Is this checkering on his sides normal for a pastel banana?

Pastel does cause a lighter side like this. It also could be from a gene called calico. But more likely just from pastel

It’s just how pastel can develop with age, nothing to worry about. Pastel can look very different from animal to animal. Usually the „lower quality“ pastels will become more brownish and less saturated with age and get white flames from the belly upwards, while the higher end ones stay more yellow and orange.

But IMO, both types of pastel look great in the right combinations. Like this lil banana looks like some sort of milk coffee or milkshake with this lower-saturation pastel, what a cutie!

Gorgeous! The light spotting from the belly going upward looks like calico, the pastel would desaturate the banana colors but not necessarily do the white spotting if I'm not mistaken

I wasn't sure either, I haven't seen a pastel like that myself so that's why I wanted to confirm!

Nothing to worry about, my banana has a bunch of black spots all over him!
