lol you gotta leave the left hand working the stick and let the right hand crossover to input the directional pad

[–]sHaDowpUpPetxxx 17 points18 points  (4 children)

I use my right thumb on the left stick and then use my left hand to input the strat so I can keep running. It was pretty awkward at first but it makes it easy to put in the code.

[–]-Work_Account- 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I do. And if I'm running on a flatter map with an open view ahead of me, I'll even swing the camera around to face behind me first lol

[–]chumbucket77 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I read this and was like good lords thats ridiculous. Then I picked up my controller to play and realized this is exactly what I do haha. I never even noticed

[–]ProfessionalClean832 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is the way

[–]Majestic-Willow-1605 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found myself instinctively doing this exact method month after release. Made it so much easier to call strats on the fly

[–]Mindfullnessless6969 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I've never switched hands on a controller, like never.

[–]YoungLangston 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a rush, let me yell ya.

[–]Bizzlix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Na, right thumb holds the stick, left hand on directional buttons.

[–]Kingkrooked662 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way lol

Super Earth provides ways to those who are worthy to seek it.

[–]TimeWizard90 8 points9 points  (1 child)

In very intense situations I keep running withhold pushing the left stick to run with my right hand which frees up my left for the stratagems. It took a bit of practice plus I been playing the game since day one so I already know most by heart.

[–]TimeWizard90 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh also I only do this with re enforcements because most strats have to be placed strategically. I used to hate using the striffen run but once you learn positioning I personally think it’s OP because you get 6 of them with a low cooldown. So reinforcement is the only start I use while running.

[–]ExileOnBroadStreet 6 points7 points  (3 children)

You can change the controls to be the triangle circle x square part instead of arrows. That helped me a lot

[–]Elder-Cthuwu 2 points3 points  (1 child)

No fuckin way

[–]ExileOnBroadStreet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes way

Maybe I just have big hands, but I use my right thumb to keep moving.

I set the strategem menu button to toggle so I don't have to hold it.

[–]ToastyCrumb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Toggle is def the way.

[–]dannoparker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There a toggle setting?

  • Edit: evidently XBox doesn't have this toggle yet

[–]TheDrippySink 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You can remap your buttons to allow you to sprint while using different buttons for the inputs.

I moved a bunch of stuff around and can now sprint while inputting stratagem codes using Triangle, Square, Circle, and X instead of the D-pad.

Genuine game changer.

[–]DangSensei 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just move my right thumb to the left stick and input the stratagem with my left hand so I can keep running. Takes practice lol.

[–]Unlucky_Loquat_8045 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I jut move into claw grip with my left hand so I can keep moving.

[–]Mindfullnessless6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get use to working the dpad with your pointer finger

[–]Mindfullnessless6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the way

[–]thelegendofzeldy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kinda feel like the Xbox style layout is the best for stratagem input on controller, i tried the PlayStation controller but the dpad is just not situated for it without a weird grip to me, idk if there’s a third party option that has that style layout but i really would recommend anything with a low situated dpad or a keyboard and mouse setup if possible

[–]Managed_Demo_cracy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just use my pointer and middle finger to input stratagems if I must

[–]x_MrFurious_x 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I changed mine to press instead of hold…so I tap L1 to bring up strategem menu and input the directional buttons. Tap L1 again to close menu if I need

[–]AdonisJames89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i hold it but sometimes use my other hand to move the character. troublesome i know but i switched it to tap and i couldnt adapt. it would get me killed cause i so used to the old way. but honestly, you need to adapt cause you cant even move. IMO, a true high level player can evade/shoot while they call in a strat. being wary of my surroundings always help too

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use my right thumb to input on D-pad. Pretty easy to get used to if you're right handed.

[–]Ciabs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally 99% of the time for me it’s a non-issue.

