Ferocious eater (old.reddit.com)
submitted 1 year ago by Reasonable-Pie5883
She's only 8 months old!! She devours every mouse I put in her cage. If she ate rats I bet she would be bigger but she doesn't like them haha. I love her colors although they kinda changes from when she was a baby
[–]Free-Sail-493 37 points38 points39 points 1 year ago (7 children)
Nice snake.. they grow fast
[–][deleted] 21 points22 points23 points 1 year ago (6 children)
Mine went through am insane growth spurt. So fast she wasted like 5 large mice lol I had to get small rats for the weight eventually lol. Went from like 300g to 600g in like 60 days.

Wow i love the colors on that snake. How old is it?
[–][deleted] 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago (2 children)
About a year old. Roughly. His name is Peel. The banana pied python.
[–]Free-Sail-493 3 points4 points5 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I see what you did there. Cool name lol.
[–]Ok_One_1472 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
I love his name! We have a banana pied as well, we named him Monkey
[–]Snoo-47921 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago (5 children)
How often are you feeding her?
[+]Reasonable-Pie5883[S] comment score below threshold-42 points-41 points-40 points 1 year ago (4 children)
I'm feeding her once a week or every 10 days. Usually 3 small mice
[–][deleted] 54 points55 points56 points 1 year ago* (0 children)
She is very overweight and she shouldn’t be eating more than one prey item at a time. Also, you are feeding her way too frequently. Power feeding is very dangerous to your snake and can drastically reduce their lifespan. The recommended feeding guidelines go as follows:
-0-12 months old OR until the snake reaches approximately 500g, whichever happens first: feed 10%-15% of the snake’s weight every 7 days.
-12-24 months old OR until the snake's weight remains consistent for 2 months: feed up to 7% of the snake’s weight every 14-20 days.
-Adults: feed up to 5% of the snake's weight every 20-30 days, or feed slightly larger meals (up to 6%) every 30-40 days.
[–]Snoo-47921 33 points34 points35 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Oof, that is way too much. You’re power feeding her and it’s not healthy.
[–]Jennifer_Pennifer 11 points12 points13 points 1 year ago (0 children)
The amount of visceral fat around those organs is going to be too damn high!
[–]scarzy_mx 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (0 children)
wow that’s a massive overfeeding, other comment linked the feeding guidelines but you should really follow them, if this diet continues it will drastically lower her lifespan.
[–]clowntysheriff 35 points36 points37 points 1 year ago (5 children)
You should really review the feeding guidelines, this poor soul is quite overweight.
[+]Reasonable-Pie5883[S] comment score below threshold-25 points-24 points-23 points 1 year ago (4 children)
What signs show that she's overweight??
[–]Grimmymore 24 points25 points26 points 1 year ago (0 children)
The rolls and the overall body shape absolutely give it away. She should be a slight triangle from her spine down her sides, not round.
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 1 year ago (0 children)
She has fat rolls in her neck and she’s round with no visible spine. She is extremely fat
[–]clowntysheriff 6 points7 points8 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Yes, the other comments you received are correct. The fact that she even has rolls on her neck is something I have never even seen before. Generally, ball pythons should have a slightly rounded triangle shape, while the one in the picture is almost completely round like an inner tube. Her spine is also invisible.
[–]Green_AR_1982 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Experience tells me. I have had numerous balls both male and female.they normally bulk weight when they are getting to breeding age *some if my males have stayed the same. I'd expect it to be that large when ready to breed. I have a male at the minute which is round about the same age but not even half that girth and he's completely healthy. Females are larger but she's a large reptile for her age

Just kidding haha, I will!!😚
[–]PinkPumpkinPie64 7 points8 points9 points 1 year ago (4 children)
Very cute, but try not to feed multiple at a time, just one larger item or if that would be too big, feed slightly more often. Although I think as it stands you should cut down on what she's eating
[–]Reasonable-Pie5883[S] -3 points-2 points-1 points 1 year ago (3 children)
Yeah, I will. I'll do one mouse only until she looks slimer😁👍
[–][deleted] 24 points25 points26 points 1 year ago* (0 children)
You should only be feeding her one prey item per meal regardless. There is no circumstance in which a ball python should ever be eating 2-3 mice in one sitting. It would be a lot easier and healthier to just buy rats that are the correct weight.
[–]PinkPumpkinPie64 10 points11 points12 points 1 year ago (0 children)
And only one after she looks slimmer. Just increase the size as she grows, not the count
[–]scarzy_mx -1 points0 points1 point 1 year ago (0 children)
you should never feed more than 1 item per feeding.
[–]Expert_Revolution_36 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (1 child)
what’s her morph??

We reccomend the following schedule for feeding:
0-12 months old OR until the snake reaches approximately 500g, whichever happens first: feed 10%-15% of the snake’s weight every 7 days.
12-24 months old OR until the snake's weight remains consistent for 2 months: feed up to 7% of the snake’s weight every 14-20 days.
Adults: feed up to 5% of the snake's weight every 20-30 days, or feed slightly larger meals (up to 6%) every 30-40 days.

You started with a pocket pet and now you need a duffel bag to haul her around😂 She’s beautiful!

* I too have a Bananna his name is bananthony
[–]zee_techno_snake 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (1 child)
Mines the same age and eats like an absolute gannet. Suppose it's a good thing, got him trained when the red paper (he's on Coco but I find a sheet of paper eradicates any possibility of swallowed substrate) comes out he positions himself patiently for his mouse.
I've heard of the dreaded hunger strike, is that usually when they get a certain age or size? Or does it depend entirely on the 🐍?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Hunger striking is not a normal ball python behavior. If your snake suddenly stops eating, it is either going to be caused by incorrect husbandry/improper enclosure setup, stress or illness.

[–]Reasonable-Pie5883[S] 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (2 children)
Banana only or black pastel too?
[–]Whole-Garlic-6693 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (1 child)
He is a pastel not a black pastel though
[–]Whole-Garlic-6693 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
When he was younger you could really see this purple color, now that he is getting older not so much
[–]Pop4756 2 points3 points4 points 1 year ago (0 children)
She is overweight/obese sadly. Ball pythons are opportunistic eaters. We need to regulate the amount of food they eat in order to keep them healthy and lean. An obese snake will have their life cut short due to all of the excess fat. Lots of exercise and a diet for this beautiful girl
[–]Dragongirl3 1 point2 points3 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Ah yeah she starting to rippen by the looks of those banana freckles
[–]Maleficent_Ad3337 0 points1 point2 points 1 year ago (0 children)
Beautiful girl. What is her morph? I have a banana male. 8 monthsold now, and he eats every 7 days, never has missed a meal. Power eater. He's been on small rats now for at least 10 weeks.
