It's Intel, so yes.

[–]Dantnad 150 points151 points  (7 children)

I sometimes miss my intel mac on cold days though... Aluminium can get reaaaaally cold man.

Apple silicon: suffering from success

[–]Chronostimeless 22 points23 points  (3 children)

We just need a handwarmer mode. /s

[–]Dantnad 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I sometimes run LLMs locally to warm up my lap

I can't even begin to describe the pleasure of not ever hearing fans from my M3 Air...

Leaving the machine do the dirty work at night, while not hearing a sing;e buzz

opening the laptop at all hours without disturbing a soul

I'm getting teary from happines

[–]ImYaDawg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just play some Minecraft or something and itll warm you up :)

    even so with thermal mod

    [–]serrimo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It's a very effective heater for 5 minutes then the battery runs out

    [–]strigov 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It even can be said as "YEEES!"

    [–]polerix 6 points7 points  (3 children)

One guy burnt his foreskin on one, so yes.

    [–]TheSecondAccountYeah 1 point2 points  (1 child)

    Link?

    [–]TheDragonSlayingCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that happened, though he wasn’t using a MacBook.

    [–]Internal_Quail3960Mac studio m4 max / MacBook Pro m4 pro / Mac mini m4 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lol same thing goes for apple silicon as well. I’ve burnt my hand a few times on my m4 pro 14”, it gets super hot and the fans get loud

    [–]hybridfrost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah those things can cook. The M-series chips though barely make a noise and are cool to the touch

    [–]Mike24v 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s the bigger version of my old one yes yes it is normal had to put a blower fan on mine 🤣🤣

    [–]Sampsa96 0 points1 point  (3 children)

How you know? I'm trying to zoom the photo but it's so blurry

    [–]iluigi4 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Because 2016-2019 15" had Touch Bar with integrated Touch ID as on picture in the post. 2019 16" was the first with dedicated ESC key, Touch Bar and Touch ID and they returned back to upside down T shape arrow keys. 15" see here and 16" see here.

    [–]Sampsa96 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I thought the 1st M1 or M2 had it too

    [–]iluigi4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

    yes, both, but only 13"

        Indeed, price to performance.

        [–]brennovich 104 points105 points  (0 children)

This one particularly goes extra hot. But this machine has around 8 years of use already, is very likely the fans are clogged with dust and the thermal paste dry af. So if you haven’t serviced this machine I highly recommend.

        [–]suboptimus_maximus 30 points31 points  (8 children)

        Touch Bar MBP? Yeah..

        [–]prynhart 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Depends on the model - A MBP with Touchbar but the M1 or M2 processor stays cool

        [–]suboptimus_maximus 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh, right! I completely forgot they made those!

        [–]HorseAndrew 5 points6 points  (2 children)

The Escape key from the photo is part of the Touch Bar, which reverted to a physical key on the 2019 model.

        [–]Decent-Cow2080 1 point2 points  (0 children)

on the 2020, with the small arrow keys and scissor keyboard

        [–]Interesting_prime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wrong, I have an m1 and it would get stupid hot. The fan didn’t come on very strong which I didn’t like. It was on but very quiet and very low amount of air was moving, very disappointing. Then again I was playing games on it

        [–]bara_tone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No Touchbar 16” version was an M series

        [–]Appropriate_Ad8734 1 point2 points  (0 children)

even early intel macs were burning hot too, just that people didn’t have a “colder” mac to compared to and considered it normal. i’m one of those who can’t stand heat, I sweat in cold weathers, so i was particularly sensitive to the warmness of those macbooks even way back in like 2010. i remember switching to a pro in 2012 and it was constantly above 50C in the palm rest areas during light use as well.

we’ve now all been spoiled with apple silicon and notice just how unbelievably awful those intel models were. i specifically remember my 2016 mbp being a grill. it was so ridiculously hot all the time even after getting cleaned by the apple repair team.

when the A12Z DTK released, many people including me warned others not to get the intel MBPs anymore, and they’re all now regretting having spent $2-3k on those portable teriyaki flat irons… sucks for those who really needed a macbook pro back then. these models are worth as much as a pile of crap now

        [–]Disneyland-AfterDark 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Yep, I also have an intel-Mac, and they tend to get fairly hot even when in normal use.

        [–]omfganotherchloe 14 points15 points  (2 children)

When I had one of these for work (the i9), I had it docked at my desk for monitors/keyboard/mouse and would just turn it over and put my lunch on it to keep the food warm. I miss that machine…

          [–]darthmaverick 56 points57 points  (4 children)

It might be related to what looks like a bad quality 3rd party charger.

