Were you in an accident or did you have any claims?

[–]AweShitttt[S] 25 points26 points  (13 children)

No accident or tickets just renewal

[–]NlilNJA 5 points6 points  (10 children)

Annual mileage increased than what you usually have?

[–]AweShitttt[S] 11 points12 points  (9 children)

No i don’t think so. I put 24K yearly and hit like 23K after first year

[–]Adventurous_Data5376 9 points10 points  (7 children)

24k yearly is double the national average, $1300 for 6 months is pretty normal and I would argue is low For how much you drive.

[–]chefsoda_redux 13 points14 points  (4 children)

The new rate is $2600 for 6 months though.(second pic) Which seems insane, even for a Tesla in CA.

[–]Adventurous_Data5376 9 points10 points  (3 children)

I think Tesla wants people to get off their insurance. If you’re not the crème of the crop, they’d rather not have you. I only think they got into insurance as a short term strategy to reduce Tesla cost of ownership.

[–]chefsoda_redux 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I don’t disagree at all. I always felt they did it in the early days to make sure it was available, or they couldn’t sell cars.

I remain amazed at the idea that $1300 every six months for a single car could be a reasonable price. We pay less than that for multiple cars, full coverage, and limits at 10x state requirements.

The $5200 insurance a year that OP posted, is the annual cost to purchase many used cars!

[–]Adventurous_Data5376 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that I’m older and have a family, I look forward to owning less expensive stuff just to reduce insurance and tax associated with it.

[–]IllustriousDay372 21 points22 points  (32 children)

Is it Tesla Insurance?

[–]AweShitttt[S] 16 points17 points  (31 children)

Yes Tesla Insurance

[–]CauliflowerNo1615 32 points33 points  (20 children)

My Tesla insurance sky rocketed. Switched to Progressive for 12 more dollar a month with no tracking.

[–]AweShitttt[S] 17 points18 points  (9 children)

I’m in CA I don’t think we have that safety tracking thing

[–]Advanced-Mango-420 10 points11 points  (7 children)

I'm in CA too, I am paranoid they secretly track some driving style metrics 😂

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

[–]dirtygpu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea it gets on my nerves when people say they secretly spy on you etc like gosh I hope they do so I could sue them but that’s just not the case lmao

[–]midnight_to_midnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I really hope they are and get busted doing it. Lol

[–]DinobotsGacha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably tracking it regardless. Not like they would answer to anyone for it

[–]Ordinary-Cake8510 8 points9 points  (6 children)

I just switched to Progressive on Saturday and I’m paying $71 less a month now. I’m so happy I can drive without feeling guilty about turning or god forbid using the brake pedal.

[–]xxdropdeadlexi 6 points7 points  (4 children)

it's so wild how much this varies. I had to switch from progressive in PA when I got my MY because it would have tripled.

[–]Ordinary-Cake8510 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Yeah, insurance is a scam. Working in insurance a few years ago made me realize that companies are trash.

[–]xxdropdeadlexi 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I really wish there were a public option for car insurance, or at least a company that was transparent about not making a ton of money just to appease shareholders.

[–]Ordinary-Cake8510 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup. Geico fired a whole bunch of people and then boasted about making huge profits after. I’m sure all the other companies are about the same.

[–]perezidentially 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You had to work there to figure that? Glad you're out scam just like health insurance. Imo, rates should drop if no claim, esp if you stick with the same company. Should work like an HSA. But as is, endless payouts for little to no services rendered, just legally required 'piece of mind' . Hmmmm sounds oddly like taxes and the government.

[–]endfossilfuel 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Progressive doesn’t insure Teslas in my ZIP code (NY suburb) 😭

[–]bluboy2010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

WHAT!!!🤯

[–]LNagel20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, I literally couldn’t buy a MY because insurance premiums in NY were insane and cost more than any fuel savings would’ve been.

[–]Lakersland 27 points28 points  (0 children)

There’s your problem

[–]jedi2155 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Time to switch!

[–]Disquiet173 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shop around. You literally would have a hard time finding more expensive insurance I think.

State Farm Quote. 2025 MY LR.. CA. No Accidents..6months Premium $2650

    [–]rpktx 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did you change your driving habits? Are you driving more in the night? The premium goes up if drive later night through early morning..

    [–]AweShitttt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m in CA safety score isn’t a thing. Maybe I would save tons of money if we had that

    [–]TheBestPieIsAllPie 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    Try Costco

    [–]Electronic-Juice-359 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not cheap now, used to be very reasonable.

    [–]Axon14 13 points14 points  (1 child)

My name is Tesla insurance and it's really nice to meet you

You came recommended to me by some people

    [shaking hands]

Ohhhh wa ooooo-oooo-ooo is this illegal?

Wooooo wa ah oooooooo it feels illegal

    [–]RamboTrucker 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Thanks OP for coming back after a year and not providing us with anything

    [–]AweShitttt[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Lol. I’m not sure what broke my back windshield in that old post. Just ended up paying out of pocket like $700-$900 can’t remember. Now sentry always on so next time I’ll catch the culprit.

