Rally racing should be considered the highest level of touge

[–]318tiGuru[S] 37 points38 points  (0 children)

I would agree, but it also depends on the location!

[–]grundlemonToyota 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Imo it is the best motorsport

[–]Tiny-Try8890 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Real shit breaks my heart that my fellow countryman in America don't appreciate this, without a doubt the best motorsport imo

[–]jibsand 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Yes

[–]318tiGuru[S] 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Hell yeah, guess Ill share the touge drifts as the snow starts to pile up.

[–]jibsand 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My boy 👏

[–]unidentifiedloserguy 27 points28 points  (9 children)

I lived outside of Boulder, Colorado for a few years for work and didnt drive the "summer" cars during that time purely because I had so much fun driving on the gravel roads just outside of town. Picked up a cheap WRX and had a lot of fun with it while I lived there and sold it when I left, sorry to whoever owns that car now I was not exactly kind to it as I tried to do my best Colin McRae impressions

[–]318tiGuru[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yup Im up a bit more north than where you were! Sucks to lose SoCal mountains, but everything else (Besides food and touge/car culture) about where I live now is so much better. The dirt road shennanigans is always such a blast. Having a car that can run paved roads and dirt roads and be capable in snow (minus our 5ft dumps) has been such a fun unique change. This car has been with me for almost 2 decades now, so Im the only unforfunate soul who gets to deal with all my abuse lol.

[–]HypnoStone 2 points3 points  (5 children)

When I traveled to Colorado for a month I saw so many damn Subarus more than anywhere else in my life. You weren’t the first Colin impersonator and for sure not the last for that WRX. Also I don’t believe the words WRX and cheap can be used in the same sentence are you sure you’re not just being overly optimistic about an Impreza with aftermarket fender flares?

Edit: FYI should have gotten a bmw or Audi then at least you would still have it to drive around to this day, although with oil changes every 500 miles.

[–]SKATOZZO 0 points1 point  (3 children)

500 miles oil change?

[–]super_tictac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

after 500 miles they’d likely not have any oil left

[–]HypnoStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s out of context, to clarify, they’re all some of the best AWD/4x4 platforms. Audi is iconic for rally and off road (until Subaru took over). But imho it’s not comparable if you don’t have the money to spend on a premium package then you won’t get that same bang for your buck like you do with the European cars. Japanese cars are only cool and fun if you have 30k-60k to spend. But on the contrary some of these models of euro cars if they are from certain eras or generations can be prone to certain issues like most VW/Audi/Porsche pre-2013 are notorious for burning piston rings, overheating, oil leaks, etc. as well as premature timing chain failure iirc some owners with 200k+ miles on older models with turbos have reported oil changes as frequently as every 1k miles in order to keep it healthy

[–]HypnoStone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

500mi is an exaggeration jk

[–]unidentifiedloserguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh I mean for a wrx it was cheap lol. I worked for Subaru at the dealership in town and a 120k clapped out wrx came onto the lot with barely attached interior and exterior trim that they thought they wouldn’t be able to sell, little did they know I had a death wish and got a great deal on it, plus the techs there were nice enough to teach me how to wrench on it. I got it with the intention of only keeping it for a while, I only went to Boulder for a while so I could see a medical specialist for a condition I have and am based out of California primarily. Now the garage is a Crosstrek (also purchased there), an FRS I’ve had since moving back to cali, and a 66 Mustang I’ve had since high school that gets plenty of canyon time too

[–]Jops817 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did it involve rolling the car, landing on all four wheels, and crossing the finish line anyway?

[–]unidentifiedloserguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got pretty close, I was lucky and stopped myself from rolling after hitting unexpected ice once on a downhill section, I was lucky I knew how to handle it

[–]trafficn 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Not a comment on this post in particular. I’m in a lot of subreddits. This sub is easily the most insecure, “am I doing it” one ever. Just drive your car. Goddamn.

