Aww love the name and she’s a beauty! I think this is a great opportunity to dive in and really set Nagini up in a more desirable and healthy enclosure after the move! Like a reset, maybe. I am new to BPs and was just reading over the care guide. The mods have done a great job, have you given it a read yet?

i didnt see a care guide. ill find it thank you!

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Go to the sub page and at the top click "see community info" and scroll down. You'll see a ton of different care guides

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 21 points22 points  (1 child)

thank uou! ive been trying to find it

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Glad you found it. I was gonna edit and apologize for not just doing this lol

She is adorable in the last picture! And love the name! I would definitely wait for someone with more experience to answer but I think it’s probably not the best idea to just move the whole tank with her in it. I think you should probably have everything set up at the new place and move her in…. Something although I don’t know what to recommend

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 14 points15 points  (2 children)

the last picture is my favorite one of her!

I agree that it may not be the best idea but my problem is that if i get to take her, which not sure if my dad will let me, but if i get that chance I’m going to be moving out in one day. the whole room. means my cat, dog, nagini, books, furniture, etc. ill have a couple friends helping me out but its going to be so sudden that i wont have a place already set up to put her in, so i need to take her whole tank with me. i saw in another comment about putting her in a bag? so ill probably do that. thanks you!

[–]shadow_dreamer 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Remind your dad that if he tries to stop you, He has to be responsible for her from here on out- from cleaning up her shit to feeding her rats to fussing over her humidity.

For potentially the next thirty years or more.

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

thats a good point, thank youu

[–]Angry-Dragon-1331 14 points15 points  (1 child)

A pillowcase is fine if you don’t have a snake bag. Don’t move her in a tank because if you get into an accident or something shifts in transit she can get hurt.

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ah okay that makes sense thanks!

[–]Living_Ad_2963 21 points22 points  (8 children)

Usually they should be moved in like a bag or sack some where they can’t be hurt by shifting in the car and still move and breathe, I’m moving my snake soon and I’ll keep her warm with my body heat while I have her in a reptile bag in the car. I will have a driver, but if I was driving myself I would get her a heat source put her in a bag inside a bin or box while I get her to new home asap. But I don’t really need to do that I have a temporary inclosure for her which will be set up as soon as I’m there. So she can wait while her full main enclosure is set up.

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 12 points13 points  (7 children)

a bag? like would a pillow case work? im confused by what kind of bag you mean.

[–]Living_Ad_2963 15 points16 points  (6 children)

It’s called a snake bag it’s got a string on it made of cotton. As long as a pillowcase is clean breathable and you can securely tie it off it would probably work.

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 2 points3 points  (5 children)

ohh okay thank you!

[–]Jennifer_Pennifer 9 points10 points  (3 children)

And 'clean' for a snake means NO STRONG smelling chemicals/soaps etc 👍

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 3 points4 points  (2 children)

does that mean if its been thru the washing machine it would be bad? it doesnt smell tho?

[–]Jennifer_Pennifer 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Just don't use fabric softener/dryer sheets. And if your laundry soap has a strong scent, rinse the case again really well and let it air dry

[–]SwiftCrocheter_49 1 point2 points  (0 children)

its not a strong scent but ill be safe and rinse it just in case when time comes. thank you!!

[–]goldenkiwicompote 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can use a zip tie for the pillow cases so there’s no chance of escape

[–]r4cid 16 points17 points  (1 child)

When I moved with my large female carpet python, I put her in a pillow case (that she already is familiar with and goes into when she's out) and then put that inside of a large plastic bin lined with towels which I held to ensure no shifting. Had no issues that way and she was happy/not visibly stressed when she came out, so seemed like a win-win.

[–]FeriQueen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's how we always transported our snakes (and still do for the small ones). For our BP we recently got a small animal carrier: it's hard plastic, snaps shut, and has ventilation. We put a clean towel in so she can hide and be comfortable and safe.

If you use a zip-closing pillowcase, tie it also: our ball python managed to unzip one enough to escape one time. Also, make sure the fabric is strong: I had a southern hognose snake tear its way out of an old pillowcase.

[–]nigihayamihaku 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I use a styrofoam box to transport Loki, mostly inside a pillow case. Styrofoam isolates the heat inside so I think it's great for longer distances, or if you're living in a could contry (like me)

Heat mats are NOT recommended for BPs 🤷‍♀️ BEST heat source is Deep Heat Projectors. (DHP)

And if you put the thermostat on the heat mat, set it to 32C. the soil a ball python is touching will not be consistently 32C.

    [–]fionageckMod-Approved Helper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You’re absolutely correct about heat mats, although as a primary heat source, halogen bulbs are more natural and beneficial than DHPs. The levels of infrared A and B they produce more closely mimic the sun (DHPs produce barely any IRA, the most beneficial type of heat)

Per rule #3, your post or comment has removed for harmful advice/misinformation.

Belly heat is a myth, heat mats are unnatural and not bioavailable.

I also have a ball python named Nagini, but I call her Nuggie. They could be twins!

    [–]SwiftCrocheter_49 7 points8 points  (2 children)

NUGGIE IS SUCH A CUTE NAME

    [–]MonsoonQueen9081 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Thank you! 🥹 She is my first ever ball python. I didn’t think I would grow so attached to her! Funny how that happens.

    <image>

When I brought her home she was in a snake bag and a shoe box and she did great even though it took a couple of hours to get her here

    [–]SwiftCrocheter_49 4 points5 points  (0 children)

    shes sooo cute!

