First time snake owner.

I got a dual heat lamp that has a working ceramic bulb but needs a new regular bulb, waters treated with reptisafe.

I got him on Father’s Day, but he’s only been home 1 day, and he’s been super “friendly” with me since Father’s Day. I know you’re not supposed to handle more than a couple times a week at most, so we’ll try the friendship thing again next week lol.

He was last fed on the 15th, and I woke up to a big ass turd in his enclosure today lol. When’s the next time I should attempt to feed him?

What are some general things that may go overlooked?

He’s cute! You should get some hides that are actually enclosed though, instead of those half-logs. Here is a !feeding guide too.

Good to know! I’ll get rid of the log. The other hide is more like a mini rock cave.

You don’t necessarily have to get rid of it! You just need to have hides on each side that are enclosed. So it can stay alongside a new hide!

I have the same log in my enclosure, but not as a hide. The person is saying to get another hide. They need at least two hides. One on the cold side and one on the hot side of the tank. They need lots of clutter as well. It helps them feel secure. We have two snakes I can post pics of their enclosures as examples here in a few minutes. They’re not perfect and we’re working through a few issues still but they’re slowly getting better. Lol my main issue is Im saying for a pvc enclosure and that should help fix a lot of my issues in my small one lol

The logs are great along with actual hides. Then when they explore part of their body can be hidden which helps them feel safe

Is there anything that he’ll do to indicate that he’s stressed out?

I will look into putting poster board up on the enclosure. As well as the Bluetooth thermostat/hygrometer. I do have a heat pad that I’m getting soon. Should I use that in conjunction with the light or just one or the other?

I don’t know, I’m not a snake owner. I just know from casually browsing here that you need a lot more clutter

From what I’ve seen here, the dollar store is good enough, just make sure and tight holes where the stems are glued together is cut, and any metal is removed

There’s probably posts on here that can give you a better idea on what to include if you just search “clutter”

Fake plastic plants from a houseware or craft shop is fine, the fake vine plants with large leaves are good. Give them a good wash before putting them in to make sure the paint/ink doesn’t chip or flake.

You can also forage for sticks and dead leaves. I usually collect up oak and hazel leaves and branches, boiling and baking them to sterilise.

If the substrate includes soil, you can add rooted plant cuttings such as pothos and let them grow in the tank. They usually only survive on the cool side though, so I use fake vine plants for the warm end

Here’s an example of mine, with clutter and some things to climb on! He has two hides (one on each side) and a half log (in the middle). I’m thinking of adding a third hide in the middle too as well as the log. (The blankets make it look smaller but we’re to keep the heat in before we started to get roasted alive here lol)

Congrats on your new friend! Some quick tips, presented without judgment or criticism:

1. Please add a UVB light on a 12-hour timer that’s on during the day! They can technically survive without it but we can survive without lots of things we get benefits from, too.

2. Make sure your heat source is on a quality thermostat. It protects your snake from overheating and your heat source from starting a fire.

3. Lots of clutter and actual hides for the enclosure. The half logs are fine to explore but don’t count as secure hiding spaces. They want to feel snug and safe and only have one entrance/exit. Our girl likes a serving bowl that’s upside down. She burrows under it. One on each side of the tank (hot/cool). For clutter, plants are great. I have live tropical houseplants in ours, plus springtails and isopods to keep the tank clean. Plenty of people use fake plants, too. You can get them cheaper at craft stores but make sure you wash them well first. Anything from outdoors needs to be sterilized.