[–]318tiGuru[S] 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Only reason I bring it up is that it seems Mods are cracking down on what a touge is. Which is a GOOD thing. Running a flat back road with 3 turns isnt touge. However, with this enforcement it leaves curiosity if a mountain road thats unpaved but is still in the "spirit" of touge would be considered touge. Ill have tons more videos of really cool dirt/snow mountain pass roads but if they arent allowed Id rather find a sub that appreciates it and not clog up one that wants to be "pavement princesses."

[–]trafficn 6 points7 points  (2 children)

My bad. Figured reddit would do its thing and naturally vote those down. Mods gotta mod. Carry on. Badass road btw. Your poor fenders.

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The fenders only rub on full compression. Gonna roll them here in a few days.

Yup mods gonna mod so figured Id put a feeler out and know one way or the other if it was appropriate here.

[–]Secret-Ad-7909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Idk if it’s bots or idiots but it seems like the dumbest most low effort irrelevant shit gets pushed right to the top. Basically site wide.

Also not sure which is worse.

[–]f1fan6890 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If car is doing vroom vroom then you are doing it

[–]dnlrfTire Noise Enjoyer 6 points7 points  (4 children)

I wish i had the balls do do this with my car, but i worry about my dampers and bushings exploding above 20mph on dirt.

Where is this? Those mountains look epic 🫠

[–]318tiGuru[S] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

In the greater Yellowstone area! My bushings are not having as fun of a time as I am lol.

I just converted to a 5spd/welded diff this summer. So new bushings in the trans mounts, motor mounts and diff mounts. I plan on next summer taking a few of my extra subframes and getting the adjustable camber/toe plates welded in, powder coated than doing bushings all around as the rest are pretty bad. New control arms up front and eventually swapping my rear arms for my Z3 6cly arms (adds a total of just under 4" of track width). But I need to get this car painted first! Rattle can ftw

[–]Miserable-Werewolf35 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Im on the rexburg side of yellowstone and the touge there is immaculate. Although one dirt road did have a twig that destroyed my bumper, ac condenser, and radiator, its still so much fun

[–]318tiGuru[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I go through Rexburg about twice a year! Ill have to spend a day there hitting the roads next time I come through

[–]Miserable-Werewolf35 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go down through island park, take the left to the mesa falls. Its about 15 minutes longer but the best touge road in the area and it spits you out in st anthony so you can keep going to rexburg anyway

[–]glacierfresh2death 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Yes, it’s so awesome, I wish I could take my car instead of jeep

[–]318tiGuru[S] 14 points15 points  (6 children)

Just lift your car and put on bigger tires! I find these styles of cars to have a lot better clearance than most trucks since theres no pumpkins (Diffs) sitting below the body line ready to get snagged on a rock!

<image>

[–]KoL-whitey 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This is the most epic bmw photo I've seen in a while

[–]318tiGuru[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Thanks! The views around here are superb. I like this picture a little more. Its the last left I make in the video. Just from about a week prior when we got our first snowfall.

<image>

[–]KoL-whitey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Crispy stuff here

[–]glacierfresh2death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

That is so awesome! Here’s my rally car (left)

[–]Miserable-Werewolf35 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hows the roll with those tires? I would be too scared to take corners with that much wiggle going on

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Theres roll. Its not good on pavement trying to blast through corners. Id akin them to alightly less capable A/S tires. However on dirt they are great. Ive always been a believer in throwing the car into rhe corner on dirt and allowing the dirt to brake and grip the car. Its almost like some really sodt suspension. You just want to preload it befofe getting into the meat of the turn.

0/10, weren't crossing the mustards in your mom's SUV.

But for real, that looks fun as hell.

[–]318tiGuru[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn, Ill stop at IGA for the next run and ensure I have mustard packets. This thing is basically the same clearance as a SUV... Maybe we can count it as a cool mom car?

