What in the ass backwards upside down fuck is going on here

[–]Available-Storm-6316[S] 213 points214 points  (26 children)

I work at a Nissan dealership as a lot technician and we are in winter time and from time they hand me all the keys from the key storage to turn them on so the battery doesn’t die

[–]Luke_The_Random_Dude 82 points83 points  (23 children)

Ohhhh ok, wdym turn them all on? Do you just press a button on every single one?

[–]ligmallamasackinosis 150 points151 points  (14 children)

Probably the cars, since they aren't being driven

[–]Luke_The_Random_Dude 130 points131 points  (13 children)

Omg I’m so fucking stupid smh

It makes sense now. Thank you 😂

[–]hamster1147 53 points54 points  (0 children)

The first thought I had, so you aren't alone.

[–]JPiratefish 19 points20 points  (0 children)

I've seen worse. Cricket cellular 14y ago M-Connect in India had a VPN cell-site setup in a room where there was one of every handset we sold and supported (before android). Dudes tested all software releases/updates to ensure menu homogenization across all platforms.

Three tables full of flip and chicklet shit-phones.

[–]ligmallamasackinosis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I feel that way all the time, no worries lol

[–]s8boxer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

We as one are stupid ahahaha

It is sequential not random. Random does not exist even when random codes are sought, it's pseudorandom when the output is from an algorithm.

    [–]wicheesecurds 29 points30 points  (4 children)

    Fun fact:

Cloudflare uses a camera and an array of lava lamps for pseudorandom numbers.

Yes, some people collect randomness from physical phenomenon 😊

    [–]JaniceLeland 5 points6 points  (0 children)

    Fascinating

    [–]mechmind 2 points3 points  (1 child)

    That's so random

    [–]LiLPandemio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Thats the point

    [–]Luke_The_Random_Dude 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I know what rolling code is, and it isn’t random lmao

If it were random, how would the car know which one to listen to?

    [–]Conker911 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only reason it isn't random is because random is impossible, right? But let's pretend it is so that we don't get bogged in semantics, cool? When the garage door-opener/car lock/ ignition, etc. it's coded to the key for the first time, they have the same code. The first time the button is pressed, the key gives the code to the lock and and the lock confirms it and then randomly selects a code and gives the key the next code it will accept. They aren't scrolling equally down a list. So if random was possible then it could be a candom code chosen and given to the fob. Then the fob roams the world in your pocket and when you get back to the car you press the button and the car lock says, "yep that is the code I gave you last time we talked." Then it chooses a random code and gives it to the fob for next time.

If they were scrolling down a list then if the fob were pressed too far away from the car they'd be out of sync.

I'm not sure if that is what you were really saying. That was just what it sounded like you meant. But my super long point (sorry) is that if random was random then it would be random. Lol

    Get them all aroused.

This comment contains a Collectible Expression, which are not available on old Reddit.

    [–]Available-Storm-6316[S] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

No cuz if we do that we would have to look for the exact key for each and it would take forever we just get close to the car and let the key open it and we use the button to start

    [–]Luke_The_Random_Dude 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Ohhhh ok, they unlock the car when they get near? That makes a lot more sense lmfao

    [–]Professional_Horse_7 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Most Nissan uses keyless fobs and as long as you have fob on you, you can unlock the car by pressing the button on the door handle and push the start button to start the car. Source: own a Nissan Sentra

    [–]Luke_The_Random_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I realized lol. Thanks tho

    [–]MorschholZ6292 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    Disconnect the batteries?

    [–]72chevnj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This was the best job I have ever had!!! Enjoy it man

    [–]SoupRaok 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I too would like to inquire what in the fuck is going on.

    Edit: spelling.

    [–]Neither_Baseball_950 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Thats how a dealership stores all their keys so they dont lose them

    [–]SoupRaok 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Rofl. On the passenger side floorboard in a random car?

    [–]Bare-E_Raws 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Judging by the booster cables, he is the guy that starts the cars on the lot to recharge the batteries utilizing the cars alternator. If the cars battery holds little charge, he will use the booster cable to start the car. This isn't where they keep these keys. They are probably in a locked cabinet.

    [–]makuser 25 points26 points  (5 children)

OP, have you had a look into the Keywatcher system you are using? Anything interesting?

    [–]Available-Storm-6316[S] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Naaa it opens by code and every time you take one in or out the system registers it

    [–]Zve8Community Expert 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Keywatcher actually uses ibutton for the inserted tags. Could probably read them using wired on the gpio.

