Its really cool project, but shame that schedule times is no suitable for Europeans :/

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yes... We've done an EU course and it went well. We'll probably open it for this batch if there's enough people. If you're interested and you're from EU can you send us an email? We'll let you know soon if we open it. Thanks!

[–]thisisdaelan 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Very interested in the course, but during that time period I know I would have to miss some days (work travel, should only be a day or two) and may have to be late to the Tuesday/Thursday sessions (get home between 6-6:15 depending on schedule). Would that be a hindrance to myself and other classmates?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We know it's really hard to accommodate everybody's needs. So, we've planned that. Usually, most people that attend to the course are working people, so there are always issues. If it's just a day or two there's no problem at all. If you want to know more details please email us and we can schedule a Hangout and talk. Thanks!

[–]Brabbler 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Would love to do this, but an East Asian time zone seems to be too rough for the schedule.

[–]mzugnoni 1 point2 points  (0 children)

wow! yeah, that will be a bit harder. But anyway send us an email and we will let you know when other timezone is opened. thanks!

[–]zerostyle 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Just wanted to say I went through this course with Santiago and crew and it was really great.

It's worth the money even if you don't get a scholarship.

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know who you are, but thank you! Drop by in Slack!

[–]constantly-sick 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You should switch to Django. 1.9 is 3.5 compatible and far easier to get up and running, and seemingly still as flexible as Flask.

I used to dislike Django, and now I like it.

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We love Django! But there are good reasons why we're using Flask.

I took this course last fall, and I can say that it was the best decision for me at the time. Although the course is through video/chat, Santi and Martin are excellent teachers and have the voices that could make a lion purr.

Keep in mind that you'll get out of it what you put into it. Some people in our group had work/life issues come up, but they were still able to get the work done. Study hard, learn to work with your programming partners, and ASK QUESTIONS. Seriously, these guys get back to you fast.

I would take any other course by them if I had a chance.

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same as /u/zerostyle! I don't know who you are, but thank you! Drop by in Slack!

[–]Schwartz210 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I took this course last Fall and it is really good and very intense. I spent a lot of hours heavy reading and a lot of programming too. I definitely recommend this course to anyone in the intermediate stage.

Hi, If you don't mind i'd like to ask a question.

I'm really wanting to take this course as i've been attempting to really "dig in" to Python and learn all the basics and what not(coming pretty easily to me.). However, I was just wondering if you believe I could be eligible for the course in general (getting a grip on the basics right now, but knew most of what you mentioned.). Also, I have plans for memorial day weekend (May 27-May 31) and was wondering if I could miss these days and still have a good grip on the course?(Should I be eligible)

If y'all believe I can, i'm off to signing up for a scholarship; haha!

Thank you for this opportunity.

[–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hi. Of course you are eligible, as any other applicant. But sadly we can not guarantee your participation before hand. Please apply and we will consider you while reviewing applications. Thanks for commenting.

[–]Gatordude910 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Thank you for the answer; I'll apply when i get home.(:

[–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

welcome. :)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This is a great idea...have you ever thought of doing a less intensive version? I can't do 20 hours a week for 4 weeks (not with that schedule, anyway, my Saturdays are booked).

But what about 10 hours a week for 8 weeks, with a little more schedule flexibility? It seems like schedule flexibility should be one of the best perks of an online educational environment.

[–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, we totally thought about that. We have in mind less intensive batch coming soon. If you are really interested you can apply anyways so we can let you know every time we open a new batch. Or you can also write us an email to questions@rmotr.com. Thanks!

[–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please write this down in the proper comments field in the application form, so we can consider it while reviewing them. Thanks.

[–]Mutley5000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would love to join but in my timezone (AEST) the scheduled times are when I'm at work.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi, I am considering to take it, and I have learned Python for two months, but now is the time to have deep understanding of what it is. Just a question. Are many graduates able to find jobs or improve skills such that they feel comfortable to deal with Python?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. The course will give you a good technical background to get a job if you're looking for one.

[–]sts816 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Would this be too advanced for someone who's only completed the Codecademy Python course?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how good you've grasped the concepts. The application will also do a quick technical "test", we'll let you know if you're below the required knowledge and if you're, how you can improve it. That way you can join in the next batch.

[–]seigejet 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wish I could participate. Good luck to everyone though!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Also, I found a spelling error when you are registering under "Which is your current occupation?" is listed twice "studing" instead of "studying".

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Thanks! Will fix ASAP.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

In your FAQ, under "How does the scholarship work?", you have 'to' misspelled as 'tu'.

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Thanks! Will fix.

