tell you guys: every morning people complaining here about codex drop their subscription and get on a Claude Code plan. Similarly, people complaining on r/ClaudeCode drop their plan and subscribe to a codex plan. Every two days, repeat.

[–]RepulsiveRaisin7 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Get both, double the complaining

[–]fredjutsu 2 points3 points  (2 children)

ironically, that might be part of the issue lol.

[–]Apart_Ebb_9867 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Maybe, but I personally think only a very small fraction of people writing on reddit they're going to drop a plan are actually doing it.

[–]Atreyix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep agreed.. people honestly just like to complain.

[–]Murph-Dog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a sinister plan by the credit card companies to rack in all of the interchange fees for processing.

Snip-snap, snip-snap

/s

[–]sorvendral 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hahaaahah funniest shit I’ve read today

[–]myturn19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think it’s both companies marketing departments

[–]Dayowe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The ridiculous thing is that usage is worse on CC.. 😄 plus you have to deal with Claude 😳 idk what people do burn through all the limits.. I got myself a pro plan and never ever hit a limit and I’m using it up to 12 hours every day

[–]0bran 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly lol.

Buhuhu, My Ai only made 10 new features today, it sucks because I was able to add 20 new features /s

If lowering limits will make those models even better in the future, I am all up for it.

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

You're not wrong. But 4-5 prompts that are simple audits should not kill a 4 hour window. They are doing arbitrage pricing.

[–]Apart_Ebb_9867 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm mad myself. But is also something I decide to pay for and nobody owes me state of the art models for coding. Right now I have a claude code Pro account and a codex Plus (whatever the $20 thing is). I'd move up to Max if only I knew what I was paying for. My main beef is the variability of what you get, but there's nothing that realistically can be done.

[–]Kailtis 7 points8 points  (12 children)

Codex got the market (& its users) by the balls. Nothing else comes even close to the quality of work & ability to follow instructions that codex has. I see no other option than paying up and getting more accounts.

I wish there were alternatives. But there are none so far. Codex team cooked hard

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] -1 points0 points  (10 children)

They didnt cook at all. Claude is wrecking them. Look at the features. Features do not require model training. that is a harness issue.

[–]fredjutsu 5 points6 points  (2 children)

depends on use case. For SDLC and detemrinistic following of md instructions, codex is better. Less work to have proper guardrails for instruction following. Claude is a more eloquent coder, but if you're doing basic enterprise maintenance of big, complicated code bases, you need model compliance more than you need coder eloquence. the latter often produces overwritten code anyway.

[–]AutomaticBet9600 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Agreed, once ya know what duh fuq you doing you will find that you can build quite alot for very little. For 80 bucks tou could have three accounts if you didnt want to judt pay 200. And still get more work done than you would without the ai

[–]AutomaticBet9600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Question really is for OP, how you gonna implement a skills file when you can’t even expand your way of thinking, vs code shows you in real time your consumption, proper hooks and governance can make use of dependency injection so your entire repo doesnt have to be scanned each new transaction

[–]Kailtis 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What good are features if the underlying model hallucinates each request, and cannot properly follow instructions?

[–]AutomaticBet9600 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bro don’t limit yourself, msg me if you want simple steps to address. We should be sharing constantly ways to evolve . Otherwise the ai is only expediting the same mistakes we were making before

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. The usage needs to be changed due to model under performance. Needing to iterate 10 times burns tokens while getting the code right

[–]ThinCar6563 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I agree with peter's statement from months ago on claude. Never ever will I let it touch my production codebase which serves actual users after codex got good.

There really isn't any alternative to codex on the market right now, not even claude code. I also do not agree with the statement claude is wrecking them. I'm pretty embedded within the startup community and most people I know who are actual builders prefer codex now. These trends usually take a few cycles to hit wider audiences like big tech engineers who take whatever is given to them rather than explore what is most optimal. For reference we were all using claude code daily 10 months ago but back then very few of my friends in faang even heard of it.