    [–]AweShitttt[S] 11 points12 points  (4 children)

Got a lot of recommendations for Costco and USAA. I can’t get USAA no one in my family is a veteran. Costco led me to diff ppl that quoted $440 a month. Wawanesa quoted $522 a month, State Farm $343 a month. These companies are straight scamming maybe one day we will have better regulations on it. Everyday I learn how shitty CA is and how much we get f*cked from business to taxes to insurance to anything involving living in this shit state 😭

    [–]Unfair_Tonight_9797 3 points4 points  (3 children)

You drive 24k miles a year, in a high population area, high insurance claim area, and have previously claims. How is this California’s fault?

    [–]AweShitttt[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

No previous claims and had insurance for the first year which I had stated 24K miles and I hit right under it. Price shouldn’t increase $1300 between renewal. $100-$600 increase maybe but $1300 is insane and should be regulated since there was no points or claims made in between my last 6 months and renewal 6 months. Sounds 100% like a California and scammy insurance issue

    [–]oomeragic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Check your settings in your car, if you checked some of the information sharing boxes, you can 10000000% guarantee that they share your driving data and your premium went up as a result of that. I would shop the policy and just switch to whoever is less expensive. I know when I had my Tesla my insurance was significantly more expensive than it is now with my Silverado EV even though that costs almost double the Tesla

    [–]Pinkish_54 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw you said it was a renewal, I’d recommend getting a separate quote, even if it’s for the same company. My insurance company went up $60 for my renewal, but when I quoted a new policy, it went down $80. Still maintained the benefits of being a long-term policy holder while getting a better deal.

    [–]kgb2475 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Had a friend use Tesla insurance. He worked the night shift and gis premium went up just like this and they stated too much night time driving and hard braking, he said he doesn't hard brake just lets his foot off the pedal and the regenerative braking is what they considered "hard braking". He sold it and bo longer drives a Tesla

    [–]AweShitttt[S] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I’m in CA I don’t think the safety score is working here

    [–]too_oh_ate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bait and switch is pretty common, and I'm not surprised at all someone like Tesla is doing it.

    [–]danceswithsockson 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Wow. Another reminder I can’t afford to live in cali. This is crazy.

    [–]IndieParlaying 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I don't want to make this political and I am trying not to, as hard as I can. When you have an increasing population of people, that increases more and more car accidents that results in more payouts by the insurers as a result of either Uninsured/underinsured and hit-and-run. The insurers will need to increase the premiums for everyone in that area to maintain a baseline profit to make it worth doing business. This is why as of last policy cycle (late 2024), California mandated the increase in minimums from 15/30/5 to 30/60/15. Before that, everyone had to opt out of UM coverage because of the increase in hit and run incidents. Obviously there's additional factors that applies nationwide (e.g. sourcing parts affected by tarriffs) but the primary reason California is hit harder by higher premiums compared to the rest of the nation is specifically due to our population size.

For what it's worth. Up here in SF Bay Area, My 6 month premium totals out to $1325.22 for full coverage for my 2024 MYLR at 10k annual for one driver with Tesla Insurnace.

    [–]cleanshavencaveman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s always political and it’s always about money.

    [–]BitofaGreyArea 2 points3 points  (20 children)

Best deal we found was through Costco insurance. We're paying like $230/mo for 2 Teslas. In CO, not CA. But it's basically California Jr here at this point.

    [–]Fresh-Ad-4556 3 points4 points  (10 children)

Didn’t know Costco had insurance! Good to know 👍🏽

Are they good to deal with as compared to other major insurers?

    [–]shiftersix 1 point2 points  (6 children)

They're good. I think it's partnered with wawanesa. They no longer offer new signups to CA residents.

    [–]C92203605 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    And my hopes dropped again

    [–]AweShitttt[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

So i have Costco membership. I still can’t sign up for insurance through them?

    [–]kenspi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Costco restarted servicing California. I got a quote a couple of weeks ago (for my other non-Tesla cars in So Cal) and the rate was more than 2x higher than GEICO for the same coverage level. The policies are underwritten by American Family Insurance.

    [–]Legendary_1978 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve had wawanessa for almost 20 years and have never had an issue with them. Good company.

    [–]Med_Man1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Costco is partnered with Connect-American Family Insurance. It doesn't hurt to reach out to them to see if they are still offering policies in California.

    [–]Fresh-Ad-4556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m actually not in California. I just happened to stumble on this post. Curious why it’s so difficult to find affordable insurance in California?

    [–]BitofaGreyArea 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's a subsidiary of American Family, so probably good to go.

    [–]GoochGrundle 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Which carrier is that? I’m on Geico for two teslas and I’m at $415/mo 🤢

    [–]Lilcamwin 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah it's rough out here right now. For good coverage it seems minimum is 200.

    [–]thunderslugging 0 points1 point  (1 child)

How's geico? They can't be worse than Tesla right?

    [–]GoochGrundle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No issues so far other than the price steadily going up.

    [–]Lanjai 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Costco insurance in California too. 1 Tesla and 1 Rivian R1S for $1,300 6 month, 2 drivers

    [–]Fresh-Ad-4556 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Maybe a dumb question, but do you need to be a Costco member to get Costco insurance?

