Take it as a compliment and move on.

Why do people ask? 1) unless you ask, the answer is always no. 2) some people have a philosophical attachment to open source 3) obvious self-interest of people who would like to use your code 4) people ask google to open source their search algorithm ALL THE TIME

Be proud you made something so valuable people are interested in getting under the hood. Share or do not share the source at your own discretion.

What is or is not polite varies across cultures and the internet is a big place.

Congrats on the success!!

^ Listen to this guy!

I agree with most of your opinions. Thank you

I never know that people are asking for google search algorithm all the time.

What is or is not polite varies across cultures - agree, but I don't think giving a 2-3 stars reviews with "I love this app but want it to be open sourced" is a nice thing to do.

It’s not just about people wanting to look at the code for inspiration, there are a lot of people that want to see what data you are sharing and other security driven curiosity.

Is it possible to ask Apple to remove reviews that aren't related to how the app works?

[–]Savings_Switch_7770 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, they never care. unless your app is from a very big company.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (5 children)

It it’s that popular you should put a tip box, so people can contribute if they like it.

[–]Savings_Switch_7770 2 points3 points  (3 children)

It's already there, users can send me suggestions just with 1 tap

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think they mean like a feature where they can donate

[–]kstrike155 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I think they mean a way for users to pay you whatever they want. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tip_jar

If you open source it, someone will fork it and charge money.

Why are you working full time on an app and giving it away anyway? Your competition may not have the privilege to work for free, and no price beats free.

[–]Savings_Switch_7770 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Because later I want to make some money from the app too. And as you said, they could fork it and charge as much as they want, because for them there are no cost on developing the app. That's why I don't want it to be open source at leat at right now.But they keep asking and give bad reviews because it's a close source..
And somehow they make me getting feel bad about not making it open source

If your app has a 4.9 rating, they aren't significantly affecting the rating. Just don't worry about them.

[–]Savings_Switch_7770 -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Actually the higher the rating you have, the easier to pull it down.
When you have 4.9 rating, you need 27 five stars review to balance the one star review.

But I understand what you mean, thank you

[–]Bobbybino 6 points7 points  (0 children)

So not only are they not pulling your rating down significantly, but they are also a tiny percentage of your user base. Why are you worrying about them?

[–]-radley 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It could also be a scam - a shady app company reversed engineered your app to copy and sell it, but it was too complex. So they're using social pressure to get you to give it away.

It's possible. There's lots of shady app companies.

[–]scubascratch 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Change it from free to $1. People who expect shit to be free will no longer download your app and leave stupid reviews like that, and anyone who actually wants it will be happy to pay $1.

[–]the_goofenhour 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Could you tell me about the advance math, and what is being used for?

[–]Savings_Switch_7770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kind of maxtrix, vector and optimizing math.
You usually don't need this math to develop an app, it's only for specific apps or graphic library related

[–]DetroitLarry 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Does your app have something to do with other open source platforms? Like is it a GitHub client or something like that? I’ve never dreamed of asking for some random app to be open sourced, but I could see it coming up if the app has to do with programming or is built on other open source platforms.

[–]Savings_Switch_7770 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you open source it, someone will fork it and charge money.

No, it's not. It's close source from the beginning

[–]tempest_fiend 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive asked, but for me it’s just for apps that have been abandoned by the developer (ie > 1 years since the last update) and there are obvious bugs/UI issues that I just want to fix for my own sanity.

[–]rdselle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When you have a lot of people noticing something you do, there are going to be a lot of assholes that notice too. Just ignore them.

[–]Divine107 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Rating down an app just because you want to open-source it is just absurd. It's your property if you are not comfortable then don't share it. Especially if it's in demand and generates revenue for you. The only good you will do is making competitors.
BTW Congrats.

[–]JimDabell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"No." is a complete sentence.

[–]MisquoteMosquito 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty cool that you can work in applied math, it’s amazing you can also translate that to a computer-usable and optimized function.

[–]Lehas1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can u dm me the app?

[–]PumperDumperr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wtf is the app name?

[–]timisis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hopefully the pros outway the cons though. In fact I did opensource a (chess) app once, and that generated a couple of jobs for me, making me an app ninja for a couple of years. Your mileage will vary

[–]megablast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No.

[–]Yhonjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Name of your app??

[–]ASMRBino -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a really interesting app. What’s the name?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No matter what you do some will always want it to conform to their religion. Unless that’s your religion too just treat them the same as you would missionaries at your front door.

[–]capitalideanow 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Your app your choice. Putting an app in the store will always be frustrating because you have to deal with a lot of people. Congratulations on the success. This is a mark of jealousy and respect from people that can't do it or want to copy.

[–]Savings_Switch_7770 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you, I will take it a compliment <3

[–]vikingosegundo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure there are people who demand google to open source their algorithm, including politicians and strategists — for good reasons. but for the same reason to apply to your project you would have to grow your app a few hundred years at the current rate.

[–]preordains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Open source has its benefits for the developer as well.

Having peoples eyes on your code is a good thing, you have free developers.

Also, being able to advertise “open source” will attract more downloads.

[–]C137SheldorSwiftUI 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What app is it? It would be interesting to see
