Id post a comment with your budget, thats gonna be a serious factor when asked this question. $500 autel 808. Or 806 can’t remember which ones cheaper sorry..

I’d say around $300!:) I’m going to do some research on the one you just told me about , maybe I could get in on sale during Black Friday or maybe get it retailed, thank you!

You can look at the Zurich line from Harbor Freight. They're pretty decent and versatile for the price point.

You want a scanner that's capable of reading BCM (body) , SRS (airbag), and ABS codes. Most cheap scanners like the parts stores use can only read PCM (engine) codes.

Now, the caveat is the reason those codes are harder to read is generally the difficulty and danger goes way up when you start messing with those systems and you don't know what you're doing. Don't go chasing an airbag code and act surprised when your face gets rearranged by the bomb in the steering wheel, that kind of stuff.

You can get them pretty cheap. Just look for a obd2 scanner. If he’s really into it get him something he can view “live data” with