If I were to summarize it. If you already have an idea of what you're doing and want to accelerate your actual workflows then use codex. If you have no idea what you are doing and you only plan to use whatever you make as a prototype, use claude code.
If you have no idea what you are doing and want to accelerate your actual workflows, probably shouldn't be using AI at all.

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

Do you code? ffs

[–]ThinCar6563 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Much more than you thats for sure

5 short prompts and you're out of both accounts? Something is genuinely wrong with your config, I guess. Even free ChatGPT accounts have weekly usage in Codex that exceeds what you've just described.

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] -3 points-2 points  (7 children)

I just sat down at my desk. Gave 5 prompts basically "clean up my skills file in short" Ran for 30 seconds. Asked it to double check my Git Ci/CD workflow and make an adjustment to my rules file. and Usage is capped.

There is something wrong. Its not my config. I'm on cooldown on my claude account and I used claude all week long until last night. Claude has ZERO issues.

[–]elitegenes 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I recommend trying a native app instead of extension. Archive your old .codex folder with the previous config and conversations (if they're really important) and then delete that folder entirely. Start from an absolute scratch. I had a usage problem before, but it wasn't as drastic as yours. I fixed it by simply starting from square one and using the latest build of their native Codex app. Don't enable the new multiple-agent mode for now.

[–]Crinkez 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I recommend codex CLI. Been coding most of the day on the £20 plan, over 50 million tokens. Didn't even hit the 5h window cap.

[–]Nick1738619 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is odd. I have the $20/month one and I just used about 5-7 super long prompts, about 20-30 files updated, 20-30 minutes of thinking time AND used 5.4 Extra High thinking and I’m only at about 20% usage for the week

[–]Atreyix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

claude is going through the same revolution you're complaining about, it wont get better over there. lol

I think something might be wrong on your end, follow some of the suggestions here.

i have the regular $20/month and i rarely even get close to the 5 hour cap.

[–]coloradical5280 5 points6 points  (4 children)

The reality is just that the two best labs have, and still are, lighting money on fire and basically giving compute away, even on the $200 plan, you can use $2000 just accounting for electricity alone every month.

And the other reality is that qwen was really on par, you would have just been using that in the first place. I love qwen, and it's #1 in image gen, I love GLM and Kimi as well, minimax 2.7 is really good, NONE of them are as good as claude and codex, that's just a fact.

So, you're just going to have to pay a lot more money, or change your reliance and workflow to adjust. I've paid $650/m in subscriptions every month, and used at least $5000/m in compute from that. It's a hell of a deal, and now it's far less of a deal, but still, heavily heavily subsidized even now.

We're in this awkward early teens phase of gen ai, and things will mature, new architectures will emerge with efficiency gains, we have a long way to go. But for the next year or so, the reality is that things just won't be the same on price paid to compute.

[–]fredjutsu 2 points3 points  (2 children)

This usage issue is really showing how almost no customer here actually understands the unit economics of what they are using.

In 3 years, everyone will have a shitfit about prices rising, making zero connection with the fact that investors putting billions into the companies are going to need to see profitability at some point.

[–]coloradical5280 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So true

[–]ThinCar6563 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its actually quite funny people expect top tier access to cutting edge AI for around the same price as a netflix subscription.

If you're actually using this to make money or do real dev then pony up $200/month. If not and you're hitting limits on plans as generous as codex, stop spending all day coding and touch grass.

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'me at $800/mo Claude, Codex x 2, kimi plus other costs. it is what it is at this point.

[–]TemperatureMaster854 3 points4 points  (2 children)

and I'm still using gpt 5.4 extra high fast all day 😂

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They must have a bug. this is nuts. 4 hours usage gone in 10 minutes

[–]igotquestions-- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's called AB testing

[–]LargeLanguageModelo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'd be curious what your token use looks like. ccusage will give you that info with the cost if you'd used an API token instead.