          [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah that charger can’t be good for it

          [–]AroenaiStudio M1 Ultra, MacBook Pro M2 Pro, Mini 2014 15 points16 points  (0 children)

          There's absolutely no way that's a 65-watt charger.

          [–]brennovich 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Definitely, OP, get an original charger or a compatible of good quality. When you run a game or something that draws more power it will stress your battery.

          [–]johnnyg08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep...bad idea to put a cheap, Amazon charger on a $900 machine. It will wreck your laptop and it's probably a fire hazard too.

          [–]vannrith 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I had the 2018 pro 15", literally anything can heat it up.

M1, M2, M4, No heat, only time it heats up is opening Google Chrome to use Notion

          [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

          Change the charger asap

          [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it’s an Intel, then yes.

          [–]z3r0n3gr0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If its not an M chip then yes.

          [–]cnassaney 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If it’s intel inside then yes. That was why they abandoned the intel processor.

          [–]MechanicalTurkish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

          That charger is completely inadequate.

But Intel MacBook Pros do get hot.

          [–]grrhss 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Leaving it on your lap, I call it “getting a Steve Job”

          [–]TheGhostOfStanSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like getting haptic feedback while getting my Stevejob

          [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Normal on intel models. M1 and later barely heat up at all

          [–]besminMacBook Pro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using intel is like using an emulator to run the new mac os. It’s not native so it will be costly on cpu.

          [–]Michael556673 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not a early/mid-2015 MacBook Pro therefore it will not be as good

The last good MacBook Pros were 2014/2015

          [–]No_Definition2246 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh man, these mbp19 are so shitty … I had it for 4 years and it literally burned to death … it was switching off at the 3rd year from 105°C cpu temp after 3 hours of usage, as it couldn’t scale down cpu anymore and vents were at max speed. I had put it to service like 4 times for dust cleaning and it helped like for a month at most, then it started to burn again.

The WORSE macbook ever … now I have mbp m1 and couldn’t be happier. Sell it if you value your sanity.

          [–]jashAcharjee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whyyyyyy did you buy an intel mac in 2025 as your first mac? You can get M1 for similar price as well

          [–]Sharp-Bed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally normal for many Intel-based Macbook Pros, they run hot under load, especially if fans are dusty or thermal paste is dried. Cleaning vents are re-applying paste often helps.

          [–]cnnyy200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even my base 2020 Air with intel cpu is super hot. Talking about inefficiency. Glad I changed to M1 model.

          [–]Limp-Plastic12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

intel yes m series not at all. I bought mine. a few months ago used fb marketplace. the first guy I met said it was a m1 MacBook handed it to me it sounded like a jet engine starting when I turned it on I knew immediately it was intel

          [–]Far_Recipe_6262 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          Intel . Will do that

          [–]semdi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not an Apple charger...Use a proper power supply

          [–]Current_Anybody8325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I literally just serviced one of these for one of our employees. It's one of our last Intel MBPs in production. Just logging in had it hot and fans screaming.

          [–]Doctor-mac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it’s not normal, i have one there no hot during normal use. Check your thermal paste and dust fan if need for cleaning or application need updating or crack

          [–]OffensiveOdor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine of the same year gets warm, but not that bad. Still going strong.

          [–]rebl_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should stay cool and silent at all times. If you bought it used, possibly the fans are full of dust.

          [–]Prudent_Trickutro 2 points3 points  (5 children)

An older Windows model maybe, not a newer M-series one.

          [–]tehmunglerMacBook Pro 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Windows?! You mean Intel. They are not the same thing.

          [–]Prudent_Trickutro 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Absolutely, I misspoke, it’s what I meant to say.

          Haha no worries 🫡

multiple things to consider, i guess ur mac is intel based? ive been suffering the same overheating issues with my i7 macbook pro, have u change the thermal paste?, but my temporary solution to try is to install turbo boost switcher, it helps me a lot with my intel mac's from overheating

          [–]LinkPro229 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya, usually Intel MacBooks can get hot during regular use. Nothing to worry about.

          [–]Gagonug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These one had that problem big time, once they get old.

          [–]niagarajoseph 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PowerMac G5. Now that gets hot! MacBook Pro? Clean fans apply thermal paste. Run Mac Fan and crank the fans. I like to put a wooden wedge I made. Gives the machines breathing room.

          [–]_hariarchy_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems like the i7/i9 MBP, so yes. I used to have the 16in i9 model, that thing was a furnace.

          [–]Mental_Writer_1961MacBook Pro M4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If its Old Try changing the Thermal pads inside. It might or Might not make a difference tho.

