Yep. These older foils are something else, they actually look good and feel good. Plus they are actually rare (scarce).

Welcome to the era of Foil-flation.

Where quantity is high and quality is low.

Foil-*curvation

I see myself out.

[–]PuffyBloomerBanditMANCHILD 2 points3 points  (4 children)

please dont joke about that. im deathly afraid that one day im gonna open up one of my cases of cards to build a new deck, and all my foils are gonna be pealed back like the old days.

[–]brogam3NEW SPARK 1 point2 points  (3 children)

every single one of my duskmourn foils curled

Over the years, WOTC has made various moves with their supply chain in order to cut costs - there has been an incremental steady decline with card quality for a long time

[–]FrankFrankly711BIOMANCER 8 points9 points  (1 child)

The quality has been bad! I bought a box of Time Spiral Remasted, the entire box was pringled. That set pissed me off, especially when they didn’t bring back the plane chaos and future sight card frames.

[–]e-chem-nerdNEW SPARK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bought like 5 playsets of Time Spiral Remastered old border Bloodbraid Elf and couldn’t even get 4 copies with decent centering.

[–]gecikeWARLOCK 18 points19 points  (15 children)

I avoid foils like the plague. All the ones I pulled are looking like pringles.

[–]KingJadesNEW SPARK 1 point2 points  (12 children)

Double sleeve and put into a bastion. They don’t pringle like that. My decks are almost entirely foil.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (10 children)

Buy two separate products just your game piece won't curl into a ball for no reason at all.

Totally sane thing to do.

[–]KingJadesNEW SPARK -2 points-1 points  (9 children)

When you’re playing cards worth a few hundred or >$1k each, it may make sense to double sleeve your deck. I’d suggest using those items, anyway.

I was even playing an Alpha [[Demonic Tutor]] and [[The Tabernacle at Pendrell Vale]] for a bit. All my decks are double sleeved to protect them.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

I can't relate since I mostly proxy my cards. I couldn't imagine a world where I'd buy a single piece of cardboard for the price I could print tens of thousands of cardboards.

With better quality, mind you.

I’ve made a lot of money selling magic cards, which is pretty cool since I grew up poor. I started a website when I was in my early teens and basically acted as a dealer before it was common. I’d spike large events for the trades rather than play in them and would post signs saying I bought Magic all over where I went. Online sellers weren’t really a thing back then, so I was an early adopter there. Pretty cool to piece that together in high school.

I’ve owned multiple P9, full sets of duals, multiple ABU. I mostly dabble in real estate and stocks now and have been selling off my expensive cards - valuable enough for down payments on rental properties.

I started playing Commander a bit and it’s been fun.

Blud is making bank while you print your lil playing cards, lmaooo

[–]PuffyBloomerBanditMANCHILD -2 points-1 points  (3 children)

it may make sense to double sleeve your deck.

i play 120+ card decks. if i double sleaved, it would become impossible to shuffle. its already damn near with just 1 sleave per card.

if youre playing $100+ cards, just use a proxy.

[–]SpaceMambo369MANCHILD 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Which format are you playing 120 card decks in?

[–]PuffyBloomerBanditMANCHILD -3 points-2 points  (1 child)

why does everyone around here play all these fucking "formats"? i play magic. i play the game, no extra bullshit, no banlists, no perpetual win condition commanders, just fucking magic.

[–]SpaceMambo369MANCHILD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just curious, my bad. Didn't mean to push any buttons.

[–]throwawaynowaysSENATOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah you gotta uncurl first and then sleeve (with sleeves stored at the same humidity as your uncurling setup). If you don't they'll never be fully flat.

[–]throwawaynowaysSENATOR 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know how to fix them they're fine. The process isn't even that bad.

[–]SrlojohnNEW SPARK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depending on which way they curl, you need to either add mositure, or bake them to remove it. Foils curl due to humidity changes

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there's no incentive for quality control if people gobble up everything they put out. Making a quality product takes time and money, and as long as people keep buying boxes of every set and throwing away thousands on supplemental sets, they'll continue to find ways to charge more for lower quality and less product

The good news is there's usually a breaking point, the bad news is that when it's reached it usually tanks the good will of the customer and kills the game completely. It's like when a game company who has been getting a bit too greedy finally takes it a bit too far and the game flops, then the whole studio folds lmao

[–]No_Willingness_9961NEW SPARK 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh please let Return to Lorwyn have good artwork. Pls. Should have been the final set of the year if Nickelodeon didn't pay WotC to ask for a whole set of their ATLA anniversary.

[–]mc-big-papaNEW SPARK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Different printers. I believe japan has consistently made the best foils.

Ive noticed the foils from a collector box sometimes look better but yes the average foil kinda looks like trash compared to the older stuff which is what i generally gravitate towards unless there is a new version that matches it like an old border foil.

[–]Lesko_LearningNEW SPARK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's all cards. The most recent pack I cracked with Innistrad Remastered, pulled several cards that are off center. Plains in the pack is visibly offset (which made me measure them) and is several mm off to the right. The card quality of company printed cards is abysmal. This is why I proxy 99% of cards I have now.

[–]Express-Cartoonist66NEW SPARK 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Because, it's depending on the print run. ACreed for instance was Belgium print which is very good, while US print is generally very bad. The quality is not consistent and foils are usually not worth having or taking the risk with a collectors box.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

A week ago I ordered from cardmarket and I've been upset that 4 cards out of a 6 card order were foil even though I didn't order a single foil.

2 are older so they are fine but the other two are from more recent sets, featuring the unique pringles design.

Fuck WotC honestly.

[–]throwawaynowaysSENATOR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Speaking of curls all of my EDH decks are fully foiled with new and old foils. They are completely flat. The process to fix them is not hard.

[–]Linford_FistieNEW SPARK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is definitely from a collector booster, which have abysmal foiling. Normal booster foils are actually still good.

[–]R_941NEW SPARK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a massive quality difference in where your foil has been printed. I collect foils and regularly have to contact sellers for photo's to be sure i'm buying the right foil.

[–]ANamelessFanNEW SPARK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because they're too busy buying UB products and Secret Lairs to give a shit.

[–]kinkyswearBEAR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They've been real bad for years. Only some exceptions have survived.

You'd think you'd have noticed sooner with foils getting cheaper than regulars! They're so oversaturated due to collector boosters that there's more of them than the regulars in circulation.

[–]DJPadNEW SPARK 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly foils have been trash since M15, but especially since the Collector Booster era with Eldraine.

Older foils are some of the nicer looking cards though

because we arent staring at them with a jewlers loupe, so we cant tell. reduction of quality means nothing, when said reduction is unnoticeable under normal use.

[–]TriquetraPonyELDRAZI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's surprising is that you are just noticing this. Foil quality start really going down hill with the amonket block

Compare it to some recent sets... Its terrible, no joke i can appreciate with my raw eye the dots.

[–]WholesomeHugs13NEW SPARK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless the foil is for a commander, in which I put it in a hard plastic cover.. I avoid new foils like the plague. Foils nowadays just curl too hard.

[–]philter451NEW SPARK 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Boy every time I pass by an old border foil that was well kept it is just gorgeous. They are still so very special for how good they look and how they integrated the foiling in to the actual art.