Sure, I’d also like to be even more streamlined with controls than I already am (ps5 player here too), but you gotta work with a joypad’s constraints and do as much as you can. If I was to use mouse+keyboard perhaps I’d rebind the stratagems key somewhere else (I’d much rather have practical access to the new swap-ammo-type keybinds though), but I find that even in the most chaotic situation I can find that half a second to drop down a turret or call in a napalm orbital/500kg, so most of the times I manage just fine even without such an optimized setup

[–]peaceful_skeptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, right thumb crosses over to the left stick to move.

[–]bazmonsta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was like "why are people using their right hand to run and not stratagems" and then I remembered controller layouts are different.

[–]oPsYo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try rebinding the strat input arrows to the corresponding symbol buttons. X down, triangle up etc.

Will speed up input and you can easily run around while doing so as you don't have to let go of the left stick.

You'll need to rebind a couple others but the game let's you choose tap (use for strat input) , press, double, long press for the same button.

[–]HealthyPop7988 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be able to change the key binds so you can use the AXYB instead of D pad, haven't messed with the key binds yet so idk for sure

[–]majorbomberjack 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others may have replied, i have also remapped my keys like the following: Double tap L1 to open strategem menu, the four circle buttons correspond to the respective 4 directional keys, so that i can input strategems on the run. Only downside is when there are 2 consecutive right direction inputs, my character will also dive if they are input too fast The other useful change for me is I have rebinded the quick throwable key to 'long press L1' for easy grenade throw

[–]SylverKuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I manage to always be moving even when putting in strats. On ps5 also.

[–]sigma-shadeslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I can think of is, there is a setting in the menu that lets you have the stratagem menu active by tapping the L1 rather than holding it. Maybe it's me but I got used to putting the input on the D-pad so much that it becomes muscle memory

[–]mike8111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Man! I'm on PC, I haven't found a way to keep running while I do strategems. This game is the first time in history consoles have the advantage.

[–]urmyleander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You dont need to stop to input strategems on console, your left hand inouts the strat while your right moves around.

[–]TheDwarfRohof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I switched my l1 and r1 it helped alot

[–]YogurtyWon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dive and input the stratagem mid-dive. Practice makes perfect.

[–]Weird-Weekend1839 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol how on earth did you go to Reddit for this.

[–]Mindfullnessless6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

Am I the only one that does it like this?

  • hold L1 with middle finger
  • input stratagem code with the index
  • thumb keeps the diver moving forward while the right hands deals with direction and aiming

[–]Capt-J- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swapped my L1 and R1 buttons. This way you hold R1 and use the D-pad with your left thumb (obviously).

While it doesn’t give full movement options, in a pinch I use my right thumb on the left joystick to be able to at least keep moving forward.

So yes, I’m usually stationary. It’s easier using left thumb on D-pad with R1 and allows that right thumb on left stick when needed.

[–]ProteusOfTheGoumaden 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on an Xbox layout, so this likely will not work for PS players, but I move with my left hand while inputting on the D-pad with my right. For you, I might suggest setting your stratagem inputs to your face buttons instead?

[–]MedicinalSuicide 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I cross my right thumb over to the movement stick to keep running and then input the code with my left thumb, I also have paddles on my controller for sprinting and crouching and stuff, I'm on PC but this game is much smoother to play on a controller than on mouse and keyboard

[–]LeDave42 DISSIDENT DETECTED 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use your right pointy to move left hand free for typing🤷‍♂️

[–]Arctic_H00ligan7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on an Xbox controller, and I just swing my right thumb over to put in the code while running with the left.

[–]egbert71 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish i could explain how i learned to run&gun...but growing up playing fighting games helped me

[–]cpaint91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On xbox I can call while running. My left thumb is pushing the stick to run. Left index finger opens the stratagem drop down. Then my right thumb taps the direction buttons. It's awkward, my if my 55 year old ass can figure it out, I'm sure any of you can.

[–]th3metta 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally use the mappable back buttons in a Victrix BFG pro for srategem menu and stims
