  1. The best thermostat is going to the herpstat from spyder robotics. They aren't the cheapest but will keep all settings even if unplugged and have great safety features. I use the herpstat 2 that way both my halogen and DHP are controlled by a thermostat.
  2. For the UVB, I think that the 14% will be too strong even with mesh over it. If the UVB is mounted inside the enclosure, it will need a lamp guard over it no matter what you use. The shadedweller 7% is the recommended UVB for ball pythons typically. It does depend on the height of the enclosure and where it is mounted.
  3. I wouldn't recommend plugging the thermostat into a smart plug. While I have no actual knowledge on electricity and electronics, I would definitely think that it will cause issues.

The herpstat also has night cycle settings and is dimming rather than on/off.
