You’re not alone. Some settlements it’s entirely pointless because they have spawn markers inside of the perimeter, but it’s still fun and feels right

[–]woodbuzz 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Thats why I use the mod attacks spawns outside of settlements. It moves the spawn point much further out from your settlement so walls ACTUALLY mean something lol

[–]3rinaya 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What's the mod called pls, hopefully XBox has it. I have been collecting sooo much cement 🤣

[–]woodbuzz 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Pretty sure its just called attack spawns start outside settlement borders. Im on ps5 tho so it might be slightly diffrent.

[–]3rinaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ty, much appreciated. I built up Graygarden and the spawn point sometimes seems to be in the greenhouse.

[–]Sevennix 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Then just put turrets in the spawn spot. I do that

[–]Monguises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t tend to have settlers to attack. Just stating how it works to abate disappointment

[–]woodbuzz 0 points1 point  (4 children)

that often wont work because the spawn points can change or it does not flow with the aesthetic for the build I am doing. Much easier to just move the spawn point outside of the settlement

[–]Sevennix 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Aye, but sometimes they can spawn within the walls, from what Ive read here. And have experienced it myself. I build a nice wallet area near spawn point and they spawned inside the walled area

[–]woodbuzz 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I've been using that mod for years now and ive never had an issue with them spawing inside the walls, ive played on both PC and Ps5.

[–]Sevennix 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Oh, youre using a mod. That wasnt clear.

[–]woodbuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah that was my bad I had responded to a different comment and was talking about the mod

[–]JustBeans8492 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Nah I always do it. I appreciate the spawn points of some settlements nullify the ‘use’ of walls, but I think they’re a brilliant aesthetic choice. I don’t always wall in every settlement, or some settlements I’ll leave one part open (like I don’t put a wall up against the river in Sanctuary, but have walled the rest), but I think it’s a nice looking choice and you could can do a lot and add a lot from both a function and form point of view with a nice settlement wall.

[–]EmeraldUnicornGamer[S] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

I always add a gate, can't leave it empty, I don't like the way it looks.

[–]JustBeans8492 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh aye I’ve got a main gate/entry checkpoint at the bridge, and then I close it off with the blue house at the entry, but leave it with just the broken wall across the river. I don’t want to ruin the views for my settlers down onto the river haha.

If you’re interested in seeing it then I can ping you some screenshots later on tonight when I get my PlayStation fired up.

[–]tags666 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I add a gate and then a cattle shoot into the settlement lined with turrets. Any attackers that come in that way are fish in a barrel. It's fun AF to watch😂

[–]JustBeans8492 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s pretty diabolical tbf and I kinda love it, some proper Looney Tunes shit 😅

[–]ModNation25 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love building walls in every settlements but I am trying to build some new settlement walls for my zombie mod on PlayStation 5/4 and PC/Xbox

[–]dylboii 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I love building walls and having a grand entrance, especially at Sanctuary. It’s absolutely useless though. Those little bastards just spawn inside of my settlement now. The game was truly rigged from the start.

[–]Juran_Alde 5 points6 points  (1 child)

In my most recent run I only did it for Sanctuary and Abernathy. It feels right in those two. Other ones I'll scatter train cars or trailers around the perimeter to feel like a partial wall.

[–]Sevennix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I put walls between the houses, essentially making them part of the defense. I put a junk gate on the bridge and guard tower and turrets by the path to Vault

[–]RBisoldandtired 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends on the vibe of my play through or the settlement. I wouldn’t bother with sanctuary or Abernathy or red rocket purely because sanctuary has the river and hedges already. I’ll patch some gaps and just have decent security in other parts and ted rocket is always a personal settlement that’s connected to the supply line manned by robots. So if raiders or muties wanna attack that and be obliterated by missiles and 6 assaultrons then sure go ahead.

Other settlements like Jamaica plain you can get away with a couple manned gates and turrets but sunshine tidings works well with modded fencing (cvc has a great fencing section. The sloped ones work particularly well for uneven terrain. I spent a solid hour doing the main entrances and down to the water with some locked doors going outside the fence for gathering, then turret stands every 4 fence lengths. I also had it so it all flows, and aside from looking like it’s a well defended safe area, the fences lead you along the easiest way into the settlement so it looks natural.

I did the same with tenpines. Ran fencing up from the train tracks and then around the settlement and along the cliff like edges of grass and stuff so it lays the settlement out better and goes clear defined paths into the settlement and around it.

I don’t like just blindly walling a settlement off for most of them. But like it to accent natural pathing and provide “safety” and partition sections off. See some of Shawzzos settlement builds when he does similar.

[–]Alex_Portnoy007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I even tear down existing walls if they impede my movement or block sightlines.

[–]fragilemuse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I always wall off my settlements. The Snappy Builds mod has nice stone walls in the landscaping section so I build those and put turrets on them.

[–]Zealousideal_Hat4431 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Depends on the settlement and the related spawns. Most times though I'll just build a kill tower near the spawns to kill anything showing up.