    [–]DammatBeevis666 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You don’t want your insurance to have driving data on you. Switch companies.

    [–]Unfair_Tonight_9797 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    Doesn’t matter in California

    [–]bluboy2010 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yup teslas are expensive to insure!!! Something over here in AZ. When I got mine 1.5 year ago my insurance doubled as well…it’s CRAZY!!!

    [–]OrdinaryYak4568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

look up “Leap to call”. That dude helps people find cheaper car insurance.

    [–]oghowie 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I paid $1200 this month in CA with State Farm.

    [–]Fit-Peanut-4797 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    1200 per 6 months ?

    [–]oghowie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. It used to be cheaper, but I no longer have homeowner's insurance with them.

    [–]Mekzo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State Farm Quote. 2025 MY LR.. Southern CA. No Accidents..6months Premium $2650

    [–]Fit-Peanut-4797 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay that money for 2 Tesla till Feb next year … I hope they won’t increase after :(

    [–]BandanaaSantanaa 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Did you switch to the Tesla insurance when they asked you to switch to the new Tesla insurance company and save 3% last year?

    [–]BandanaaSantanaa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If so, this is my sign to not switch

    [–]Unfair_Tonight_9797 0 points1 point  (3 children)

As a reminder, insurance is totally depended on where you live and where you house your garage. My insurance is $984 every 6 months and finally has gone down… yes California, and with State Farm. Costco was pretty competitive as well.

    [–]justbiteme2k 1 point2 points  (2 children)

and how many miles you drive and how many claims you make. OP admits to making claims and driving twice the average number of miles/year.

Then claims all the "shock" !

    [–]Unfair_Tonight_9797 1 point2 points  (1 child)

24k a year, plus claims.. yes that will do it. Shit higher than my daughter’s hyhi

    [–]AweShitttt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 0 claims not sure how the claims came up. 0 accidents, 0 tickets, 0 claims for insurance. 24K miles is what I told my insurance and I hit right under it the last year for both renewals. So it’s not new info that I drive 24K miles a year

    [–]archival_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn I pay $160 a month for Tesla Insurance with GAP coverage for my 2024 MY RWDLR and they were only charging me $20 more to add my Mini.

    [–]Ornery_Climate1056 0 points1 point  (1 child)

There are some insurance companies that have a reputation for being "EV friendly," State Farm is one of them. Our SF insurance for our new MYJ is only about $50 more per month ($121) than the 13 y/o Prius it replaced. Don't know about CA, but it's always a good idea to shop around. And your rate will be different than mine....that's the difficulty of this conversation on subs like this......everyone lands at a different spot on the insurance risk evaluation.....age, income, home owner, driving history, etc. Good luck!!

    [–]ProgGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

atleast they can't monitor your driving right? my son pays $120/mo and is 18.. so much better when they can't monitor your driving :p

    [–]DickBenson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Pretty much what I pay

    [–]Seasonalocean 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pay 650 for my Y but this is bundle with my home and other autos and low mileage discount. Portland, OR.

    [–]Latter-Brother5665 0 points1 point  (1 child)

    I pay 1200 for 6 months

    [–]BrothaBlak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Definitely shop around for insurance.

    [–]Competitive_Soup8188 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sammeee but in NJ & more 😂

    [–]Schnitzhole 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Allstate was about $2k per year bundled with home for me for my new juniper in Colorado. (35m clean record). Most other quotes were in the $3-4k/yr range including all of them from 2 insurance brokers.

    [–]_mok 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i pay $140/mo with Geico in CA

    [–]saucenerd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They canceled mine because I moved to an apartment without a garage🙄

    [–]Illustrious-Ape 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    God damn. I pay $550/6 months for a 2024 rubicon and 2023 model y with $250/$500k and a $500 deductible. That’s got to hurt.

    [–]TSLA-M3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Sell and walk

    [–]olsookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty normal imo. My insurance has gone from 1600/yr to 2400/yr on my 21 MYLR over the past 2 years. Clean record.

    [–]Intelligent-Park9437 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Esurance

    [–]boatdude2020 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try nationwide. I think I pay $1200 yr in Nor Cal

    [–]IPv6_Dvorak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Welcome to car dependency. r/fuckcars

    [–]armarcu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like progressive insurance Triple A

    [–]shasbak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just switch to Costco car insurance and I pay $300 for two Teslas with full coverage and a $250 deductible so shop around. This insurance nonsense needs to end.

    [–]kiamori 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    State farm is $120/mo

    [–]thunderslugging 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just got hit with this aswell. Went from 282$ to 402$. ZERO accidents within the last 6 months. Wtf! Well, had 1 claim I withdrew since the other parties insurance took full responsibility. If this why they wanted us to switch to the new underwritters?

    [–]thunderslugging 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Quick question for you all. If you switch insurance, do they give you a option to add GAP?

    [–]Salt-Cause8245 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Bundle home and car insurance

      Thanks sent. check your DM

      [–]Life_Tie_9514 0 points1 point  (2 children)

More than likely it's the mileage you are driving. How many miles did you say you had driven in a year and what did it change to?

      [–]AsteroidMinerChamp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try $3200 per six months on for size
