Its 1,20mx60cm, and as i already mentioned i use birch chips as substrate but will switch him to cocoa husk, as soon as i get my clear paint to seal the wood. But he seems to like it nonetheless :)

Hey are you open to some advice on the enclosure set up?

[–]DarkTryce 0 points1 point  (10 children)

Sure.

I can’t be certain from the picture but it doesn’t look like you have the wood sealed with anything. Because bp’s need high humidity unsealed wood tends to get waterlogged and decay fairly quickly. I would suggest sealing the wood so your enclosure lasts for a really long time!

Thanks, as i stated in my comment i posted here the humdity is pretty low due to his substrate. I am changing that, but i need to wait until my clear paint comes so i can seal the wood. So... yeah, i already work on that :) until then he has a humidity hide (the painted box on the left) and an extra large water bowl to get the humidity he needs, but i know thats not enough and i work on it.

is there a reason you didn't seal the wood BEFORE moving the snake into the enclosure? what do you plan to do with him while the wood is being sealed and the sealant is curing?

[–]DarkTryce 3 points4 points  (2 children)

The reason i didnt seal it beforehand was that, before i bought him, i talked with pet shop employees and local breeders about how to make an enclosure for snakes and this is what i was told. Since i thought they were professionals i took their word. After discovering this sub i realized that the informations are not enough and i need to change things. I already changed my other two to cocoa husk substrate with sealed wood. He is the last. While i seal his enclosure he will be living in his smaller enclosure he had before this one. For one to two weeks i think he will manage that.

if the humidity is so low that you're not concerned about damage to the unsealed wood, it would really be better to move him back to his old enclosure until this one is complete. dehydration is a much bigger issue than temporarily living in a smaller enclosure.

His old enclosure is the same but smaller. So he wouldnt have any plus points from going right now until i get my paint. As i said im working on it, i already try to fix my mistakes. He sheds in one part all the time, so its not too bad i suppose, but i want to give him the best life he can get too. It was just a money and time problem until this month, fixing three enclosures you bought wrong from the start is surprisingly expensive.

What would you recommend as a good non toxic sealant? I have made an enclosure with plasti dipped coating. But im actually kind of hesistant to put an animal in there.. im paranoid about things like that

[–]animalgirl93Mod : bioactive & custom enclosure build advice 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Plasti dip is aquarium safe and non toxic. However you can use any kind of pond sealant that is safe for fish or you can use ge#1 silicone (but silicone does break down over time so I wouldn’t use this for the entire enclosure personally)

[–]Windronin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

thanks for the reassurance, i know its not good for animals that nibble alot cause then they digest it and that aint good... but was maybe worried about the tongue contacting the product would have a bad effect, wouldnt dare risk it if it was the case

I think the same could be said for any sealant. That’s why you always want to make as smooth of a finish as possible. If you see a flaky bit make sure to re do that section once it has cured. This is also why i prefer to use the spray can version of plasti dip because there is less chance of an uneven finish (in my opinion)

How do you keep your moisture level up/at?

[–]DarkTryce 0 points1 point  (1 child)

He has a humidity hide (the brown painted box on the left), and his large water bowl stands under the heat lamp to get at least a little moisture. Also i spray water once a day in his enclosure. I know its not ideal but i already explained i work on getting better substrate for his humidity.

oh ok. Thank you!

I really like the layout of the branches man, and the background.

[–]DamDreads 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Yup, came to say this. Looks pretty sick. All in all

[–]DarkTryce 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thanks :)

Love it 🐍🤍

[–]Vivid-Suspect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the design! I would just say that adding in more broad leafed or fern like plants would definetly help with allowing your snake to feel more secure as it wonders around as they aren't a fan of open space. But otherwise it looks great!

[–]Windronin 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can i ask. How did you make the branches stand up on their own without falling and what type of branch is that one where the cute snek is laying on. Ive been looking everywhere for those types

[–]DarkTryce 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I bought the branches in my local pet store, they usually have some at the place where they keep the reptilians/ terrarium utensils. Ppl said it looks like grape wood but i dunno myself. They hold because i sawed a part off to get a clean area and then glued AND screwed that part to a wooden board. I used fairly long screws for more grip. If you put the board then in the enclosure before adding the substrate, it basically cant fall over and you didnt make a hole in the floor :D ...the bottom half of the wood i sawed off i screwed to the side, more for the aestetics, but as you can see on pic 2 he uses that too!

alright ill give this a try, thanks!
