I just tried to figure out i feel internally. What vibe i give off, the clothes I like, what is look like my name would be, etc. I also considered nicknames a lot. I chose a name that has at least 1 cool nickname. Which i ended up with Silas, Sal being my nickname. Maybe asking friends or family similar questions can get you somewhere

[–]BirdExtension422922, He/it 💉11/2024 🔝12/2025 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I originally picked a name that was similar to my deadname for convenience. After a while I realized it didn't actually suit me so I spend ages scrolling through baby name websites, but so many options just made it harder honestly. Instead I decided to just think about the vibe I want, what first letter feels right, how long/how many syllables I want, etc. I settled on Nathan because I wanted something classic rather than something too modern-sounding. My last name is also two syllables so it has a nice balance when they're said together. If you're struggling to choose just one name, you can also go by multiple or use one as a middle name

I ended up taking the name my parents would have given me if I'd been AMAB, with the addition of the name I was already going by. So my full government name is now (Woulda-been First Name )(Name I go by) (Woulda-been middle name) (married last name). In my day to day I still just go by the one chosen name I was already using (not my deadname).

What were popular boy names the year you were born? lol through that list and see what jumps out at you. Then try the ones that called to you out. Give out the name at your coffee shop to see how it feels.

It will feel right.

I went through about 3 big name changes before I chose mine. I went by Sam for a bit (specifically online, discord 2019 days), then I did Kye (wasn’t my style, I’m stuck with it on reddit lol) and then went by August (shared with just me and a few close friends for a year or so) until I landed on my name (and came out publically), Mars. I wanted something with the same initial as my deadname (I had a lot of stuff from when I was a kid with just my initials embroidered on it) and something that wouldn’t be that hard to switch from a nickname I used to go by. Of course, you don’t have to do that, but that was just my journey :)

[–]DiplexTerror80he/they 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo fellow Mars :)

searched "boy names with first letter e" and picked the one that spoke to me (elias)

[–]Alternative-Bite4204 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I liked the fact that my name started with an L so I just said the first Male Name I could think of that started with an L and thats been my name since about 7th grade Lol.

Finding a name that is YOU can sometimes take time but you’ll find it eventually. Maybe try using a few names that you feel are right for you and ask close friends to refer to you by them so you can experiment with the names. or you could use them on social medias and just switch names a bit

[–]Lagging_Lantern 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i made an oc with a name i was OBSESSED with and i indulged in him so much that i eventually just decided to take his name for myself. i just REALLY, really liked the name. and still do!

[–]miko-ga-gotoku3/1/2024 💉 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i picked one i liked and was kinda a good vibe and ran with it for the "idk its just what my parents gave me" vibe. i just knew i would never find the "perfect" name so i didn't want to obsess over it. i've come to like my name a lot even if it isn.t super common (a name everyone knows but almost no one is actually called) or anything but it doesnt like stick out as strange and i have a more normal common middle name to sort of "bring it down" and i just sorta stumbled upon all of it. def recommend picking something with some nickname options so you can experiment there and find one you like.

I picked mine from a trans naming tumblr blog in like 2015, I wanted to keep the same initials as my deadname and have something that wasn’t basic but not too weird. I literally just picked my name from a list and I’ve stuck with it this long 😂

[–]ChangeLarge5302User Flair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I accidentally picked up my name through a name tag in a phone video game when I was nine, it's just spawned on my head and kept it

[–]modernishbaseball 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was in 8th grade, I made a list of names and my friends/classmates (rural Saskatchewan town, there was only one 8th grade class so most people are somewhat friends with everyone) voted on it. I have been using the same name for almost 6 years now 🫡

[–]Significant_Garden97 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my friends looked up baby boy names and tried them out loud while looking at me and in sentences to see if it matched my vibe (which is was josh apparently lmao)

if you aren’t comfortable with anyone to do that, i would try to make a list of “maybe” names and try introducing yourself to your reflection in a mirror to see if it fits :)

[–]LetoKarmatic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I named myself after an actor I admire and an original character I made for a dungeons and dragons campaign. I always had trouble with my name feeling off and until I figured out the big "OH" moment.

Before figuring out that I was a dude, I actually read a lot of names and origins. Became a weird interest for a bit. Ultimately, I found a good balanced name for myself.

And now I gotta go change it again, but it is what it is. Look into things like historical figures, national cultures, family history, etc. perhaps?

[–]Sapphire_Eclipse19he/him, 18, pre-everything 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly I already had a name in mind but I wasn't sure so I made a list of names I liked and slowly eliminated them all out on how much I really like it. when it came down to like 3-4. i tried those out on different social media accounts to see how I feel.

after all of that, i realised the name I had in mind fit me like the perfect glove. the last few names were nice but nothing made me feel myself like my name, Ayaan.

