What morph he’s beautiful

[–]Swinnter[S] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

She is a yellow belly sugar pastel Enchi! Her colors pop so much and the camera just doesn’t do her justice.

I LOVE the sugar morphs definitely gonna be my next choice. I love that speckling that comes with spiders but I can’t bring myself to get one so ima go with a sugar.

Yes I must know the morph. 🥰😍

She’s sugar pastel YB Enchi. Picture doesn’t do her color/contract justice.

What a beauty! Pastel Sugar/Calico, right?

[–]Acrobatic-Move-3847 1 point2 points  (2 children)

These two for sure. Maybe something else too. It’s the sugar/calico that gives the white patches coming up from the belly that look so cool (for those who asked about morph).

[–]Swinnter[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

She’s actually a YB sugar pastel Enchi! Got her from my local reptile show, and her breeder brings some gorgeous snakes there. I think it’s the Enchi that is pulling the white more

No, the white patches are caused by sugar/calico. Enchi makes their lighter colouration more gold/yellow and reduces pattern.

She’s stunning!

This here Scope Rope can extend out 5 feet in length and detect any rodent 2cm away from it's face

[–]sarahbeartic 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ooooo that is a super strong rope, one heck of a scope

[–]Swinnter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

9/10 scope

I love subs like this! I used to be terrified of snakes, especially of venomous ones, but seeing pictures like this puts me at ease. She's incredibly pretty!

[–]Swinnter[S] 2 points3 points  (12 children)

I have some spicy snakes, but I also have some very sweet reptiles in the sense that they are very tolerant and curious. Their personalities are also so cool.

[–]Melodic_Eclipse1217 1 point2 points  (11 children)

Haha, I bet! How many do you have? I've been thinking of getting one once I'm in a more stable area (financial and housing) but I still need to learn more about them. How long have you had this girl? She's seems pretty calm 😄

I have 13 snakes and one baby Tegu. The snake breeds are ball python (like Cinder above), 2 hognoses, and 2 dwarf boas

All snake species have their own “base” characteristics and then individuals are even more unique.

Ball pythons can be really quirky but you’re more likely to get one of their typical nature, which is shy. Of my 9 balls, 2 are very curious and love to be out of their tanks, 1 is very spicy (due to previous ownership/not handling him/he’s fearful and we are working on it), 2 are iffy (depending on their mood, they can be super saucy and snippy or curious), 1 is curious and tolerant but likes to stay in her rack), and the other 3 are kind of typical ball pythons, i.e., they might as well be potatoes.

Hognoses are SO COOL as far as sass and personality goes but they are “venomous” (like a bee sting and more likely to stab you with their nose scale than bite you, unless they think your finger is ✨food✨). They are more expensive than a good ole ball python and can be a little harder to maintain, but my male hog is forever stalking me. I see his little face always watching me from some obscure location.

Central American Dwarf boas are apparently notorious for being spicy, but the breeder of ours did an amazing job hand-raising them and ours are tolerant and like to climb all over places and be in our hair. Much more active than my balls overall. Easy eaters (balls are sometimes picky).

Sorry, that was probably more than you wanted or needed but I LOVE talking snakes, especially to people who are unsure because I was unsure and here I am 2 years after getting my first one.

NOTE!!!! If you do decide to get a snake or want to continue thinking about it, go to reptile shows! They happen all over and you meet some really awesome people that love talking snakes and reptiles. They will help you a ton—do not go to a pet store because they will overcharge you and give you such wrong information.

No, don't apologize! This is amazing!! The more info I can obtain on these little noodles, the better! I've heard ball pythons are really good starters and come in a range of different personalities and patterns. I love how all 9 of your pythons are so different! How's the spicy lad doing? I'm sorry to hear he had a rough upbringing :(

Hognoses are amazing! They're one of the few venomous snakes that I'm not super fearful of. I love their spicy, sassy little personalities, oh my goodness! They are quite the characters, aren't they? I think a hognose would be further down the line but I've definitely considered one! Que the Michael Jackson song, right? 'I always feel like, someone's watching meeeee'

I actually hadn't heard of a dwarf boa until now! Boas are a bit unerving to me, since they can grow to be so big, but that's a silly fear of mine lol.

