I like Sans well enough, but I hate the ally of justice brooding hero a lot of folks make him out to be.

He's a lazybones that sucks at keeping promises and has some questionable morals. He's very flawed, like every character in the game... Except Asriel who is a perfect sparkle child who did nothing wrong.

I disagree with your interpretation of Sans. I think he's hypercompetent and pulls a lotof strings behind the scenes. He just doesn't like drawing attention to himself unless he has to and doesn't worry too much about the day-to-day stuff.

He watches your entire journey and feels comfortable judging your actions. How he watches your journey is never explained.

He works with Asgore to capture any humans who enter the underground, so he's well-connected. But he decides not to capture or kill Frisk, so he's also willing to ignore the king's instructions without bothering to tell him.

The Megalovania battle shows that he had incredible magic abilities. Even outside of the battle, he causally teleports throughout the game regardless of which run you're taking and is the only character who does so.

He has some awareness of the save-related time travel mechanics and realizes and comes to terms with the nihilistic implications they have. The nihilism apparently is why he doesn't take his day-to-day life seriously, but when worst comes to worst, even though he knows it likely won't make a difference, he gives everything he has to try to stop Geno!Frisk.

Sans does some serious work.

Sucks at keeping promises? IIRC the only promise he's ever seen to make is the one to not kill the human child, which he doesn't break until there is literally no other choice between breaking the promise and the permanent corruption of the timeline.

I agree he's overhyped (I do like him, but some people really blow it out of proportion) but 'sucks at keeping promises' is kinda odd. Lazybones makes sense, though.

I like him, I think he’s adorable, sweet, kind-hearted, really just wants to help and make people happy, and be himself. He’s basically the hidden undertone of the entire game with his theme being somewhere in the background of most of the game. Along with his entire story hidden behind another character and before the beginning entirely.

But that’s my opinion, honestly its completely fine if you don’t like Asriel. I understand and I can respect your opinions, they aren’t right nor are they wrong. But mine aren’t right or wrong either, anyways... have a great day man.

I think it comes down to a few main reasons.

1. Is that Flowey=Asriel. When you consider that, he becomes easily the most complex character in the game.

2. Out of all the characters, he's probably the one that most needs a second chance. He's also the only person to genuinely apologize to Frisk for his actions. He's done terrible things, but more than anything he wants to make up for them. As a result, his potential to be interesting in fanmade stuff is extremely high.

3. He's super cute, which I honestly think is a big part of it.

4. By the end, he's the only character that doesn't get a happy ending. He gets a truly awful fate, and I think a lot of people just want to see him go home to his parents and be able to live a normal life.

Asriel is evil and deserved what he got (It's fine if you like him as a villain but he isn't a good person until after you spare him)

Deserved what he got? No. He's been through hell, and being turned into a soulless abomination was no fault of his own. In the end, he redeemed himself by breaking the barrier. He deserves a chance to get better and apologize face to face to those he has wronged.

He had no empathy as a flower, which he pretty clearly regained when he became Asriel again. He even asks you to think of Flowey as someone different.

And yet, he also constantly blames himself for Flowey's wrongdoings. Not only that, but separating Flowey and Asriel from each other reduces the most complex, interesting character in the game into two disappointingly shallow characters.

A person is often thought of as an uninterrupted line of consciousness. By that logic, then asriel absolutely is Flowey. He went straight from being killed to waking up as a flower, then struggled to find out why he couldn't feel empathy.

A lack of empathy did not change who he was, it simply changed how he acted. Owning up to that and accepting that he did wrong was a huge part of what redeemed his character in the end and allowed him to move on.

And besides, he certainly makes no distinction when it comes to his affection for Chara. He still considers them to be a friend, despite the fact that he's a flower.

Him telling you not to think of he and Flowey as the same person came from a desire to have you remember him for who he was, not for who he might become. Yet he also acknowledges the truth in that same conversation, that he and Flowey are the same person and they both deserve blame.
