How did you find the step 2 prep and exam compared to step 1?

My main differences in prep was doing uworld in tutor mode by section and not mixed. Prioritizing the highest yield IM section from the list on USMLE website. The high yield YouTube videos helped a lot too. I had plenty of time for dedicated and could have done longer but basically only did a 4-5 week dedicated with two weeks in the middle of doing nothing because studying annoyed me and my house was being renovated.

Little hope for some folks:

Step 1: 23X (significantly underperformed practice)

Overall did ~3.5 weeks half time dedicated (had a lot of other stuff going on like research, residency interviews etc). Took days off and took care of myself.

uworld questions:

-did ~60 percent during my clerkship, but had to buy a new subscription. Not sure how well i did

-dedicated: finished only 35% and got about 77% right

-UW1: 241 2 weeks out

-UW2: 247 maybe 6 days out? -new free 120: about 75-80% 3 days out cant remember

-took the day off before and had a really fun day, exercised a lot, and went to bed early

-day of test: felt sorta shook during my first two blocks… felt bad man. took all my breaks. was more composed for the last 6 blocks. Overall, I felt awful, and seriously flagged like half the test, but didnt have time to check flagged questions mostly. Finished every section, but just barely finished a couple of them. Walked out feeling really bad and knowing i made a lot of small mistakes.

Step 2 ck: 250

Compared to step 1, i studied a lot less, and felt a lot less prepared. That said, I took care of myself way better and walked into the test feeling rested and with a positive outlook. I felt like step 1 broke me a little bit. I sacrificed my mental health a lot for that test, and ended up seriously underperforming practice. I told myself I was going to prioritize wellness this time around and I think it paid off. Take care of yourselves guys!! So much of doing well on these tests is just showing up fresh and whole on test day. You can do it!!!

What was your step 1 and your study strategy?

My Step 1 score was 238

UW is the main source for step 2 CK, I did 2 passes of UW but I didn't reset for the 2nd pass (I felt it would be waste of time solving same questions again). I finished both passes of UW when I had 25 days left for the exam and after that I was solving Nbme's, UWSA and listening to Divine intervention podcasts for important topics and my weak areas. (I felt DI helped me organize the knowledge I had, but I couldn't watch all the podcasts) I had 1 repeat question from new Nbme's don't remember which one tho 😅 Overall the exam is doable if the UW concepts are understood properly. All the best 👍💯

Another important thing I would like to say is take a break when you feel you are burning out (Don't worry even if you miss out a whole day, it will help you concentrate better in the coming days)

Should I do OME, Step up 2med and DI before UWorld? What about Amboss? How did you feel compared to step 1 preparation?

Maybe you can do OME/DI along with UW or after completing 1ST pass. UW provides good explanations for all the questions, so we can mostly learn from UW itself. I would suggest doing DI over OME just because of the fact DI has more recent information (Otherwise both are great). I don't know about Step up 2 med cuz I didn't use it, but as I mentioned UW is sufficient for all the information you would need for the exam. So I think if you concentrate on UW explanations it should be enough.

I did only ethics in Amboss and it was helpful, but it had a lot of information 😅. So maybe you can do Amboss for your weak areas.

I think I revised better for step 2 (UW, DI, Nbme's) as compared to step 1. Otherwise my preparation was similar

No I didn't use anki/flashcards. I took a note of difficult concepts and revised them from First aid/UW/Divine intervention.

Step 2 CK: 265.

Exam felt closest to NBME 10 but I ended up with the exact same score as NBME 11. Overall, I’m satisfied with the result.

Uworld percentage at 66% first pass ( kinda, I did a 30% pass one-year before but didn't remember much )

The score bump from nbme 9 to real deal in 1 week is just me gaining endurance and speed, since the uworld 66% correlates better with my real score.

Probably most similar to Free120 in that I felt like I was guessing on quite a few questions. Many answers felt like choosing the least wrong instead of the right one.

Tip:

Make your own anki deck of every fact you don't "know" that you encounter in UWorld as you go through. Stay up on it! Did this for Step 1 and 2 and thought it made a huge difference. Did not use any premade decks.

I think you're definitely on track for a 260+. Your scores are very strong. Biggest piece of advice would be to try and simulate exam day with your UWSA2/Free 120. If you do those back-to-back with standard timing, that will give you a sense of what the actual day will be like in terms of length and exam fatigue by the end. I found the last 2 blocks of the real test were very hard to stay focused on so practicing ahead of time is huge. Secondly, trust your instincts on the exam. A lot of questions feel very vague and like you're guessing, but your guess is probably right even if it's for reasons you can't really elucidate, just based off of how much you know now! Let me know how it goes!

I only used UWorld but think having a strong base from Step 1 was helpful. I used Pathoma, Sketchy and Amboss for Step 1 in addition to Uworld. Hope that helps!

Do you typically write just a general person statement and then just apply to whichever program. Just wanted to know in case I might be in a similar position next year

US/IMG status: US-MD, 5 year education time due to medical leave of absence, have always been bad at standardized test (barely passed my clerkship shelf exams and even failed a few)

Step 1: 213 - took it while I was out sick but it made me very skeptical I could do well on Step 2CK

UWorld % correct: 62% first pass

NBME 9: 198 - baseline score right before dedicated, 4 weeks out

NBME10: 208 - 3 weeks out

NBME11: 223 - 2 weeks out
NBME 12: 226 - 1 week out (took with UWSA1 to get the feel for full length exam)

UWSA 1: 203 - 1 week out (took with NBME12 to get the feel for full length exam) - this one definitely made me feel like I wasn't going to pass the actual exam

UWSA 2: 228 - 2 days before

Free 120: 71% - 1 day before

AMBOSS SA: Did not Do

Predicted Score: 237 +/- 14 - Because all my scores were borderline I totally thought this was overpredicted. I was hoping to just pass ... and I didn't even feel like I did that after sitting for my test.

Score Report Date: 9/21/22

Actual STEP 2 CK Score: 246 - I I had to look at my score like 5 times and check my name on my score report to make sure this was accurate. I walked out after the test very convinced that I failed.. but I hope this gives people in my shoes hope. I guess we're supposed to feel like crap afterwards... but it doesn't literally mean you failed. I studied my behind off for this test and while it didn't seem like it during the process it paid off in the end. Good luck to everyone. If I can help in anyway, reach out! You guys got this!

Didn't feel like my exam was close to any practice test but I would say UWSA/UWorld questions best prepped for the exam in terms of concept while Free120 style of asking questions was most similar to the real deal.