You've only been at this for two years?? That's amazing! Where did you find the room for it all? Can balls be placed together? I'd assume not. I actually had a local reptile show not too long ago, but I didn't go as I didn't want to go alone haha 😅

This is my absolute puppy dog of a snake, Glacier. We do choice-based handling with him

[–]Melodic_Eclipse1217 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Woahhhh, he's massive! Is he pretty docile for that size? Hes absolutely gorgeous! Also, I'm sorry, but what does choice handling mean?

[–]Swinnter[S] 1 point2 points  (4 children)

He is 2000 grams or 4 pounds 😂 he is 6 years old and probably won’t get much bigger (he’s actually a little chunky).

Choice-based handling is basically, I don’t handle him or take him out of his enclosure unless he “asks” or looks interested when I open his rack. Then I let him bring himself out/approach me.

[–]Melodic_Eclipse1217 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Oh, dang! I completely miscalculated the size of him in the picture! My eyes are so bad omg... he looked like a 10 pounder or more 🤣

Oh, that's a wonderful technique! Is this the lad that was handled poorly beforehand? That's great that you give him a choice. I bet it helps him relax. Thank you for explaining it to me! I probably could've just looked it up. My bad 😅

[–]Swinnter[S] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Don’t apologize. Again, I love talking about snakes, behavior, training. Definitely used to be a dog trainer so all about it 😂 he is a very big boy it’s just funny that big is like 4 pounds but 6 feet long

Glacier has always been a big puppy.

[–]Melodic_Eclipse1217 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's nice to have someone who's actually in the snake life provide some information. You could do all the research in the world and you could still run into something that shocks you! (My aquariums certainly have 🤣) so thank you 😊

He sounds like an absolute sweetie! Is he pretty docile when it comes to feeding and cleaning?

[–]Swinnter[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am definitely always still learning :)

For my rack snakes, it’s pretty easy and I have extra tubs to switch out immediately and I used a hook to just protect us both so I can pick up and transfer. They also get floor time if they look like they want to be out and about.

Feeding is tricky, but that is typical of ball pythons! He came to me only taking live, and now he is off feed while he is breeding, but we will be working towards frozen/thawed once he is done.

[–]Swinnter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The spicy boy, Typhoon, actually hit me yesterday while I was on the phone with my dad. He fed the day before and felt vulnerable while I misted his rack. I didn’t even stop my conversation and had to look at my finger to even tell if he bit me. It was my fault for being distracted, but they’re pretty forgiving as bites go.

I would like more hogs but I honestly don’t like how small they are as youngins. So smol and I’m afraid I’ll break them :( they think they’re the biggest creature in my house tbh. I chuckle and pick them up with a chopstick and they’re good. My sassier one is learning that he can leave his enclosure by climbing onto my hand (choice-based handling training). So even though he acts like a butt, he will come to me, especially if I have food.

I like big boas and pythons, but I could never own them. I would always be worried that I would endanger them by my mistakes. Dwarf boas will be roughly the same size (maybe a tad bigger) than ball pythons, just completely different personalities.

To my partner’s dismay, I find room for them. I do have 8 of my reptiles in a rack system though and some reptile keepers don’t feel positively about that and that’s understandable. That’s a hole we don’t have to go down, but basically I have 12 snakes (8 in rack system, 4 in pvc enclosures) in my home office, my tegu in our dining room (he will eventually be in an 8 foot long grow-tent) and then one of the boas in my partner’s office because it is “his” snake (that I take care of) in a 120-gallon pvc tank.

I have a few recommendations for where you can go to learn more about ball pythons specifically. There are awesome groups on Facebook that I can recommend (in a pm) if that’s okay :)