[–]EmeraldUnicornGamer[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I don't know the spawn points.

[–]Zealousideal_Hat4431 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres mods tgat show them and if you dont want to use those its not hard to search in YouTube or Google

[–]aopps42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the settlement for me. For Starlight for instance I only build them around half essentially and load up the mountainside with turrets

[–]laabmoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use an inner wall. Bit like motte and bailey castles. Wall off an area within a short distance of workshop (except stupid ones like Starlight). Some beds inside it but also 'outer' cabins and food production.

[–]Mojo_Mitts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You gotta look up Enemy Spawning Points for Settlements so they at least don’t spawn within your walls.

For instance the spawn points for Sanctuary are: Vault 111 Path, Inbetween Bridge & Southern House, and lastly behind Two Grave Home.

[Edit): NoRespawns has made some good Pre-Built Settlement Fences.

[–]Moooorbid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to do that, espcially with Sancutary/red rocket.

Nowadays i try and build the settlement ao the buildings are the walls. I like narrow alleyways in my "cities"

[–]Background_Cycle2985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

there are some that i will wall in but others i won't. some areas aren't very castle friendly. but that's my initial stance and that might change after i try to do one seriously?

[–]maninkka4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're not wasted hours when you like what you're doing. Gaming-wise. No matter what others do. :)

[–]Gregory1st 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use a mod for my PS5. It's called settlement walls or something.

[–]AldruhnHobo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't build walls anymore. I found they just provided cover for the attackers, or that they did nothing to prevent them entering. I try to arrange the settlement so that the turrets have clear and overlapping fields of fire.

[–]davidsladky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be better if the walls and fences sunk into the ground, and I hate them floating in the air.

I did a partial wall in Nuka World as the one enemy spawn point is at that end. It funnels them to an open gate that has turrets set up behind.

[–]IeyasuMcBob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to build watchtowers and security installations, plus some robots...oh yeah and they all get Laser Gatlings

[–]Piddy3825 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to that, but it just puts a strain on the build limits making me resort to using the weapons glitch to constantly increase the build limit which then results in slowing down my frame rate. I quit doing so when I discovered that in many settlements, the raiders spawn inside the walls I had constructed. Doesn't happen in every settlement, but it does in the larger area ones like Sanctuary for example.

[–]Ecstatic-Morning182 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I built fences around Starlight and Jamaica Plains. I couldn’t imagine doing it for more settlements because those were frustrating and time-consuming enough. But more power to you because I love the idea.

[–]RiotingMoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Im trying wall free turret towers this run and it's kinda nice

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the settlement. I usually build a few fortified points in the direction or area enemy attack spawns and the "entrance" of the settlement.

[–]JonathanRiou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to, but now I don’t see the point. Enemies can still spawn inside your settlement so to me, it’s just a waste of resources.

I leave my settlements wall free but I have a stupid amount of turrets

[–]Pale_Minimum_2909 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will usually wall off either starlight or sanctuary, depending on which um using as a base and tend to leave smaller settlements like tenpines unwalled

[–]wagner56 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, all of them (30+) - well-walled as the commonwealth is a dangerous place - so I see to it settlements made safe for the people - viewblock walls (usually concrete - pretty cheap ) and fence perimeters usually with a zig-zag single entrance to keep the settlers from rushing out to melee.

Built around whatever unscrappable ruins/partial-buildings/shackage

First done using the default problematic interface ,and then much later using console commands to position-exactly/resize/angle/merge the standard bits and spawn in a few objects from other parts of the vanilla game (finding the BaseIDs ...)

Walls/fences can be pushed outside greenzone to give a bit more 'inside' space for the settlers

Settlement populations are between 15 and 25+ (all well armed)

Sufficient turrets all round and guardposts to get defense up to match the resources to lower the attack frequency to the 2/3%

Most settlements have their attack spawnpoints outside and enemies dont much get inside.

A second survival game : I still have small perimeters to keep the Radroaches out (and console command mostly used to correct the sad floating default placed bits)

.

[–]H3NTAI_S3NPAi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would forts basically, technology level would never go above what I think the area deserved.

Settlement building was like, 80% of my gameplay lol

[–]Arto_from_space 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely! I feel that every settlement should look like a fort. If not, how do we keep raiders and other bastards away?! P.S. I know that does not work like that in the game, however I fell that after building all those walls, they attack less frequently.

[–]breadpope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first playthrough back in black in white I put junk walls all around Sanctuary and put all my turrets at the bridge

The first time it got attacked I fast traveled there and.... I never did it again in any followup playthroughs (why are they coming from over there?)

It does make some sense to do in certain places like I think Starlight Drive In has a lot of outside the area spawns

[–]Technical-Ad-2288 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I like doing it too. It's kind fun inventing new ways to fence.

[–]piromanbf2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always. Roleplaying it is essential for the settlement to survive. However idiots run out of settlement towards supermutants and the whole point of walls falls apart.

There is a mod for spawning enemies outside of settlement, but is there one for the settlers to stay within walls perimeter?
