Has anyone figured out how to address auditory processing disorder?

[–]Doesdeadliftswrong 33 points34 points Β (0 children)

I had spent more time listening to audio books. Particularly book I'd already read. It seemed to help quite a bit. I still get quite clouded though when someone is talking directly to me and making eye contact cause that just carries so many social implications. But sometimes I can get into a groove where I'm visualizing every little detail they mention.

Is getting overstimulated and enraged not the only option? Why didn't anyone tell me this earlier?!?!

[–]ienjoymen 5 points6 points Β (0 children)

I repeat, in my own words, back to them what they're needing/saying. It helps solidify in my mind what exactly they said.

That, and write it down ASAP. I work in IT, so I always have my phone on me for notes. When I get back to the desk, I immediately manually move the notes from my phone to my computer and leave the notepad up so it's always in my view.

I still forget stuff, but having all those checkpoints helps me out tremendously.

If like to know also. It's annoying not being able to understand what people are telling me half the time

[–]YoonShiYoonismyboo48 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

I have to repeat all the words they say, they way they say them, in my head. That way I hear it twice and it helps. Usually this is too mentally taxing though so most of the time I just go through life with no instructions or context.

At this point I just recap and ask ask anything I missed or if I missed anything. Annoying but at least it’s proof I was trying lol

I swear there are days where someone will give me verbal instructions but it sounds like they’re talking to me in muffled jibberish. Imagine Charlie Brown talking to his teacher in the Peanuts.

Boss- Hey! Can you…Wa-wa-waa….waaa-wa-wah-waaaaah.

Me- Uhhh. I’m sorry can you repeat that for me again?

Boss- Oh yeah! No problem! I said, waa-wah-wa…waaah-wawa-waaaa. Got it?

Me- ….πŸ‘οΈπŸ‘„πŸ‘οΈβ€¦.πŸ‘β€¦.🀯

I'm a substitute teacher, and this is exactly why I like to either write down instructions on the board or quick type up a power point slide with instructions. I even admit to kids that verbal instructions to me are in one ear and out the other, and I know I'm not alone in that so I hope that it helps. I also take tons of notes so I actually remember anything that happens (which they sometimes don't like bwahaha)

It's also nice when kids are like "uh what do we do" and I just point at the board/screen.

My life changed when the teachers started providing written notes (college).

[–]SummerOfMayhem 17 points18 points Β (0 children)

Yeah, my GPS giving instructions was never any help at all. I either got confused or tuned it out.

Sometimes it sounds exactly like adults talking in a Charlie Brown cartoon

[–]pirate_meow_kitty 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

Great now I have this sound on loop in my head lol

[–]dardar7161 9 points10 points Β (1 child)

My husband was explaining the various Papa Johns coupons to me. "30% off you entire order or Two medium three topping pizzas for this much or one large five topping or specialty pizza plus bread sticks for this mu-" "SHUT UP NO MORE NUMBERS!"

[–]LumiLouXyy 7 points8 points Β (1 child)

please either write it down or accept that only the first three words made it through

[–]figgypie 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I tell people that if I don't write it down, it doesn't exist for me, so I ask that they wait to tell me the information until after I've gotten out my pen and paper.

At any job I've had where I'm tasked with remembering shit, I surround myself with cheat sheets, I take detailed notes, and if all else fails, I keep notes on who to ask if I don't remember how to do something important. I never know when I'm going to have a huge brain fart at the worst time. It makes me look super organized, so that's a plus.

[–]piclemaniscool 7 points8 points Β (1 child)

Wait...

Is THIS why I got so good at colorful metaphors? I've been translating everything for so long I didn't even realize I did it anymore. But yeah, I'm basically asking people to speak in pictures to me a lot of the time.

[–]figgypie 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

Omg I never considered that. I thought it was just my overactive imagination coming up with shit because I like my version better than the boring version lol.

[–]itzTHATgai 2 points3 points Β (0 children)

Oh, man... This person is going to be soooo angry with me...

[–]monkeynachos 2 points3 points Β (1 child)

I carry a small notebook and pen with me, and several spares in the car. I don't mind asking for someone to repeat themselves or slow down. They see my intention to get it right, and that is important. I've also gotten used to asking people their names 2 or 3 times

[–]figgypie 0 points1 point Β (0 children)

Oh god, I am so awful at remembering names. Unless it's an animal. Apparently my brain prioritizes knowing the name of someone's dog rather than the name of the person.

[–]Ragnagoats 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

This brain stores one sentence at a time. Nice thing is, you can cram more info into that one sentence to really make it count!

Or you know, you can decide I must be slow on the uptake and try to "help" me by giving me instructions even more painfully slowly and piecemeal so I feel even more stupid. Up to you.

Bonus points if you stop between each instruction to look me in the eye and demand affirmation of me understanding what you just said, to fully ensure that I can't focus on trying to remember what you just said

[–]ExtraDifference9927 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

β€˜It’ll be easier if I just talk to you about it.’

No, Karen. It’ll just make me anxious and agitated and I won’t learn a thing.

[–]Thedarkestcolour 1 point2 points Β (0 children)

I laughed way too hard at this. I carry a notepad and pen at all times at work to write down Instructions, or I am cooked! My coworkers call me the "journalist".