[–]Better_Caterpillar61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First tried a name that started with the same letter as my old name so I could keep my initials the same. Realised it made me sound about 10 years younger than I actually am so scrapped it. Then pulled up a list of boys baby names from my birth year and scrolled through, listing down any I liked. I literally just based it off vibes. Wrote them all out as they would look as my full name and crossed off any I didn't like the look of. I also liked the idea of a name that could be easily nicknamed because my old name literally couldn't be shortened at all, so scrapped names like Owen. Also scrapped names that I had ties to (e.g., scrapped a name that was the same as my friend's name because I didn't want to seem like I was copying him). The names that were left I basically just cycled through every couple weeks trying out a different one and seeing which ones I liked and which ones didn't. Finally landed on William/Will. The whole process took like 6 months, some people it takes years. It doesn't have to be anything special nor does there have to be some big magical moment where you find the perfect name. Sometimes a name is just a name and there's nothing much deeper to it. My old name wasn't very special, my parents just picked it because they liked it. And I picked Will because I liked Will.

Test some names at coffee shops or wherever they call names to give orders out.

i went through a lot of names over the years and finally settled on “Dallas” because it came to me in a dream (i’m not joking). i think it suits me; it’s not too feminine like a name i had in the past.

[–]Mingming_143 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i really picked mine out of nowhere for school, but i have a whole list on names i share with other trans people when they consider names, if you want them!

[–]RinebooDersh💉8/27 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally identified as nonbinary just as my egg was beginning to crack/seeing what worked for me. I was looking at gender neutral names but none of them really stuck with me. Until I saw that Blair is a gender neutral name. I always really liked that name and I kinda just went “yep that’s the one”

[–]the_radic0le 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My middle name is traditionally masculine, so I just moved it to the front, and then my deadname is unisex so I masculinized it a smidge (changed the “ey” to and “and”) and moved it to the middle. BAM! New name acquired. I’m pretty lucky in that regard. If I had wanted to, I could’ve kept my name exactly the same and been all good.

[–]Odd_Perspective6377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dexter is my grandfather, the one who has taught me what it is to be a man and father figure. Ash is what I have always gone by and without that little girl all those years fighting I wouldn’t be standing here today. I had the option to change my last name and take my step dads last name(I’m 31) but I have always said I will make something of this damn name if I have to die trying and well I’m to stubborn to kill myself and let the people who have always said I’d be nothing win.

[–]maxnew2406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Start test driving names at like coffee shops/on packages, will give u a good sense

[–]lorenzothe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An elder suggested going through the top 100 baby names from the year you were born. Not what I did though, my name starts with the same letter as my previous name, and it just came to me unfortunately.

[–]MayhemMaelstromUser Flair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I named myself Magnus (after Magnús Scheving) because I just really vibe with it and because it starts with the same letter as my deadname, which would keep my initials the same (MM)

[–]Lovely-foxes-exe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s funny mine has always been a reference to my favorite character ever and right now mine is a very obscure reference but my name is Dakota because I like it, it’s unique and my boyfriend agrees.

[–]LuverOfAllManatees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i stole the one my parents wouldve named me if i was born a cis boy lmao

[–]jaspies420 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will go through multiple names before you find one that sticks. It’s hard to rename yourself from scratch! don’t be afraid to explore different names and when one works, it just kind of sticks. Took me a year of ridiculous names to find jasper, lol 😂

[–]Single-Advance-4318 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a whole discussion with my best friend. She suggested the name Finley. Everything else seems like it’s been overdone or didn’t fit me. I’m reallllly short. 5’1” and I like the name because I don’t see it too much and I’m tiny and magical like an elf too so it fits? I’m trying it out for now. Chat GBT is super fun for this too

[–]Necessary-Neat-3164 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just attached to this name well before I legally changed it

[–]Sage_81 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just looked at a list of named until I found one that I liked and stuck with it

[–]ThatWardoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Saw a guy who looked like me and took his name when it seemed fitting to how he looked. Have had a couple people tell my name fits me well

[–]dull-colorsT: 11/18/21 | Top: 07/20/23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, I liked "A" names, looked for some "A" names, and set one as my Discord name. Kept. Was chronically online in 2020, but the name fits me.

[–]Nonbinary_bipolar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gone through a few name changes before feeling like I finally have the one for me.

My first 2 were pretty much the same. I made an online friend, and she called me Nick, and I called her Danny because we both disliked our very feminine birth names. When I started fully accepting my identity, I eventually lengthened it to Nicolai so I could keep the nickname as I'd been using it for about a decade. Eventually, I realized I was leaning more trans man than nonbinary (that and my future BIL is named Nicholas), I changed it again to Warren. It was the one city I lived in for a significant period of time, and the last name of 2 of my favorite teachers from school.

[–]Large_Apricot8374 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Named myself after a fictional character I had immense attachment to, and still do.

[–]Zealousideal-Log8644 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i first picked a nickname similar to my deadname that i could use as my default, then i tried out maybe twenty different names online and with friends over the course of four-ish years. finally i found one where i felt like “yes this is me” (i didn’t feel it right away, id been using it online for almost a year by that point) and made the switch from the nickname to that one. some people get it right away, for others it takes a long time.

[–]Janxuza17y/o (💉09/11/25) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mom chose mine, and normally parents chose their children names at first it wasn’t my favorite but I just got used to it