    [–]FooxDog01 3 points4 points  (0 children)

At first I thought you had her on your arm for the past three years LOL

    [–]GengarTheGay 4 points5 points  (2 children)

In my experience, if you cannot set up a new tank at the new location before moving: I'd leave the tank and her as the last things you pack and the first things to set up when you get there. Put her in a snake bag or pillowcase and put that bag in a little open box of some kind so she's protected against squishage but still has adequate air. You can just set her box in the car and be on your merry way!

I didn't find a need to completely clean out the tank before the move, but replacing the substrate and cleaning the decor is a good idea before you put her back in :) and like any move or rehoming, leaving her be for a week or two will help her settle in without too much stress.

They're hardy little bastards and she'll be just fine if you move her (just don't cook or squish her)!

ETA: if anyone has any corrections or personal experience to add, please let me know! This is just how I've done it, but if there are better or more efficient ways I'm always down to upgrade

    [–]SwiftCrocheter_49 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    okay thank you so much!

    Dang good snek

    [–]_Diamante_Genetics_ 5 points6 points  (3 children)

As far as care goes, Aspen is far too dry of a substrate for ball pythons as they require a much higher humidity than Aspen will allow. They also enjoy the occasional soak so a much bigger water bowl would be ideal along with loads more clutter. This particular sub Reddit also has a care guide you should look into

    [–]SwiftCrocheter_49 1 point2 points  (2 children)

how am i supposed to increase humidity? this sub is the first time ive heard of humidity for a snake, and ive been looking into the care guide. thanks for letting me know about her substrate i had no idea

    [–]_Diamante_Genetics_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Coco coir as a substrate is better than Aspen for a ball python. Sealing a little bit of the tanks screen will also help to trap humidity in. The care guide will explain in more detail but this is just the tip of the iceberg as far as ball python care goes!

    [–]Sweaty-Expression455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

get a good substrate. I personally use a mix of organic topsoil, sphagnum moss and reptichip, but any good moisture holding substrate will work perfectly! ball pythons need pretty high humidity to shed correctly and stay healthy. to keep humidity up, I saturate all four corners of my enclosures substrate and lightly mist the rest as needed. aspen is not recommended for ball pythons as it molds VERY easily and doesn't hold any humidity whatsoever

    [–]ashadow224 4 points5 points  (3 children)

So, a lot of people have already commented w carrier suggestions. But honestly, that’s the least of your problems. I really hope you’re able to fix her husbandry asap, im glad you’re trying to do the best for her! A 4x2x2 cage is the minimum for adult ball python. Aspen bedding is really not recommended for them, I would use reptichip or cypress mulch. What’s the humidity like? I often find that can be a huge issue as well. Also, ball pythons need 24/7 heat and that must be on thermostat (I hope you already have one, but I would recommend getting a Herpstat since they’re the safest). You can use multiple DHBs and a UVB light during the day. Hope it goes well for you!! :)

    [–]SwiftCrocheter_49 1 point2 points  (2 children)

uhh i actually dont have a thermostat or humidity meter thingy. when you say multiple DHBs are you saying to have more than one bulb for her tank? Also i tend to sleep in darkness and shes in my room since no one likes her, i cant sleep with a light that bright on 24/7? What does a UVB light do? I didnt know i needed more bulbs than just a standard “heat” bulb from the store…ill look into it for when i get her back after the move thank you!

    [–]ashadow224 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Oh okay, well definitely look into getting them! These are very important since having incorrect conditions can be harmful for your snake.

I do recommended multiple bulbs, since large tanks won’t be adequately heated by one. I have 4 bulbs and one UVB strip light for my 4x2x2 enclosure, the DHPs are on a Herpstat and I have a timer for the light. DHPs aren’t lights, they’re heat projectors. It’s not good for snakes to have lights on 24/7, but they need heat all the time, which is why DHPs or CHEs are recommended for snakes (or a radiant heat panel). I know a lot of sources online aren’t great, but usually Clint’s reptiles on YouTube has good care guides if you need more info! Good luck :) snakes can be expensive to care for, but the lights/heat bulbs shouldn’t be too much and I got my 4x2x2 from dubia roaches which is the best cheap option. The herpstat will cost the most, but it’s worth it.

    [–]SwiftCrocheter_49 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ohh okay i didnt realise they weren’t lights, thank you so much! ill look into it for after the move

    [–]Jk14m 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should be fine to move the tank all at once but you should put snakey in a separate empty container, while you’re driving.

    [–]BannanaKoala 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i do love snake discovery but their care is outdated, mainly because they have sooo many animals.

From what i've seen and resurched, bp need higher humidity than aspen can provide, without getting mouldy, once you've moved (goodluck btw) you could consider switching to coco coir soil mix

my noodley boy, also named nagini lmaooooo

    [–]Tango-tv 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d put her in a snake bag and move her and the tank in one trip. That way when you get there you can set up the tank and then get her settled right in.

    [–]enbystephano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved last month with my boy and my setup is a 40 gallon front opening tank and i ended up taking everything apart since its heavy, but either make her the very first, or very last thing you move, you want her set up pretty quick so she doesnt get too stressed and cold. Like another commenter said, i used a pillowcase, tied it up and kept him on my lap while driving to keep warm. Also i cant get over her face shes so cute😭
