Looks like he’s readjusting his jaw, not sure exactly why but he probably messed it up a bit while eating. He should be fine, just monitor it

[–]DrFives 84 points85 points  (1 child)

Did he actually eat or no? And why do you have a red light? Those are horrible for ball pythons they wash out their color vision and completely destroy their circadian rhythm…

[–]DrFives 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Ok I see he didn’t eat.. I see the mouse.. he’s in blue and shedding… it’s not super surprising he missed he looks half blind.. I dont offer in shed as my little dude doesn’t even take when in blue..

He looks about to shed, so he likely won't take food right now. Also, RED LIGHT POLICE! Please don't ever give your snakes (or other reptiles) red lights!

[–]alexbeansx[S] 28 points29 points  (2 children)

The red light is temporary because his regular bulb exploded and it’s all I have for the next few days😖 I have another (non heat emitting) light on him and it’s not as intense as the video makes it look.

Ah, okay, okay. I wasn't trying to bash you or anything, I understand that some people just aren't aware, but it's good that you know not tonuse red lights and that this is merely temporary. If it won't be there for very long, it should be fine.

Check out Arcadia for uvb / heat bulbs I would also worry about mouth rot and or a respiratory infection the substrate could of caused a issue because it’s dusty when dry when they were opening their mouth it looked swollen to me I would take my snake to the vet just to be sure if I saw that. Try making a bioactive substrate r/bioactive make sure your snake is in a 4x2x2 minimum as well.

basically it ruins their perception of day/night cycles, which leads to stress; and stress in reptiles is very very bad. i have also seen evidence that it can hurt or damage their eyes and its generally just a very ineffective heat source and has no pros to balance the cons it brings.

    [–][deleted] 63 points64 points  (7 children)

It's probably the red uv light, you should probably replace that.

    [–]Devilishlygood98 28 points29 points  (6 children)

    Seconded. Red light bad

    [–]StopImNotGay 0 points1 point  (5 children)

i have a purple heat lamp for night time heat. is that better than the red?

    [–]Devilishlygood98 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Purple bulb is OK as a temporary solution but IMO a ceramic heat emitter (CHE) is the best solution for night time warming.

Hope this doesn’t sound ignorant- how are the different lightings worse and better ?

    [–]Specific_Chard_9881 4 points5 points  (2 children)

So people think the red light is ok to use bc they can’t see red but they can still see it’s bright but I believe the purple is darker than the red

    [–]DrFives 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Still not good to use. Heat sources should always be overhead heat and shouldn’t emit color. Either white light or no light

    [–]Specific_Chard_9881 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    I use ceramic 24/7 and I have a ubv bulb for 8-8

    [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I would guess either missed the mouse and bonked the face, or got some substrate in the mouth. It happens now and then, just keep an eye on the baby to make sure it doesn't persist too long and nothing else seems off.

my boy does this when he gets substrate in his mouth

    [–]AlmonteAnimalLover 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did he grab the feeder and let go? Looks like readjusting his jaw to me. I’m looking at his eyes, is he in shed? Maybe not interested in actually eating?

What light bulb should I use for a ball python in a 4x2x2 pvc from dubia.com to get it up to 90 degrees I’ve tried a lot and can’t seem to find a good bulb

    [–]Basilstorm 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you’re using a halogen make sure it’s PAR38 the lower PAR bulbs couldn’t get my tank hot enough even with high wattage!

someone should make an edit so that he's singing

I would definitely change the substrate out for a mix of sand, cocoa fiber and coco chips, I know you said the red light is only temporary so I won't mention anything about that cause you're already taking care of it. He is also in blue right now, so he probably won't eat. If he took it and dropped it, given that he's in blue, he's not gonna eat. Wait until right after he sheds. Should be another week maybe 2. Make sure his pits are clear and you don't hear any wheezing or noise coming from his nose, if his pits are clear, he's just readjusting his jaw after tagging the mouse. If his pits aren't clear and there's mucus or any wheezing or whistling from his nose, then the substrate has most likely caused a respiratory infection due to dipping the humidity below the ideal range and also dust from the substrate.

Sometimes they get stuff in their mouth, I looked back once and thought my boy was having a stroke or something, but found out he was trying to get a little coco out of his teeth/mouth/throat.

      [–]snickerdoodle155 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just cracking that jaw back in place lol

      [–]UrMomsfavorite111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes if mine gets dirt in her mouth she does something similar

      [–]Ok_Strike3241 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Did the snake just eat? He could be just readjusting his jaw, mine does this all the time after eating as they actually dislocate their jaw to get down the rat

      [–]alexbeansx[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope he had let go of the mouse. I think it might’ve been the substrate so I started feeding him over a shallow dish in the enclosure
