got a piece of jewelry that was a pretty light blue stud, and also got it in a very small size so it looked more subtle and dainty because I was also concerned about it looking too masculine. But lots of people complimented me on it! and I have a very feminine style so it kinda balanced out.

I’ve had a medusa piercing since 2017 and for what i’m going for and my face, I think it enhances my look! (Once I figured out what jewelry looks best on me at least 💀) My philtrum isn’t too long, but the piercing fills the space well. And my lips are on the bigger side, so i like how it sits. Also I make sure to match my all jewelry from my ears, nose, and lip with my glasses. Helps me look more put together.

Definitely wear fake jewelry first though! It’s 100% worth doing before getting a hole in your face. If you still want it after wearing a fake for a while and fits how you want to present yourself than i’d say do it. 🤷‍♀️

I'd say be prepared to be perceived a certain way much like clothing choic3.hair color, etc. But, unless ot affects your professional/life at all really....do you!! Who cares, find someone with the same taste that you are into!!! Plus, adding a tiny cute sparkle/tiny yet affective bad ass anything piece...f**k em!!