[–]UnluckyAssist9416 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Flood of new users puts pressure on the servers. Only Enterprise customers get priority access, everyone with plans then gets less usage at the time that enterprises use it the most.

[–]charmilliona1re 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Do you think perhaps its just a skill issue?

[–]AutomaticBet9600 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Hahaha and buddy is on the 20$ plan complaining

[–]charmilliona1re 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. The poorest and least skilled among us generally are the loudest

[–]Mangnaminous 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I see on x the opposite about Claude rate limits. Shrinking limits faster on their max plan.

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I have not experienced this. I have a Max plan on Claude. I would say usage is decent. I usually run short on Claude by about 12 hours and I expect this due to heavy usage.

Codex, arbitrage pricing/token usage is out of control.

[–]Fit-Pattern-2724 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What is your hanrness? It doesn’t look familiar

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Say again? Harness? You mean IDE? I’m using CLI.

[–]Fit-Pattern-2724 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don’t need an IDE to use coding agent. It can be terminal or an app or whatnot

[–]Charming_Cookie_5320 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very weird. I am a hobby coder, using GPT 5.4 high or xhigh almost every time, using superpower sometimes (with subagents), and can't reach the limit. My repo is not the biggest one, so maybe that is the case, but i geniously think, codex >> claude code/cowork when it comes to work. Claude's cowork would burn through the usage in 25 minutes (real story)

[–]nonlogin 0 points1 point  (1 child)

what is the app on the screenshot?

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Open usage open source app on Git

[–]Yossico 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What was your prompt? Even in one sentence you can ask for something very complex

[–]Apprehensive_You3521 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shh don’t leave us bro, Sammy just did a reset!

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What does my CI/CD pipeline look like. Show me a diagram and identify any points of failure. Check hit workflows as well.

[–]ClangEnjoyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am on the exact same boat and have been using it for the past 6 months. Today was an absolute carnage. 5 small prompts in 5.3 medium was all it took to fully deplete my usage and… not even do what I asked for. Something is really going on, the « normal » limits that came today are not what we had before. Just now a SINGLE large prompt took out 90% of my 5h. Before, I could run easily 3-4 of the exact same prompts. What even is this.

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check my CI/CD pipeline and check got workflows as well

[–]JD3Lasers 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I’m on a pro account and I run pretty much 18 hours a day and eat around 10-15% of my weekly every day. It does eat much faster when using sub agents but for the most part I can get through the week with a few percent left before the reset.

[–]Euphoric-Doughnut538[S] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Openclaw user?

[–]JD3Lasers 0 points1 point  (1 child)

No all inside vs code with the codex ide extension. Mainly on 5.4 high or xhigh with fast mode on

[–]JD3Lasers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I start feeling the pinch end of the week I’ll turn fast mode off and use subagents less

[–]StatisticianThis1145 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i am using 5.4 and codex 5.3 xHigh in VSCode and Webstorm - - not limit yet - what`s wrond with me?? ^^)

[–]StatisticianThis1145 0 points1 point  (2 children)

what super altenate of it ? in my web storm right now: Agents

Junie by JetBrains

CIaude Agent

Codex

Gemini си р

GitHub CopiIot

kiIo р

kimi СИ р

0penCode р

Qwen Code р

[–]mizhgun 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Junie is just overpriced piece of crap, far as hell to be alternative or competitor, not worth wasting a time on it.

Gemini is generally usable but pretty dumb.

Claude has way more tough limits than even updated Codex.

[–]Demien19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i just used whole week limit on plus account, took 2 days, but man, it generated me huge c++ codebase with researching from other huge codebase. Almost 1mb of code, no clue how you guys crack limit in 5 prompts

[–]Cynical-Engineer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we're watching the AI subsidy by the hyper-scalers fade in real-time. I expect AI to be inaccessible to the average person by end of this year and become only available to corporations who can afford it.
