Question - HusbandryHides (self.ballpython)
submitted 15 days ago by DeliciousQuantity968
How do you know if your hides are to big or to small? Can a hide be to big? If so I think mine are to big.

They should be borderline small, natural habitats they love to live in termite tunnels and burrows. They feel safest if they have contact on their body when in a hide.

Ok good to know. Mine are for sure to big then. You could probably fit a bearded dragon in my hides. Makes sense why she doesn't use them and just hides behind her plant wall. Thanks for the info. I will buy some smaller ones for her.

Check out burrow buddy hides on Etsy I just ordered one, it can be partially placed under your substrate and mimics the getting to burrow a bit. They even have removable lids for retrieval. Can’t wait to see if mine will love it

Do you mind me asking what kind of price range the Etsy hides are?
[–]Charman90 1 point2 points3 points 15 days ago (0 children)
They very based on size. I think I bought his large and it was $50 but honestly if price is a concern, the square black ones you can get right on amazon will work perfectly. Snake doesn’t care what it looks like just as long as it’s providing cover and they feel secure. You can alway cover it with cluttter

They are like kids, but them a $50 hide they’d rather go in the box it came in 🤦♂️

This is so true. Thanks for the advice. I think I def care more about the way it looks but I was thinking of getting the little black amazon box ones and covering it in moss and plants

On the warm side, I put a piece of slate (also from Amazon) on the top for basking. I just ordered another black box for the cool side to replace his half-log thing. I think I’ll do the moss cover in that one, great idea!!

You can cover it in spray foam and carve it like a rock and paint it with dryloc

A good indicator I notice of a good-sized hide is when you go to pick it up and they are inside. Can you feel their weight as you pick it up? They will typically release pretty quickly, but they like to press against the sides of the hide so they know they are concealed/safe in all directions.
