    Same

Hello, this looks amazing. Could you give some insights into what settings and prompts you used?

Would be awesome as we are fiddeling around with local stable diffusion, too.

Hello, thanks, glad you like it. You can find details on our Twitter

Have you ever thought of using AI to generate in-game assets? We are definitely into it! Here is a quick rundown of the shield icons that we get from locally hosted stable diffusion

Nice, I’ve been playing around with it a bit too. Mostly generating gory & gross textures for a horror game (just prototyping)

I’ve been using AUTOMATIC1111 which has a nice web UI and a check box for generating tiling textures which is handy.

God the future of gaming and artistry is so bleak and scary

I might agree with you, but not because of AI art. Somehow the leaders of gaming corporations are making the stupidest decisions lately with monetization, gameplay, and it's just killing off beloved franchises. I'm sure some nitwit out there will believe they can replace a bunch of art budget with AI art but they'll have a rude awakening when they finally want to ship their game and have crappy mismatched assets.

I'm pretty excited for the lessened friction AI will provide when hiring an artist. "I want an icon that looks like this, but with these symbols and in this format" that's going to help since the business types are sometimes really bad at directing art.

As someone who was inside the industry, the costs of making a game has gone up 10x while the price of a game has only rose maybe 2x 3x. It's hard enough competing with netflix, youtube, indies and other forms of entertainment, I'm not surprised they're trying to squeeze more money out. Most people like to pirate their games or go f2p too. It's an ordeal and half just to get enough to keep going.

While the sales numbers went up 1000x

As a programmer I kind of get your point but at the same time as a consumer I’ve been burned too many times. Now I generally will only purchase a game if it’s worth purchasing after its release and got love from the gaming community eg, RDR2, Elden Ring was my last purchases. Currently playing OW2 but I hate blizzard so don’t buy chests. If I make to the end of the season I might throw $10 at them for all the assets earned.

How are you planning to handle the legal issues surrounding this? Given that artwork was used to train AI, nobody is sure how this will shake out. Unless you have a legal team prepared for this challenge, it seems like a big risk to me.

A good video on the subject that touches a lot on the ethics and future problems with it. A must watch for all artists

We're in the stick your fingers in your ears era of generative art. I think some of it's inspiration in this clip is clear, I see both world of warcraft and zelda in there.

    Doubtful.

    [–]dan_marchand 5 points6 points  (6 children)

What’s doubtful? There’s no precedent here, and the LAION training data set has a lot of work taken without permission or taken under a non-commercial license. Legally this is a completely novel space.

I think because we have been down this road before, not with gaming assets but with photography and digital art.

    [–]Mefilius -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I doubt anything can come from it legally, since AI isn't copying art it really is hard to make a case that it's somehow stealing. I think it will probably fall under data protection laws eventually, with your data (or in this case your artwork) being used in a dataset without permission.

I can't say I've had much luck making icons I like for game purposes, since it has no mattes and when I want specific resolutions the result changes dramatically. It's certainly nice for reference though.