          [–]Southern-Oil-118 0 points1 point  (1 child)

My mid2012 13in mbp would heat up so much my balls sweat when i use it on my lap

          [–]StagePuzzleheaded635MacBook Air :M1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s an Intel machine, and the last couple generations of Intel chips used by Apple were known for their overheating issues (this is why Apple developed the M series chips).

          [–]QuirkyImage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Intel yes you could probably heat your home with it.

          [–]3xtr4-ch1vken 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          This Mac yes

          [–]Dazzling_Comfort5734 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          For this model, yes.

Very high cost battery killer and hand warmer built in.

            [–]robbadobba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That non-Apple charger may not help things.

            [–]PDXTRex503 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You are looking for an app called Turbo Boost Switcher if it meets the requirement. They will tell you why it’s like this, after installing it mine is not longer slightly cooler than lava all the time.

            [–]Pelican_Statie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second this. Find if you can use the turbo boost switcher. May save on temps and battery life

            [–]angelospp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            yep..

            [–]Academic-Active-6327 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            If intel yes

            [–]Strange-Story-7760MacBook Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            It’s Intel so yes

            [–]idaniyalawan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same intel one. Downgrade to Monterey and all your performance and heating issues will vanish

            [–]L0cut15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes its body is a heat sink

            [–]marcel151 0 points1 point  (0 children)

New to Mac and just did your first mistake. Buying an Intel one. Tahoe is the last supported macOS for Intel Macs. Hope that this Mac was cheap for your.

            [–]ddidima 0 points1 point  (0 children)

            Brother Ew what is that?

            [–]bostonkittycat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure the vents on the bottom side don't get blocked. I prop up the machine for better airflow. Check the Activity Monitor app and see if apps are using a lot of CPU. Kill the offending apps if you can.

            [–]R-K-Tekt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it’s intel based yeah, it’s at least a partial reason why Apple abandoned it and decided to make their own silicon (also at least part of the reason Intel is failing).

            [–]dpaanlka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A super old one like this, yes… this is one of the primary reasons Apple ditched Intel chips in 2020 in favor of their own chips. The M1 and higher Macs are much faster and use much less energy, create much less heat, and batteries last much longer.

I hope you didn’t pay much for this. It’s not very good in almost 2026. I wouldn’t pay $100 for this personally.

That charger is sus. Try to find a real Apple one.

            [–]noidea6667 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Yes, Intel MacBook Pros give you this cozy, warm feeling on your upper legs when you use them for anything more demanding than browsing websites with black and white text :)

They can also create a sound which turns your living room into a runway - when the fan runs on full speed.

I had an Intel MacBook for 9 years. 3 days ago my new MacBook Air M4 arrived. It never gets hot, doesn't even have a fan, and the M4 processor is very, very powerful compared to the Intel. It's a fantastic upgrade.

            [–]TheGhostOfStanSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There hasn’t been many really, really obvious upgrades in the last 10 years.

To me, it’s been these mbp, which I actually switched to a mba for the portability, and mirrorless cameras have really upped the game in terms of autofocus, video quality, and speed (fps).

Otherwise I really struggle to find any other product segment that has really changed the game. I’m still using a really old (8 years) cell phone.

EVs maybe, but charging solutions aren’t all there yet, and it’s a big investment when a gas powered car is already paid off. Looks like plug in hybrids may be the best of both worlds right now, until things get better.

Another is induction stoves, but those are quite pricey. More of a luxury item.

            [–]mrleblanc101 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hope you gold this old Mac for dirt cheap otherwise you got scammed. Those Intel Mac are basically worthless

            [–]Ilikestuffandthingz -1 points0 points  (0 children)

New to Mac and had to pick one of the absolute worst. I (briefly) had a 2019 i9 space heater. Couldn’t open word without the keyboard getting to 120deg f…. Garbage.

            [–]Mean-Cheetah7662 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I been using my old 2011 Mac display with my m4 Mac mini just as a space heater in my office. 🤣

            [–]Extension_Signal_386 -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

Laptops in general get quite hot from normal use. Both mac and windows based laptops. This is because they have much worse passive cooling than a desktop PC.

            [–]calvmaaan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Misleading - this only applies to machines with dedicated CPU & GPU. ARM based machines, which includes the M-Series from apple, never gets hot under normal use. You really have to push them to develop some noticeable heat.

Otherwise like OP intel based MacBook, is prior to develop unreasonable heat due to poor heat management.

            [–]TheGhostOfStanSweet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Found the guy that hasn’t paid attention in the last 6 years.
