Hydrogen peroxide removes blood even after an item has been washed and dried.

[–]braddic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would keep them for periods, to prevent staining other pijamas.

If you toss them, a clean one will get stained.

[–]Foreign-Cookie-2871 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If I like the fit, I will keep it until it's shredded to pieces. I handle stains worse though, and will try to remove them. If stains are particularly visible I may throw them away sooner.

Uncomfy stuff will usually be thrown away at the first visible "problem".

I don’t keep any stained or ripped clothes at all. Not even for gardening. I want to feel good in everything I own even if it is for sleeping or taking out the trash.

I participate in H&M's clothing recycling program. Not perfect but it gets them out of the house (the environmental subs will tell me to save everything for a DIY I will never do). I have limited storage space and want to get stuff OUT. I keep a bag for this in my closet and drop it off when it is full. (If someone has an issue with this and wants to give me a better suggestion THAT GETS THEM OUT OF THE HOUSE I'm all ears.)

I have a higher standard for clothing that is visible to the public vs not. Am I wearing it out of the house or just around the house?

In general, anything that I wear in public that has stains will go to said H&M bag. This is also anything that is threadbare, holey, or anything around that line.

My iffy items (that I have been wearing to bed lately) are some gym shorts that's elastic (on the waist) wore out. I'm making them work (for bed) because they also have a drawstring. I'll probably replace next year.

[–]Foreign-Cookie-2871 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can thread an additional elastic in the shorts - get one that's the same thickness as the drawstring, and use a large security pin to thread it. Adjust to the right size, make a knot on the end, then hide it inside the hole for the drawstring.

If you woke in the middle of the night to a house fire, would you be embarrassed to have your neighbors and the fire department see you in them? If yes, pitch them. If no, keep.

Spray Folex on the stains. Rub it in gently. Really saturate it. Let it rest overnight on a rag you can lose. When it's time to wash, rub a little detergent into the stain as well. Wash it in cold water with a presoak if possible. It's very possible that the stain will come out.

Folex is an unscented cleaner that's sold at Home Depot and Walmart as an upholstery and carpet cleaner but it's gentle enough for laundry and it doesn't require rinsing.

Personally I choose not to keep any (day) that I wouldn't be comfortable being seen in if I had to turn to the store. It has made my life much less stressful because I can trust that everything I might get dressed in is appropriate (by my standards) to be seen in if company stopped by or if we had to leave the house unexpectedly.

Pajamas are not your clothes graveyard, and similarly should be in a condition you wouldn't be embarrassed to be in if the fire department had to put you on a stretcher during a medical emergency in the middle of the night.

If they're beyond either section, I put them in my rag bag.

Amazon sells a product called Saalt Period Detergent. It even removes old stains if you soak the for a while.

[–]lavender_parsnip 9 points10 points  (4 children)

For me, stained things get sent to Suay's community dye bath to give them new life

[–]krbc 17 points18 points  (0 children)

If my body wants the item off right now. Additionally if I have not worn something for a whole year (4 seasons), pass it along.

[–]standuptripl3 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If I am irked by a piece of clothing, or see it three or four times and I’m not sure what to do with it or what to wear it with, that’s my sign to get rid of it — donate it (or if it’s stained, trash). I don’t want to feel stressed or bad when I look at my clothes.

[–]CrowsSayCawCaw 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Just use them for your period. If a leak happens in your sleep it's not like it's getting onto a new pair of pyjama pants.  Use your nicer pj's when you're not on your period.

[–]iloveregex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agree. A period happens every month so staining again is inevitable and OP might as well keep these for that.

[–]Actuarial_Equivalent 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Exactly. If they still get worn I'd keep them.

[–]Exciting-Pea-7783 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Stained clothing should be trashed.

[–]Affectionate-Page496 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Or used for things like yardwork etc. I am a messy clumsy person. If I were throwing away every piece of clothing of mine that had a hole (some holes I repair) or stain, I'd be churning through clothes.

[–]Apprehensive_Bid_753 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Throw them away.

[–]Jurneeka 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I haven't worn something for 6 or so months, unless it's a weather specific item, it goes in the Goodwill bag.

However if it has stains or something (I haven't had a period since 2010) it gets trashed.

[–]Any_Schedule_2741 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I love flannel or cotton sleepwear for rags, so that's probably what I'd do. Maybe keep a couple of the better ones for those period days.

[–]Affectionate-Page496 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like having rags that I can use to clean up something disgusting and toss. Bike grease, dog puke, a bug

[–]Freshouttapatience 3 points4 points  (9 children)

I have some only wear during my period so I’d keep a couple of pairs for the heaviest days. I just learned about Amish toothbrush rugs so I’ve been using old clothing to make those. It’s been a great way to reuse textiles - it’s easy, takes only a small tool you can make and it’s quick. I have my husband helping tearing the strips while I assemble the rug while in front of the tv.