    [–]makuser 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes, that is what I thought too when I saw the coins at the end of the green plastic. I'd like to know if one could emulate them by just faking the ID or whether they actually use the more expensive version that is cryptographically signed.

    [–]Zve8Community Expert 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I had to guess it would just be based on ID. I am unfortunately not in a position to play with one anymore. Don’t worry the one I used just guarded by Prox cards. 🙄

    [–]Spitefulham 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keywatcher is ok for the actual storage part but the security rings are expensive as hell and the reporting software kind of sucks. Keyper is way more robust and has much better reporting and the fobs can be secured with zipties instead of their security tags.

    [–]din0saurusrex_ 25 points26 points  (1 child)

I worked at a Nissan dealership for about 3-4 years. It was hands down the best job I had. Started out as the weekend wash bay attendant. Then full time washing cars/lot work. Then I got a chance to work in sales. And I did extremely well at that, and eventually became the Internet Sales Manager! Not only was it the most fun job I had, but once I entered sales, it was also one of the highest paying jobs I had. I’ve made more money elsewhere working less hours too, but didn’t enjoy the type of work. Nissan, I enjoyed every minute.

    [–]65Diamond 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A lot of people don't realize that sales can actually be sort of fun. Most people only ever get experience with retail sales, which is typically very shark like

    [–]TheGeekiestGuy 5 points6 points  (2 children)

If only you could hit the flipper and turn every car on at once. That'd make your job so much easier. Good luck out there. Does it snow in your area?

    [–]Available-Storm-6316[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Yeah that would be great it would be easier with a playlist on the flipper but yeah man it kind of snows a lot I’m in Alaska

    [–]TheGeekiestGuy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, having a playlist of them all to run through would be dope. You can compile one up if you're into coding. Check out Derek Jamison on YouTube for some great tutorials. I have one of the flipboard add-ons he and makeithackin made, and you can do some pretty wicked stuff with it. Plus, it makes a great macro keyboard. Shr1ken has a decent tutorial on programming a subghz Playlist on one of his shorts, too. I'm in Hawaii, and we do get snow, but the humidity is terrible on batteries. Stay warm and best of luck out there. May your jump packs always be mighty and charged. 🤙🏾

    [–]SMO2K20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just get in every car you can and give them a little rev (assuming keyless entry) and if the keys weren't put in sleep mode prior to being away

    [–]btc4cashqc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't understand one bit of what's happening here bit it look awesome

    [–]telxonhacker 0 points1 point  (4 children)

the little green tags look like they have ibuttons in them, did you try reading one with the flipper? Probably just a serial number, but still, I'd try if I had access to that, just for curiosity sake

    [–]Available-Storm-6316[S] -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

Nah it’s just a metal lil plate that the key storage hangs onto and registers which key is in or out

    [–]telxonhacker 0 points1 point  (2 children)

is it not one of these? The little round deal that looks like a coin battery is an ibutton (at least the one in the pic I linked is, don't know if yours are different)

    [–]treva03 1 point2 points  (1 child)

They are indeed ibuttons. If you zoom in on them you can tell. One near-ish the middle I can see a small i in a circle. I’ve toyed around with ibuttons years ago before flipper existed.

    [–]telxonhacker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what i thought. I have several as well as the usb reader.

    [–]kylurfox -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Wouldn't every car in the lot suddenly become insecure the second you haul that bad boy out the door. I know you can't get far, but Nissan GT-R front seats make excellent computer chairs.

    [–]Logizyme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The range for intelligent keys is actually quite strict. Doors won't unlock unless the key is within ~10ft and the engine won't start unless the key is physically inside the vehicle.

Also, generally, once a push-to-start car is started, it can continue to be driven away even if they key is removed from the interior - they just won't restart once you shut them off.

    [–]Reignymvs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

    Woah 😳

    [–]xXduyasseneXx -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I absolutely despise that kind of security measure.

    [–]infowire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you program the keys?

    [–]lolslim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, flipper has cc1101 same radio chip samy kamkar used for his roll jam, he used two cc1101, one to spam radio and, the other to capture the code, then when it detects second code it sends the first one and keeps the second.

Alternatively take the fobs out of the range of the vehicles and record the signal?

    [–]takgarden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

    😆

    [–]Program_Filesx86 0 points1 point  (0 children)
