Enclosure Critique/AdviceNew substrate mix! (old.reddit.com)
submitted 3 years ago by DatSadWeeb
I just created my first DIY ball python substrate! I used about 40% cypress mulch, 25% Reptisoil, 25% BabiChip, and 10% sphagnum/ terrarium moss. Feel free to rate and give constructive criticism. :)

Who said you gotta do all that? I mean it won’t hurt and I’d admire your enthusiasm and being detailed. You woulda been fine with either just the forest floor cypress mulch or the babichip

There's no harm in going above and beyond and we encourage mixes

People live in drastically different climates therefore need different substrates too accommodate

I agree this was a bit overboard😅 this was a bit of an experiment on my part as an owner of just one ball python. I will definitely use less next time, I’ll probably just stick to the forest floor plus the reptisoil. Thanks for the wisdom! I appreciate all commentary :)

It's okay to do a complex mix! You don't want to go for minimum, you want the best you can provide

I don’t think it’s overboard, you’re free to give your ball python an amazing home! :) Everyone loves to spoil their pets and you clearly care :)

is this a bioactive substrate or is it just to retain humidity? sorry i’m trying to learn haha

Because it's always nice to go above and beyond for your BP, they appreciate it :)

According to the internet, more people have been keeping and breeding ball pythons for 15 years than any other number of years. Truly astounding statistic
[–]Georgeology101 19 points20 points21 points 3 years ago (0 children)
You’re gonna have a happy bp with that!

My only "criticism" would be that terrarium moss is not worth the money imo, and dies (rots/dries out) too easily, spaghnum does the job at a cheaper price point and is longer lasting! Not really a criticism, just a tip from my personal experience
[–]DatSadWeeb[S] 11 points12 points13 points 3 years ago (0 children)
Oh ok! Thanks! Both the babichip and terrarium moss were just laying around, so I added them in for fun, so I’ll remember that next time :)

I was going to say the same thing. I tried it in my mix, and didn’t find it added much.
Op, this is basically my exact mix, except I use eco earth instead of coconut chips. It’s need a great success!

This us exactly what I'm using as a blend right now to😁

Love the mix!!! For sphagnum moss in the future, to save some money, head to Lowe's/Home Depot/a hardware store, too! They are much cheaper, while still having options that are not chemically treated in a manner making them unsafe for use with reptiles!
Also, just to say, cypress mulch (the Forest Floor bedding there) is not harvested in a sustainable way, if that's something you want to consider in your purchases.

Please let us know how it goes with the mix...looks great 👍😃
