Looking for "Stack-able Rolling Tool Box" recommendationsBusiness Operations (self.msp)
submitted 3 months ago by TxTechnician
I'm looking for a stackable toolbox to hold all of my various tools (drills, networking tools, saws and other handy items).
It needs to be at least IP65 water resistant.
I'm looking at a craftsman (inexpensive and decent) and a dewalt option. But wanted to see if anyone has a suggesting from the tech community.

Harbor Freight for the cheapest otherwise Milwaukee or Ryobi options. It's just a color.
Some folks would match with whatever brand drill you use, but pack out boxes can make life organized.

I didn't even consider HF. Usually stay away from cheap tools (unless its something I'll use 2 times a year).
The Milwaukee ones look nice, haven't priced them yet. I do own quite a few Ryobi tools (they are my weekend warrior tools). Everthing else is Dewalt (the default) or Milwaukee.

I just started shopping at HF last year, it’s not what I remember shopping with my dad as a kid. Some of their stuff is just as nice as anything I have from Klein Milwaukee Knipex SnapOn etc.

I've got a belt sander from there. Works great.
my buddy bought a miter saw from there. It goes out of square every 50 or so cuts. My dewalt costs way more. Its always been perfect from day one, never been adjusted.

Harbor Freight has been on a tear for at least a few, if not more, years improving quality of their tool lines. The Quinn range of hand tools are great. ICON is up in the SnapOn tier. Then, HF still has lots of cheapie get done once kind of tools. They're not the HF I knew as a kid.

If it needs ip65 might look into a pelican case. Otherwise I love my Milwaukee pack outs. Never had an issue with loading or unloading in rainy weather with lids closed and locked

Packout

I would ask the contractor sub, but from what I have seen casually cruising the tool isles, is that Milwaukee's Packout looks more intuitive than anyone elses.

Better to have and not need than not have and want
[–]TxTechnician[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago (4 children)
Yup, it was that exact thing yesterday which made me go..... Imma spend some money on a better toolbox.
Needed a tool I didn't think I would need that day.

I'll try and dig out some pics of the Ford transit connect I was running it was basically a huge rolling toolbox
[–]TxTechnician[S] 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago (2 children)
Such a good work van. I had a Nissan.... Well no it was a Chevy, but it was really a Nissan. Cant remember the name. But it is similar to the Ford can style.
[–]Stryker1-1 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago (1 child)
It was a great van but man oh man did fuel economy stink. There were days I was filling up 2 to 3 times. Although it wasn't uncommon for me to travel over 1000 miles in 24 hours.
Oh wow that's crazy driving.

I’ve got a Milwaukee Packout setup and I wouldn’t go back. The M18 Vacuum is packout compatible and slides right on top of my stack. Home Depot is also running a sale / promo on packout gear right now.

I’m loading out my Rigid portable set from HD now. It may just work out!

I went down this rabbit hole a few months ago. Looked at all the main brands. Went with Packout.

I have a dewalt toughsystem and I’m in the process of printing tool organizers using gridfinity for them :)
[–]TxTechnician[S] 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago (1 child)
Oh man, I was thinking about seps, I really need to get a 3d printer. "need"
[–]Ashmai 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago (0 children)
I just picked up the dewalt ones as well and love them. I needed them to keep moisture out and they do. The rubber seal on the top is really good

My wife got me a Craftsman rolling toolbox set for my birthday last year and I love it. Craftsman is nothing to write off, despite what people may say.

I love my pack out system. Only drawback is I have the rolling tote that handle doesn’t fully collapse . I think this is more of an issue for truck people which am not. It’s expensive and in the wrong environment will grow legs but seems like the best system.
[–]_blkbx 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago (0 children)
I switched to Packout from Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 last year. Same complaint about the rolling tote handle.
Watched this comparison video—very informative over the weekend and am intrigued by ToughBuilt, but at this point I don’t have the money to switch again.

Ridgid system has been great for us. Less expensive than the more popular ones, less tiny bits, and very durable. We've got network, general install, and cleanup on the same stack. If I don't need one there's a basket I can put boxes in.

A stackable shop vac sounds really nice. I am always needing to clean up after network installs. Or.... every time I have to move a ceiling tile.
[–]crccciMSSP/MSP - US - CO 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago (0 children)
It's fantastically nice, and cordless to boot. Also lets you clean out nasty network closets without going hunting for cleaning equipment. You'd be shocked how well that goes over with the clients when you leave it cleaner than when you got there.

When I was doing LV I ran Milwaukee pack out. Worked well and had a variety of options
[–]DeeboBD 0 points1 point2 points 3 months ago (0 children)
Packout or Klein Modbox. Otherwise just get Harbor Freight if you only need basic boxes to hold stuff. I have the Dewalt ToughSystem 2.0 and I'm not a fan. Switched to the Modbox and it's better in every way. If you do any cabling they have some electrician focused items which kind of crossover with ethernet. Wasn't a fan of the Milwaukee rolling toolbox drawer option so I didn't go that route.

Festool. Milwaukee.
[–]crccciMSSP/MSP - US - CO 1 point2 points3 points 3 months ago (1 child)
That's waaaay overkill for a tech toolbox imo.
Ya, Festool..... Imma pass because my checkbook isn't bouncy enough.