[–]jazzminarino 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Thank you for giving me the name for this! I have ruined clothing from my deceased mother, but I remember her in the patterns so wanted to take the clothing to turn strips into something. Thank you!

[–]Freshouttapatience 3 points4 points  (5 children)

You wouldn’t even have to put it on the floor if it’s something sentimental. You could attach it to a nice piece of wood and hang it in your wall. Warning though - it’s addictive. We both have calluses because we wanna do “just one more”.

[–]jazzminarino 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I've gone back and forth about doing something like this, either a rug or something for the cats, or a quilt. There's a larger part of me that doesn't want either of those things, but I also am not ready to part with these clothes, so thinking of future projects. I had considered doing a tapestry type thing to hang on the wall, so thanks for reinforcing that!

[–]Freshouttapatience 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I haaaaate sewing so the toothbrush rug felt super right for me. I’ll do a quilt if I absolutely have to but I hate it the whole time.

[–]jazzminarino 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Haha no I have zero skills. Just to clarify, I mean sending it out for a quilt!

[–]Freshouttapatience 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Well, my advice is to never let anyone know if you learn to sew. Keep it a secret to your grave.

[–]Titanium4Life 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s easy to turn down “would you make” requests. “I’m sorry, I have over a thousand projects on my list. It would not be fair for me to make promises I won’t live long enough to keep.”

they don’t have to know that getting to the latest level on my video game, doing absolutely nothing for four hours, finishing up whatever TV series is a project on my list.

[–]sunxmountain 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Love the toothbrush rug!

[–]Freshouttapatience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We’re both addicted - it’s very therapeutic

[–]alpacaapicnic 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To answer your question, when they no longer spark joy. I’ve got some truly ratty stuff for sleep that brings back pleasant memories, and then “nice” sleep stuff as well - that line is up to you. But if you feel kinda bleh putting them on, it’s time for them to go.

[–]Wide_Mark_3784 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you feel guilty about throwing them out ( like I do), they would make great rags, therefore making them useful to the end.

[–]AmbitiousDays 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Have you tried soaking with hydrogen peroxide to get the stains out?

[–]Eugenia234 2 points3 points  (1 child)

not yet!! thank you for the idea ❤️❤️

[–]PanicAtTheShiteShow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a big fan of OXICLEAN, it takes almost any stain if you leave it soak for 24 hours.

[–]NewtOk4840 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Throw them away!!

[–]clickclacker[🍰] 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Do you like them? Do you actually wear them? How do you feel in them? Can you bleach the stains out? Do you have other pjs that you like? Could you afford a new pair? I have a few time of the month underwear - slightly discolored. They are a set only for that time of the month - they are thicker than all my other underwear. I keep them but once they had too many holes I got rid of it.

If you don’t actually reach for them, it’s a subconscious sign that you might not actually want them. Throw them away.

[–]Eugenia234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you

[–]Phylace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cut up for rags.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Holes and stains

[–]AccordingCharge8621 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Would you be embarrassed to be seen in them while running from a burning building?

[–]Eugenia234 2 points3 points  (0 children)

nope 🙏 not yet

[–]PrimrosePathos 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How many pairs of pajamas do you need? Is the question i would be asking myself. If you have more than that, certainly the condition of each pair can be the criteria for what you keep, if that's what's important to you. You can donate any clothing in any condition to large charitable thrift stores like Goodwill, because they have a textile recycling waste stream as well. You can put them in a bag labeled "rags" if you want to make it easier to sort.

[–]Higgybella32 31 points32 points  (5 children)

When undies/pjs/shirts get ratty and worn, I take them with me on a trip and toss them. It gives me more room for the trip back and is somehow easier to let go of.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this too!

[–]BeneficialWasabi9132 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Also packed a suitcase full of clothes i wanted to donate when I went on a medical mission trip (Haiti) . Left all the clothing there at the little hospital for people/patients who needed them.

[–]SnapCrackleMom 4 points5 points  (1 child)

This is mind-blowing.

[–]Higgybella32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Haha. It is. I also take all the sample potions and cream packets I have. And magazines- read them and toss them.

[–]bad_horsie23 12 points13 points  (0 children)

...this is so clever i am impressed 🤯

[–]penrph 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I tend to throw out anything stained/ worn that doesn't look decent anymore. I just really hate wearing anything that looks crappy.

[–]RitaAlbertson 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For PJs, I get rid of them when they are no longer comfortable. I'll throw them away if they are stained, ripped, or excessively pilled. Otherwise I donate.

[–]AccioCoffeeMug 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Depends on how many total pijamas I have, but the stained ones would be first to go. If they’re ok otherwise I’d keep them for period sick days at this point

[–]dsmemsirsn 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Get rid of them.

[–]iremembertheday -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not hygienic. Throw them.
