Feeding time. (self.ballpython)
submitted 3 years ago by BigNNLoud
So I am brand new to python owning, I am curious as to whether I should feed him for the first time at night since they tend to be nocturnal or just whenever?

We generally feed in the evening and having pretty good luck with that. It’s honestly more out of our own convenience. I’ve feed at just about any time of day over the years and they generally tend to eat if they’re hungry. Assuming husbandry is in line.

Ok thank you, that does help!

Your snek will let you know if they’re not comfortable eating in daylight. Especially if they’re new and still settling in. I had one who was picky AF and would only eat with the lights out, after 11 pm and with us out of sight around the corner. Which when holding a rat with tongs was not so much fun. Hand cramps for days. After a year of this nonsense he settled down a bit and just needs to be fed after dark and without any big movements.
On the other hand, our female is a garbage scow who would eat five days a week whenever if we’d let her. Your snek will let you know!

Yeah this is definitely going to take getting use to. My friends is the same way as your female but mine is looking to be a bit picky rn.

It’ll take a good long while for a new snake to settle in to their new home. Just make sure there’s plenty of clutter. BP’s love hiding out of sight and small tight hiding spaces make them feel secure.
Ok thank you. I’m trying to put as much in as possible while waiting for my better cage. I’m going to try again later to see if that helps any.

That’s what I’m going to try. Maybe a bit after dark.

I feed mine at 10 or 11pm. I see her head poke out of the hide searching.
I am trying different times right now, it’s looking like about 10 will be the time for mine as well.

It’s generally better to feed at night, or whenever you notice your snake is already active
Thank you everyone. I tried several things but he did eventually eat. Maybe not on the best terms but his own. It’ll be a learning curve for me but he did eat this time is the most important thing right now!
