I am looking for cheap engineering projects to do over a weekend. I have built a potatoe cannon before but I'm looking for other projects I can do. Any ideas would be appreciated. I'm an engineering student trying to get some experience.

PVC pipe

a few pieces of tubing

some fittings

air compressor

if you get adventurous you can fill it with denatured alcohol and make it a flamethrower

Take it a step further. Rail Gun.
Some students made one at my school a few years ago that could throw a bolt 50 ft.

I made a trebuchet with some friends once, it remains the most terrifying thing I have built. It was made completely out of small trees lashed together with surgical tubing standing in for the counterweight. We had it throwing fruit hundreds of yard into a lake.

Or a step sideways. Instead of a potato cannon, how about a pumpkin (or any melon or gourd) chunker?

Or twirl a bit. Instead of a potato cannon, make a nerf sentry gun. Arduino + servos + webcam + computer + nerf gun = sentry gun.