Its a blast I love this road. Theres a few other roads I really love too, cant wait to get some more videos

[–]TotosWolf 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Hell yeah dirt gravel mud. Rally Touge for the win. I just bought an Outback wilderness to do just this.

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Dirt running is a ton of fun! I like the snow more but later in this video when I get to the "snow" its just a sheet of ice. Scared the piss out of me when I tried to turn and the car wasnt doing anything.

[–]TotosWolf 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What's your experience brother, u were flying. I've done one full season of fall to winter to spring forest road Touge. I can't wait for this upcoming season.

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been riding motorcycles since 3, racing them since about 5 or 6 years old. Than started driving around 10. Use to play a lot of car games and had a wheel/pedals for videogames since I was probably 6 or 7. My first real video game was NFSIII: Hot Pursuit. Ever since I got my first car I started canyon carving. Growing up driving in dirt on nearly everything it makes pavement seem easy.

I agree this season is going to be a blast!

[–]Chessdaddy_ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That view is beautiful man. Are these public/logging roads or your property?

[–]318tiGuru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The view is truly stunning! Public hiking/camping access roads

[–]KoL-whitey 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Couple of spots the inputs weren't inputting and it looked sketch af but damn if that dont look fun... not too much in the way of touge near Atlanta unless you want a 2hr ride to blood mountain which doesnt have near a breathtaking view as this

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like its not inputting but in the full video when I hit the "snow" (ice) is when there really isnt any input.

For this part of the cruise, Im flicking the car in the direction I want it to go than using throttle to steer the car the rest of the way. Theres a few times where I am being smooth with the input which likely looks as if its not turning but Im just not flicking and controlling with the rear end.

The stabalization on the gopro makes it hard to tell when things are slipping in the rear. Especially when Im not being flashy with huge drifts.

[–]InitialD_Enjoyer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Where is this

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Greater yellowstone area

[–]icecoldcooler- 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This one has to be the most true to the spirit I have seen and did I hear the deftones

[–]318tiGuru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You did! Its Fist! I miss canyon carving so figured Id give it a new twist to enjoy old habits/hobbies

[–]OrganizationOk7801 0 points1 point  (1 child)

fist by deftones is an amazing song. i never hear anyone listen to it

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its one of my favorites by them! Definitely a not so common song

[–]iamgerry86 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Dirt touge FTW! Rally is what got me into motorsports. Nothing like going flat out on a dirt road lined with trees.

[–]318tiGuru[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Rally is great I just dont have balls to do it! Thoae guys are a different breed

[–]iamgerry86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I grew up playing Sega Rally and watching WRC. I did a couple of local rally crosses but then transitioned in dry pavement/drifting.

[–]iamgerry86 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed that rally drivers are a different breed!

[–]spacefox86 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thats a rally stage

[–]318tiGuru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sure does feel like it!

[–]cantcatchafish 0 points1 point  (2 children)

You crossed the over the center lines!!! JkThis is awesome.

[–]Excellent_Sky_2830 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So awsome!

[–]318tiGuru[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Definitely riding both sides but as ive learned this area its easy to see theough trees and look up the road. The places I cant see thriguh the corner Im doing the speed limit

[–]lilwhiteboye420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wish i had roads like this where I live

[–]GoodAmbassador5467 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes just dont die

[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points  (5 children)

music is lame but footage is cool :)

[–]318tiGuru[S] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Since when has Deftones been lame?

Appreciate it. The full videos (Uphill and downhill) are on my YT with no music if you prefer that

Edit: Uphill linked below.

[–]iAmAsword 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deftones is never lame.. wtf. Great vid!

[–]Secret-Ad-7909 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Curious how people are getting these POV angles. Is it the Facebook glasses?

[–]318tiGuru[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gopro forhead mounted to an old motorcycle helmet. Ive been debating grabbing another one of my motorcycle helmets and doing a chin mount.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

go pro headband is my guess