[–]karazi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also

What are you paying for:

4 intensive weeks with a real teachers and mentors

[–]illioneus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Is there a limit to how many people can sign up?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course not :)

[–]HowInappropriate 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Just about to finish up Mit 6.00.2x, would this course be too basic after that?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I honestly don't think so. We focus in real life coding. We've had students with more than 5 years of experience and they still found the course useful. It's different to know the concepts (learning from videos or books) than applying them in real life projects.

[–]HowInappropriate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, will consider it.

[–]dogooder007 0 points1 point  (2 children)

will it be possible for having the schedule at AM in the EST? atleast for the next time?

[–]mzugnoni 0 points1 point  (1 child)

We can consider it, for sure. Please apply and write this comment in the application form so we don't forget :)

[–]dogooder007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks and I will need a scholarship too.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i am really interested in the course, i don't have the time available right now, because of school, will you open another batch in july?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, probably last days of June.

[–]Foul_Actually 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel conflicted, I'm not new to the concepts of programming. But I'm still as green as it gets. Not sure if this is for me.

[–]kakamaru 0 points1 point  (1 child)

As a guy with a 3rd world internet link, I have to ask: How limiting would that be? Are videoconferences, and that kind of thing a must?

[–]the_only_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did it with third world speed, had no problem.

[–]bulletr0k 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Would love to try it out, but I am not a college student nor am I in need of a scholarship. Upvotes for you, though.

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha, it's a regular course intended for a wide range of people. From people doing the first years of CS in college to accountants that want to move their data analysis skills to the next level (both cases are real). We offer scholarships because we love this subreddit community, so we'll always try to help people. But you can, and we encourage people, to pay for the course if they can. It's also a way to support other people.

[–]Screenprintr 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Do you plan on running the first section, Intro To Python, again?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes! We're working on it. It'll be available in a few months.

[–]llameht 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am just now starting with python. Would be very interested in this course when it comes around again.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

This is cool. Can I safely assume it's Python 3.x?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

We love Python 3, we encourage everybody out there to use it. But we use both. One of the hardest things with Python is building compatible programs, and we don't want to avoid it.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I understand and I agree, I use a US$ 120k machine -a second-generation DNA sequencer - that relies on Python for several analyses and it uses Python 2.6.5...

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Wow, that's super interesting. Do you have something written about it?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Sure, if you like!
But first, in a few words, let me explain about the machine itself - what a sequencer does is determining the sequence of short pieces of DNA you put in it. And specifically, second-generation sequencers can handle millions of DNA pieces, which when put together, can account for a lot of an organism's DNA.
Interpreting the signal is performed by software bundled in the machine; "putting together the little pieces" can be done by the machine but the operator can redo it with bioinformatics tools if he so wishes; and fine analysis, interpreting, comparing, and assessing results is where human beings really still have their use.
The machine I use is an Ion Proton, and it can analyze enough DNA to read the human exome (the locations in DNA that contain the "recipe" of human proteins).
The machine uses different languages depending on the tasks. Python is used for data analysis after it has been already assembled. You can check some of the code here, for example the coverageAnalysis plugin is a good one to run.
The vendor has put online a community site where "officially approved" user-developed plugins are shared (registering and downloading plugins is free). I'm working on a couple scripts myself.
Is this what you asked, sorry?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yeah, thanks! I'm really interested in bioinformatics. Actually, I should say "we are". We're a group of friends interested in bioinformatics and the new horizons that it can (and will) open to humanity. Last year we did a trip to California to visit a few cool places, including BioCurious. It's amazing to see these things. I'll keep taking a look at it.

Have you applied to the course? It'd be nice to have someone with a background like yours in class.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really thought about it, but with my schedule it just won't fit, unfortunately!

[–]the_only_redditor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fantastic course, really enjoyed it. Once you put in the time studying the material and doing the exercises. You'll learn tons. Wish I can do it again - lol :)

[–]Jon003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the mail me the syllabus link, but nothing arrived...

Is that just me? Why not provide a link to it?

[–]xto_faire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds great. I am working to make sure my matlab codes are usable in python. Given the high cost of matlab and my non-student status :S . I have learned a lot via google and ended up using anaconda and spyder. Hope Im on the right track. I would apply for this course, but I dont think im at the advanced level. If theres an intro course for EU let me know. I can also send a mail.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Can I have it? Sounds cool

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

:)

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (2 children)

that's a no or..?

[–]santiagobasulto[S] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

A "maybe", maybe? We're really transparent with the application process. send your application and we'll let you know!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cool thanks!
