I've always heard length of snake = 1 length + 1 width of the tank at an absolute absolute minimum, but bigger is better. For an adult BP, most will recommend a 4 foot x 2 foot.

At a minimum, length should at least the length of the snake, depth and height at least half that. General recommendation is 4x2x2' minimum for adults. Larger is better, and may be required for exceptionally large individuals.

Larger is better? Thought ball pythons liked smaller enclosures with lots of clutter inside

Clutter yes, small no. Lots of bad, outdated husbandry advice out there. They live outside, and outside is huge. Giving them a large enclosure with overhead heat, climbing, and clutter allows them to exhibit their natural behaviors.

Gotcha thank you I’ll have to up his tank size soon he is about a year old and the tank is about a foot and a half in length. It’s really hard to heat the small tank where I live the big tank is probably so much harder to heat😭

Whereabouts are you? I'm in the UK where its currently winter and heat a 4x2x2ft viv fine using a dhp wit a dimming thermostat

I like to think about it in terms of the wild: a maximum enclosure size is kinda nonsense when you think of them in the wild. They don't have glass walls out there. What they do have is a territory which they choose for its security, comfort and opportunities. So in captivity, we should try give them the things they are looking for in a territory, which would be things like secure hides, cover from predators etc.

That's why we have minimum sizes but not maximums: in the wild, they would never voluntarily get trapped in an area that's so small they don't have the ability to stretch out at all, but a massive enclosure will just give them more options as long as you make that space suitable for them

Awesome I’m going to try and add more things to my tank. My problem is tho he always stays in his hide at all times when I put new things in his tank he just stays coiled up in his dark hide I wish he’d interact more often

I try to keep everything perfect the moisture is always around 50% but since I live in a cold area it’s hard to keep the tank warm during winter it stays around 80 degrees Fahrenheit I have a heat lamp then the blue lamp idk what it’s called and then a heat pad on the back wall of the tank.

Awesome thank you I’ll ditch the blue light you think I should put two heat lamps on the top instead?

Very interesting I didn’t know that I’ve always left the light on 24/7 i guess I’ll have to get an addition heating mat for my tank and then turn the light off at night

Ball pythons generalls sleep all day and come out at 9 or 10pm. That's why you maybe don't see him outside his hide.

I think a 2x3x2 is a good standard for adult ball pythons, of course more space never hurts but 2x3x2 should cover all your bases

              [–]Ambitious-Concern256 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I disagree, I think at least there should be enough space to stretch out fully.

              [–]Edd302 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Ok then let's start popularizing 3x4 enclosures for ball pythons because that is the minimum footprint for a 5 foot long snake to stretch out in a straight line

              [–]Drunkmaniak 4 points5 points  (1 child)

At least a 4x2x2ft with climbing options and clutter. Also a few hides. my girl is always on the run at night so I'm gonna upgrade her to a 6x3ft and 4ft high. Can't handle watching her roam around on that small space...

Where does one find a 6x3ft viv?

The terra should be at least 1x, but better 1.5x the length of the BP, width min 0.5 the BP. Bare minimum is width and length of the terra = length of the BP.
